Linen, leather, exotic or wrapless what do you prefer

Linen on my players. The linen wraps on my Olneys, my McDaniel, and my LP cues are the nuts.
On my break cue, I like a rough, tacky grip. Faux Teja if it's not slick; the new sport grips are good.
I'm not a heavy hand sweater, but wrapless just doesn't suit me.
To each their own is the main message.
 
Wrapless for me. But out if the wraps i have used leather thread wrap like what Abear uses is my favorite.
 
Wrapless is my first choice for sure. You just cannot beat the feel or the tackiness of a no wrap grip.

I can play with the softer open pour leather wraps. A stacked leather wrap is my favorite leather wrap, but can play with genuine bull hide no problem.

Any other wrap is too slick for me, but that's just me, we all have different hands :D

The wrap is nothing more than personal preference and aesthetics...it does not effect playability of the cue.

It absolutely can effect the playability of a cue. If your hand doesn't grip right, if it slips too easily and requires you to grip harder, you can easily introduce stroke flaws to your game that wouldn't otherwise be there.

That's why so many people like a wrapless, the finish gives better grip and it doesn't slip as easily.

That's also why some people prefer a slippery grip also. It comes down to what works best for you and your game; however, it is NOT just aesthetics.

Cork or Cortland for me. Textured leather of all types make my hand
raw after several hours at the table. Wrapless is my 3d choice.
 
I highly prefer leather but not just any kind. Elephant ear is my favorite (because is has a little "bite") but I like other leather wraps too. Cork/ rubber has a great feel but doesn't look good on all cues. Linen is okay depending on how it was finished. I don't like the feel of automotive finish so I'm not a wrapless cue fan. The feel of lacquer like on an old bar cue is okay though. As has been said wraps are pretty much a personal taste issue. In the last 6-8 years wrapless have become more popular than ever. Linen has lost a lot of ground on custom cues to leather. Martin
 
Wrapless is my favorite.

I agree with the OP in the fact that I think some leather/exotic wraps cheapen the looks of a cue.

I have only played with one Leather wrap cue in my 27 years of playing and it was on my first cue an ultra cheap K-Mart special with a screw on tip , the wrap was actually like those old steering wheel cover covers you buy at auto-zone. So I am sure this is where my personal predudice against leather wraps comes from

My personal preference is a wrapless, but I do not have anything against Irish Linen wraps

Is there a diffrence in feel and play with a leather or exotic leather wrap , looking for opinions

I prefer stack leather. It's got the performance of wrapless but not as sticky and there is a little warmth to it.

If I couldn't have stack, I would take wrapless.
 
I prefer a nice E-wrap, not to sticky and has a nice feel to it - looks ossum to:-).
A really nice "played in" linen wrap and wrapless is nice also, my guess is that we tend to chose (at least me) the wrap/less after the humidity outside and inside (hands) and what kind of stroke/grip we have.
I prefer it to have a good grip and I like it when I can move my shooting hand with ease so the E wrap is perfect for me.

"fake" or real - don´t matter for me. Looks though however and when it comes to E wrap there is only fake black from Tiger I think and I like the brown colors so...

Ps the best feel when you shoot though is wrapless, no cushion effect due to any wrap.

What i am saying is the wrap does not effect how the actual cue plays and performs. I understand that it may effect how good or bad an individual plays with it depending on their personal preferences.

I prefer pressed Irish linen as well, but have cues that are wrapless, leather, and exotic.
 
Wow, I've never experienced a bad linen wrap... I had a cheap players cue rewrapped for me once by Mike Webb, and it's incredible. I still have it, and it feels amazing.

I'm linen wrap 100%. I don't like the the leather wraps or exotics. I don't like the texture under my hand.

I hate the look of wrapless. Even with a fancy wood or something, I just can't get over how unfinished they look.
 
when i designed the original deano cues
i basically chose from all the best things i had seen and put then together



big wood pin,canonical taper,and a few minor things
i used old house stick buts to keep the cost down and .more to the point here

when itwas time to do the wrap ,i didn't like wrapless pr se,the fish on the house cues always got sticky or clammy

as a kid i used to sand the finish off inorder to hold the raw wood

at any rate on the original deano cues i applied a tung oil finish to seal the wood and at the same time to improve the feel,replace the sticky clammy feel

the cue got better and better with age

if i had to pick my favorite ,it would be that,but it isn't nice enough for a fancy cue

larry vigas does the best fishish i ever saw,and it looks good and is not clammy
but you need to ask him if you want to know how
