I was out of town all weekend and then my internet was down until yesterday afternoon.
I was playing in a tournament last night and was sitting with a few guys talking when Mark Kulungian says to me, "hey, you knew Kevin Brewer didn't you?"
I said yes, he's a friend and he then dropped this bombshell about Kev's passing. I was, and still remain, stunned.
As so many have already said, Kevin will be missed here. What an understatement!
There is a small group of guys on az with whom I interact that I consider to be like an extension of my family and Kevin was certainly one of them.
He and I talked regularly by phone and our last call will remain a very fond memory for me.
Kevin saw that I had posted recently about my having run some car dealerships earlier in my life and I got a message to call him asap and so I did.
Turned out Kevin was also in the car biz in the 1980's, same as me, and so we had that in common and we exchanged war stories for about an hour and a half much of which went way past laughing. We were actually howling (some of the stories were just so repulsive and offensive and so damned funny). A huge silver lining for Kev from the car business was that's where he said he met Dawn - that she had been a manager at a SoCal Honda store. I feel so very bad for her right now.
I learned a lot from Kevin and it wasn't just limited to cues, but man, he sure knew his Ginas, Tads, Bushkas and Szams.
Our last talk even included Kevin's take on his philosophy of life, if you can imagine. Insightful, revealing, and yes, quite humorous.
He was smart, witty, charming and exquisitely funny.
He was a marketing genius.
He regularly and with great ease turned lemons into delicious lemonade.
He was unique, to say the least.
I talked late into the night last night with Chris Tate about our friend and the lesson we are once again reminded of is to 'take nothing for granted'. Tomorrow
isn't guaranteed.
One slight possible adjustment to what Chris said is that I'm pretty sure Kevin told me that his college scholarship was for swimming though I know he was a very good golfer, as well.
I never met Kevin and only ever got to see what he looked like fairly recently when after so many years he finally changed out his himalayan cat avatar in favor of one showing off his skee-ball prowess. What a funny man!
It's remarkable that I should feel such a loss over someone I never met. Yet I do.
AZ is an amazing community.
Kevin was an amazing fellow.
You will be sorely missed, Kevin.
Rest In Peace, my friend.
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his many friends.
best,
brian kc
