Kevin Varney has Passed Away

upset

Kevin made some nice hitting cues, but he sure avoided his paid in full customers.
Shane on him...........................................................................

I think he would of made good on his promise if he wouldn't of gotten sick.

To bad his health and his wife leaving him while he was fighting for his life in his last days of his life kept him from making good on his promises.

No matter what she should of been there for him..........................................

Just to let everyone know Kevin used a CA finish ( super glue ) So if some of you guys plan on ever making a cue and you plan on doing a CA finish there is a list of cue makers that have gotten sick or died from using CA as a finish.

Last regards
I was very upset with Kevin for not staying in contact with me through out his health issues.
At one time I was thinking of taking Kevin to court over his contract that he had made with me.
In the end I told Kevin that he didn't owe me the money anymore.

I didn't do this for Kevin, I did it for me, I refused to have to think about hating someone over money and loosing a friend at the same time..

Deep inside I think Kevin was good guy, he just never got the chance to finish his dreams.

Rest in peace KV.
And may dwell in the house of our LORD.

That is too bad. No wonder things went south for him so badly. This should be a wake up call for anybody who uses these harsh chemicals on an ongoing basis to keep up on all the proper safety equipment. Very sad indeed.

Last I heard he had lung infection from using super glue as finish.
RIP KV.

A reminder of the health hazards cue makers still face. Mike Cochran was 52 when he recently passed away. George Balabushka was 62, and Gus Szamboti was 56.
I know nothing about making cues, but I see a pattern here. What is so harmful? Apparently one needs breathing apparatus for the finishes and stains.

RIP Kevin

Very sad to hear , too young to go for sure. Kevin and I talked quite a few times and sent many a PM. He was a character for sure .Prayers for family

Kevin made my first custom back in 2007. And my break cue in 2008. I still use the break cue everyday and I keep the player in my case as a backup so to say. He made dynamite playing cues with nothing to look to at about them. I always supported him. I'll miss him

RIP buddy!

That sucks. I bought a JB from Kevin a long time ago. The transaction went fine, good communication...I guess I caught him on an up swing.

Regardless of his shortcomings, it's truely a shame to lose someone so young, so sad.

I wanted to mention...I bought the JB from him maybe 5-6 years ago. It's still solid and straight and does it's job well. About a year ago, I noticed something weird on the cue, the finish developed these swirls or lines...you can see them under the finish, but you can't feel them. Almost like crackleing, I've never experienced this in any of the dozens of cues I've owned before. These "finish imperfections" developed over time.

I'm not sure why I mention the above, I guess I'm naturally curious since there's been mention of him suffering from lung problems due to his finish techniques. Maybe someone can shed light as to what he might have been doing wrong, and perhaps if other cue makers can chime in, this tragedy can be avoided for any future cue builders.

RIP Kevin.

Do you know if he used a charcoal activated respirator? I was spraying a lot as a hobby (cars) - I hated those things but they are so necessary. Keeping up with the filters is expensive and a hassle. I started using one religiously after nearly keeling over from Bondo fumes.

I really don't know Tate.
I wouldn't trust charcoal respirators on layers and layers of super glue sprayed with activator.

people consume bad chemicals all the time, from smoking, eating bad foods, paint, cleaning fluids etc. they mostly dont care as it doesnt kill or harm you right away but gets you sooner or later. read the label of everything that will make it in to your body if you dont want to be like the others you read about.

RIP Peace Kevin. I'm pretty sure they have lathes in Heaven.

When Kevin messed up the first time, I gave him a blast. He let me in on a few things that were happening in his life. I said, "fair enuff ",and we became better acquainted thereafter.

I have one of his sneaky conversions that plays decent and was hoping to get a fancier player from him eventually.

Maybe I will just have to wait a little longer now.

My respirator hangs from my tool box unfortunately. CA is a killer without one. With the onset of COPD, I better get used to putting it on.

This is terrible news for someone so young to pass away. I didn't know Kevin other than reading his posts here on the forum and we exchanged PM's a couple of times.

I agree completely. There is nothing more costly than one's life.
Get the right equipment for the job and be here for the world.

Rip, Kevin. We will miss you.

And mark bear , south of 40 I do believe.

Very sad. Heartfelt best wishes to Kevin's family.

All I know is that I need to get my Varney refinished. He used a light "Satin" finish as he called it on mine... so light that it wore off where I grip the cue lol. But that could have been from extensive play over the years!!
