Jump Cue Pet Peeve

I really hate when my opponent in a tournament does'nt have his jump cue ready when he has to jump. First he strolls over to his case...fishes it out...takes off the joint protectors and stores them away... spends a minute or so making sure the tip is adequately chalked...and then...and then...finally shoots. Why can't people have their jump cue ready like their playing or break cue!

Sorry...just venting

It could be worse & he doesn't have one and want's to borrow yours.

Im cold busted, and willing to admit I'm just lazy. I have a cheap case, so fishing the jump cue out isnt easy sometimes. No joint protectors though, lol. And I dont use it that often, so just I leave it in there. Its not a shark move, or inconsideration. Its that breaking down 3 cues after every set is a royal pain in the ass. I prefer the old days, one cue and a small case.

The old man that taught me to shoot back in the 1960s could jump just fine with his Hoppe.

just sayin . . .

I understand what you are saying but I never get my jumper out until I need it. After that it stays out til the end of the match. I used to have a jump/breaker but went to a dedicated breaker. I can't see digging out a cue you may or may not use. In some matches, getting out the break cue could be a bit presumptuous for me.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen professional players do this very thing in tournaments. They have to know in a match with another professional that at some point they're going to have to use their jump cues. I too do not understand why they wouldn't just take the extra minute to take it out of their case before the match starts instead of the fiasco they perform trying to dig it out in the middle of a game.

Clearly I'm no pro but the problem for me is there's just no dang place to put the thing most of the time.

im also guilty of this. i can kick ok and can masse better. so i rarely need a jump cue. the type of case i use more or less wipes the chalk of the tips when stored. but once i pull it out to use, it stays out until i unscrew for the day/night...

Jumpin!

I understand the whole waiting thing most everyone has mentioned. But other than pros and really great players, most folks who jump fail in their effort. I get a little surge of energy knowing things are probably in my favor. And if I do it right ain't nobody jumping nothing! Gotta turn that negative into a positive. You hooked him and now he's in a bad spot and must resort to hard to control shot.

Why is everyone in such a hurry for someone to shoot? It seems many people complain about slow play. It's not speed pool and everyone plays at their own pace. I'm not talking about someone taking 5 minutes for every shot but what you describe doesn't seem to be slow play just careful play.

I sometimes wonder if those that complain about slow play do so because the slower player beat them.

Winner's often do not complain from what I've seen.

Jump Cues should be banned all together.
If you cant jump with your full cue then don't jump at all.
In fact ban jumping and learn how to kick.

I'm of the opinion that jump cues were invented as a way to create more things to sell to pool players, just like pocket chalkers, and most of the tip tools out there.

In my case,it's not a player that has to dig the jump cue out of their case that bugs me.

The ones that bother me,although not bad, come in 2 types.

The ones that come to the table hooked, and use the jump cue to jump over a ball when there is a foot or more between the cue ball and blocker on slow, napped, rubber backed cloth.

On this type of cloth, and given the same scenario,I'M NOT HOOKED.

The other type,is the player that comes to the table when hooked but not buried, and despite having a more conventional shot,or even a possible kick-safe that would win the game if executed well, and they resort to using the jump cue to merely make contact with the object ball.

In my experience, the 2nd type are usually the ones that luck in the most balls.

Just my observation, but both of these types are usually just using the jump cue as a crutch,to make up for lack of kicking knowledge and execution.

They also tend to be players that are constantly looking for the newest, most hyped jump cues of the time.

It's my opinion that on old school, nappy cloth esp if rubber backed, there is NO excuse to not be able to clear a full ball from a foot away with a full cue, unless you're dealing with a similar old school oversized or slug-type cue ball.

The other type that makes me scratch my head are the ones that use the jump cue a lot,but never make contact or jump the cue ball off the table constantly. Tommy D.

Well, since I only use the jump cue at play about once a month, it vacations in its place in the bag most of the time. I get it when it is needed.

pocket chalkers

One of the places i play alot of pool at the owner hangs a piece chalk from a string and a counter weight above each of the table.

He was tried of people droping chalk down into the pockets and clogging the balls inside the tables. and he would get pissed at people setting chalk on the table.

His system work fine , untill you went some other place to play pool..

the habit of reaching up for chalk that wasnt there got me a few times, strange looks like maybe i was on LSD walking around the table trying to catch little peter pan fairy's or somthing.

I made my mind up this was not going to happen again.
I bought a cheap plastic chalker and after a while the string broke.

Because I do wood working I thought I would make my own.
Then my best friend wanted one, and then his friend and so on and so forth.
I dont know how many i have made now . but the bar owner has really done me a favor because everyone hates reaching for the chalk.

After I got use to the pocket chalker I would be lost without it.
I chalk up with my right hand my bridge hand never touches the chalk .................... very important my hands sweat and I very much dis like chalk in the shaft of my cue
all of my focus is on the table not where i left the chalk.
I dont have to look for chalk knocked onto the floor.
and no one uses or runs off with my chalk .
Its great I chalk up every shot And I use my chalking to slow my game down.

My pocket chalkers are very functional . and they are the best looking of any pocket chalker in the world.

So save a fairy buy a pocket chalker:rolleyes:
I havent lost a cube of chalk in years.

I play in a weekly 9 ball league and I'm guilty of not taking my jump cue out until I need it. Once it's out I don't put it up until the end of the match. Some matches I play I don't need it and some I do. I don't try to hold up the match by not taking it out early and it's just something else to keep up with if I don't need to use it.

When I first get to the hall, I get a beverage, balls and magic rack. I head to the table. If need be, I go to the bathroom - relieve and/or wash hands in cold water. Come to table and pull out my player and J/B and chalk/burnish. I'm all set for a while!

But, this OP post references a minor violation IMO. It's the cell calls and the disappearing acts (food run, smokes, jukebox, discussions elsewhere while not paying attn to the table) that really burn time.

If I need to go do something, I'll try to go when I've left my opponent an open table :frown:, knowing he's more likely to be there longer than not.
