JD Custom Cues joint diameter

I recently bought a JD custom cue that is beautiful and plays great. I intended to have a LD 30" shaft fitted to the butt but discovered that the joint measures .891 and no one seems to make a LD shaft that large. Most are in the .840 range which leaves a .025 lip at the joint. The Lucasi Hybrid unfinished can be had at .880 which is close but after finishing it would still be small. I don't know if this is unique to my cue or if all Joel Dadivas cues come with this large joint diameter. I am posting this to try to find out what solution others have found to this issue. I don't want to get the butt turned down and refinished as it would be expensive when added to the cost of the shaft ( might approach the cost of the cue). I like the hit of this cue and may have to adjust to playing with the 29" maple shafts it came with.
I would appreciate finding out other JD owners experiences in this regard and if they found any solutions other than turning down the butt.
Thanks for your input

I tried an OB shaft on the other night and it was noticeably smaller. I have to say my JD is the best playing cue I have owned, I changed the tips to Kamui and had a new leather wrap put on along with the shaft retapered to what I like. I have had the cue for about a year and the finish is still good, when the cue gets beat up I will have it all taken down so that I can put whatever shaft I want on it, but the maple shaft I have on it now is great so no big deal to need to change.

Very interesting. I just went and took a measurement of my JD cue. It was .867" at the joint collar (on the butt). Maybe he just turns them down until they LOOK right ? I don't know what his manufacturing processes are, but this seems to be a little strange and a bit unsettling in terms of resale value. Maybe more folks will chime in.

Not concerned with resale value, I paid $350 to play with it, I cannot think of any cue out there for $350 that looks and plays as good. I would think not all custom cue makers cues are all the same specs, production cues maybe but not all customs.

discovered that the joint measures .891

Are you positive you measured correctly? .891 is an extremely large joint OD....I've never seen any cue close to that. Today most consider .860 to be too fat....I have rarely seen .870 on break cues. For most .825 to .845 is the neighborhood we live. I can't understand why .890 would be desired...but I'd be curious to learn.

I am going to have to measure mine but its certainly bigger than an OB shaft by a good deal, not sure if that has anything to do with how good it hits but I did not notice the size until I tried that shaft on the other night, the cue is actually thin butt wise which I like.

Good points! I'm not planning on ever selling mine either. I think these JD custom cues are the best-bang-for-your-buck out there. When I use mine, I feel as though I've got a much more expensive cue in my hands. Joel does very nice work, and his cues play good too (from what I know and from other peoples opinions)!!!

I bet somewhere down the road the cost of his cues will increase. I'm glad I got one early.

Its a great cue

I have no intention to sell mine either and I agree with how well they play and what a great deal they are. I have a Perry Weston that I had a Lucasi 30" slim fitted to by Pechauer as my primary player here in Portland. I bought the JD to take to Arizona to be my primary player for the 5 month winter time there and wanted the same shaft so the adjustment would be a bit smoother. I will probably just have to get used to the maple shafts it came with which I have already had turned down to 12.2 mm. I play well with them just have more confidence in long english shots with the LD shaft.

Call Seyberts.
We can match the diameter with a Predator shaft
and can probably match the ring-work as well.

Just measured my JD and it is .870 at the joint. When I ordered mine, I ordered 3 extra matching rings and had one of the rings put on a OB Classic partial. Had never really noticed it bigger than other joints. The ring worked great on the OB partial.

Where are these cues coming from? Overseas? If so then the extra large diameter may very well be an intentional design to possibly help them stay straighter with the change of climates. All things being equal, an .890 cue will have a better chance of staying true than say an .820 build.

Yeah, they are from the Phillipines.

I know Joel Dadivas cues from the past..I have sell a few JDcues here in the netherlands, they are good cues for the $$$, but I know he always makes his joint bigger than the average cues..
It looks that here on AZ alot of sellers sells his cues!! they are very populair now..
I'm still confused he's makes his cues very quick! it looks he makes 2/4 cues in a month, because some AZers have some pre-sales..
But I must say they look great!!

Maybe we stretched the measuring tape a little too much :-)
No, we're sure.

I can probably find you a partial that is close enough to that to build you an OB shaft for it.

Get some good solid measurements, and give us a call. I'm sure we can get you fixed up.

I make a LD shaft and can make it to any final diameter you want.

I make an LD shaft that I've been developing for the last seven years. I made it to have LD but still give good feel and feedback. I can make it to any joint diameter that you want and match up ring work as well

Hi We do j/ps for Many Many different cues . Joint dia. have ranged from. .760 to .870 , and some prople that have no way of measuring there joint say "just make it to billiard standard????" Sizes all over the chart . Jim

My JD is .890 as well.

Love the cue, won't sell it.

His shafts play VERY stiff, tapering from .890 to 13+mm it's easy to see why. Mine were 13.20mm and 13.19mm from Joel. Have them retapered to suit your needs and they'll play great.
