Joe Rogan Podcast on The Action Report

Your version of what happened on the show is pretty distorted, and you seem like a dick, but I'll "explain" myself anyway for anyone cool that cares. Before I did that show I hadn't hit a ball in years, at least 2, and before that I hadn't played regularly in 6 or 7. I was never very good to begin with, but I certainly used to be better than I was on that show.
The reason I said that I thought I was going to win is that the producers asked us to talk trash and say we were going to win in a friendly way to make it more interesting. That said, I actually did think as bad as I was playing that I would still win because every one else there was really, really bad.

The point is, I was completely honest about my ability, and the fact that I'm just like all of you; another person that loves the game of pool.

I can definitely relate on two of your above-referenced comments! :)

'Bout 25-plus years ago -- yeah, I'm old! :D -- I played on the Busch League which had players handicapped, depending on their innings, how many shots each game, et cetera. Well, out of 7 being the highest, I ended up being a 6. I could play me some 8-ball on the bar box, too! :D

Since that era of my life, I have become a professional railbird, I guess you could say. Within the last year or so, I went to a local pool room to sweat a 9-ball tournament, and Mike Davis, a UPA tour member, was in attendance. My boyfriend was barking at him, trying to get him to play him some, but Mike, for whatever reason, would not budge. Finally, my boyfriend asks him, "Well, how would you play HER some?," pointing at me. :(

Well, I hadn't hit a ball in literally decades. So I'm thinking I'll give up an offer he has to refuse. So I replied, "I'll take the 3 and out," thinking no human alive would give anyone that spot. Well, Mike says, "Okay. Let's go." Well, I couldn't back down after that. All eyes were watching us, and off I went to the table, borrowing my boyfriend's cue, since I don't own one anymore. The spot went from the 3 and out to the 2 and out, and $45 later, at $5 a pop, I pulled up. I gave my boyfriend a piece of my mind after we left.

Playing pool is not like riding a bike. If you don't play for years, it doesn't come back easy, at least it didn't for me. Matter of fact, I may have lost my stroke, if I ever had one, for good! :p

I still enjoy pool today, though, because I do know how to play, and to tell you the truth, I enjoy sitting back and watching the show now in the autumn of my life! :D

I just finished transcribing the tape from hell, and so now I am off to TheActionReport.com to listen to Joe Rogan's podcast and looking forward to it!

There was a short run celebrity pool show on one of the cable channels (don’t remember which) where celebs would play partners against other celebs. Well Joe Rogan was on the only one I watched. If I was to judge his speed I would say he was a 3 at best. I am not just talking about how many balls he missed, which were many, but how he held the cue, shot selection, position, etc... The best part about it was that they did prematch interviews and predictions, needless to say Joe touted that he was the best and that he could carry any partner. If I remember correctly, the only balls he made were a pocket hanger and some crazy bank that no "player" in the world would have gone for. He also missed a total pocket hanger and generally looked like a noob. And now coupled with the new information, I would guess he is a 3 speed with a large collection of pool books that likes to buy expensive sticks (I know about 100 of these guys, and I'm guessing anyone reading this does too)
i am not going to bash you superman, you took the time to sign up for a pool forum and that would lead me to beleive that you are a pool fan! and if your a true pool fan, i would think that a pool fan would welcome anybody with the spotlight on them into our sport! heck nobody knows me and you all have welcomed me and jcin into your world! and i will bet that joe plays way better than a 3! on top of that he has a pretty impressive cue collection and a wealth of knowledge about the game! that being said, i think it qualifies him for the forum! the fact that joe is famous shouldnt change your opinion of his love for the game or berate his ability. so in closing, you are entitled to your opinion! but i am willing to bet that yours is going to be in the minority! oh and JOE shouldnt have to explain himself becouse of this guy! he got what he wanted attention! thanks for taking time out of your schedule for us joe! and thank you for supporting our site and enjoy the future casts also! thats what they are for all of you!

I played against Joe a few times when he was a member of the USPPA back in the late 90's. He was a lot better than he has stated and he was a fierce competitor. He was definitely a threat to run out every time he came to an open table. If he had pursued pool like he has pursued some of his other talents
he would be an A player or better. I would say he was a B player at that time, I forgot what his ranking was but it was decent and he was a threat to beat anyone he played.

But in all fairness, he is a B-list celebrity and ANY attention that is brought to pool is much appreciated. Also, the show was on last year and perhaps he has gotten much better.
Nice first post. Somewhere there is a bridge that is missing a tenant.

Who cares what level player he is? He's a pool enthusiast, just like everyone else on here.

<-----removing foot from mouth

I owe an apology, not only to Joe Rogan, but to the other members of the forum. After re-reading my original post, I realize I came off as a superd**k, and to further shove my foot in my mouth, I hadn't even listened to the podcast. The misguided origin of my original post was that Joe Rogan was being interviewed as an expert on pool. I now know that was not the subject of the interview. The reason I chose to discredit him as an expert on the subject was the only time I had ever seen him play pool he talked trash and then played at a lower ability than he had touted. As a pool fan, this show really pi**ed me off. The last thing a pool fan wants to see on TV is trash talk followed by poor performance. The fact that pool was portrayed in this light was the source of my anger, and then to see him interviewed about pool made me say "not this guy, please tell me this guy isnt claiming to be an expert" and I lashed out at Joe Rogan. I can admit that I made a bad call. I sincerely apologize.

That was very nice of you to retract your previous opinion that was stated prematurely, I guess you could say! :p

I know an American pool player who was getting ready to be filmed for an upcoming television pool show. The producers requested that he "talk trash," as they say, because the producers thought this would boost the ratings when the show aired.

So, as he's getting ready to be interviewed with the cameras and bright lights on him, the interviewer states to him, in so many words, that a European player stated that he thought the American player's style of pool paled in comparison to the Europeans' style of pool and that the American players were not athletes like the Europeans are. Well, that really hit a nerve, I guess you could say, and the American player's response was that he thought the European players "squat to pee."

Meanwhile, the producer goes back to the European player for a second interview on camera and tells him that the American player said that the European player squats to pee, hoping to get a reaction on camera, which he did.

I guess sometimes TV producers have their own ideas of what makes for good TV. When we see the end products on TV which are edited, it is not always the full picture. Then, too, in this pool world, I have come to realize that there are two schools of thought when it comes to the popularity of pool. One is the purist point of view that goes back to the days of Willie Mosconi, players wearing suits and ties, playing pool with no conversation, and another point of view is a la Minnesota Fats barking, wanting to provide entertainment for the spectators.

It would be nice if there could be a happy medium to please all, but I don't think there ever will be! I'm still pissed off that the newly designated hot dog-eating chamipon has his own Miller Lite beer commercial, remembering when that commercial used to be Steve Mitzerak's which helped to boost pool to mainstream America. The hot dog-eating guy can stuff his beak better than others, and that's what I guess Corporate America thinks mainstream American desires to see on TV. What a joke!

Hmmm

so its not good to talk trash and follow it with a poor performance.i'll have to stop doing that.
i'm glad you listened to the podcast and squared yourself.any interest in pool is a good thing regardless.doesn't matter if you are a celeb on tv doggin balls and talkin trash.but everyone takes things differently, but its not always good to voice your oppinion on something at the time you were a little shady to.
but again thanks to joe i definately enjoyed your podcast and hope to see u at a tourny one day.

I finally got a chance to listen to this podcast. First of all, I want to compliment Justin and Chad in putting this show together. I hope it is the beginning of big things for them. Chad does a nice job of making the person being interviewed feel comfortable, and thus gets good responses from them.

Joe comes across as not only quite knowledgeable about Pool, but quite eloquent as well. He expresses his views on a variety of subjects with intelligence and clarity. I particularly liked his perspective on our sport and what he felt it needed to become more mainstream. And I must say Joe Rogan is not a "guy in a diner" when it comes to Pool. He knows the games, and its players, and has a clear understanding of what it takes to be a top player.

I liked his frequent reference to how a player stood up to pressure. His observations were right on. The best players handle the pressure the best. Period! Many observers just don't get that. There may be one to two thousand excellent pool players on this planet. So why do only a couple of dozen seem to win everything? And Joe gave you the answer.

In the pool world, we always called this "Heart". Some had it and many didn't. I know it exists because I have experienced it first hand. In the 70's I played real good Pool, but when it came to taking down the big money and beating the top players, I fell short. I didn't exactly faint, but I didn't come with it either, if you follow me.

Joe did an excellent job in his one stint in the commentators booth during the Million Dollar Challenge at Hollywood Park, and I would love to see him do more. He knows the game and he speaks well. No wonder he has been so successful at his "day job". :)

And by the way, JOE CAN PLAY! He is no pool sucker. I didn't happen to see the Celebrity Pool show he was on, but I have seen him in person. He was what I would call a lower level shortstop. Definitely not a banger. If you ever see him get down on the balls, you will know this guy is no slouch. Granted he needs practice to regain his form, but hey the guy has an excuse. He had a JOB!

Thanks again Justin and Chad.

Superman better apologize before Joe puts you in a rear naked choke............

In all seriousness, I've been a fan of Joe's comedy long before I knew he had anything to do with pool.

Joe - could you enlighten AZ'ers on the positive attributes of DMT? (A little inside Rogan-fan humor).

Honestly, who cares how ANYONE on here plays? It is all about loving the game, sharing experiences, etc. That is what AZ is all about.

Superman, I believe I found your avatar.

he apologized

it would have been funny if joe had said "YOU GOT THE EIGHT SUPERMAN".
could have been classic.he just jumped the gun a little there.

Tap, tap, tap. Nice post.

I gotta admit, when Joe started naming cues, I was like, "Hell Yeah!!! This guy gets it." :D Pretty strong collection.

I was reading his blog and just kept nodding my head going "Yup,Yup, Uh Huh, That **** is crazy, uh huh, Yup, " And laughing like an idiot. I am pretty sure his stuff is not for everyone here but if you like uncensored no B.S. observations on people and our culture you should check it out.

One thing I wanted to know was if he still has "The Sick Fish" 'Cuda from the Rides show. That car was bad ass. Really. I forgot to have Chad ask about it. So if you see this Joe, you still got it?

I just put up our newest Podcast. BigNasty interviews Joe Rogan about his interest in pool, his thoughts on the state of the game, action matches, actors and hollywood, his days as a stakehorse, his cue collection, and much more.

Joe is one cool guy. He has some great stories and surprised me with how knowledgeable he is about the game. This guy knows what he is talking about and his enthusiasm for the game is impressive.

The interview is on the main page here : www.theactionreport.com

Chad and I want to thank Joe for taking the time to do the podcast, we really appreciate his time.

Just wanted to say your site's the best thing to happen to pool on the internet in a while :)

Joe - you're one entertaining dude on ufc. Your best comment ever is when you said some guy's face looked like he got hit with an axe after a bad cut - very funny. Even though you're a great comedian, you're a better announcer yet.
