last night my bca team held on to finish 2nd this session. i played so-so. just cannot seem to really give my best all the time in league these days.
i got to thinking it might be that i first won in team play in 1967. i was playing at a small bar called the argoyle on paramount blvd in downey, ca. thats 43 YEARS of playing in league.
i am going to take off next session and think about retiring.

Retire from pool? I'll say to you what my wife tells me when I tell her it's time to quit. She says " and then what are you going to do?"

If you have played league for 43 years you should get a medal for most tolerant person in the world.
Why not take a session off and just go play at the poolroom that night?
Can't help but improve your game.
Best of luck whatever you decide bud.

Try One Pocket...

Try some one hole and you will never turn back to league play...

You will be so happy and have so much to look forward to and learn about...

I am sure you have the skill set to start playing the game and your skills will surely be tested...

Best thing about one pocket....the person who plays better usually always wins....not much luck in one pocket like there is in the other games...

If you play good you will win...If you play not so good, you will lose...

Luck factor very low overall...

Give it a try my friend and you will never regret it...

Definitely agree, just play with some buddies another night instead. Have fun with people you actually want to be around :p

feels like the first time . . .

Geez , Chuck , 43 years ?
You only need to stick with it a few more years til the Oldtimers Disease kicks in ~ and then every match will seem like the first one !!
Imagine the excitement as your caregiver leads you to the table . . . .

really , though , it might be time for a break - take a few months , go fishin , relax , visit some family , get a colonoscopy . . . . .

Hi Chuck... 43 years of league play must have garnered you some friends, an enemy or two on the Pool Table & some respect amoung the players that know you.

League play for me is about comraderie. I enjoy playing well & I've come to know that I have learned some good lessons playing BCA Pool;

a. never give up
b. never expect to beat a lesser player
c. never expect a better player to beat you
d. enjoy the moment of competition
e. congratulate your opponent on good play
f. try to understand what just happened, that info can help you out later
G. being a gentleman in the loser's seat will garner respect from your friends
h. when studying my opponent's play, I can actually learn from that

These are just a few reasons why I play & couldn't ever see a way to retire from this beneficial interaction with my friends & acquaintances

ugghhh..I'd rather watch paint dry then play one pocket lol

I love leagues but..it doesn't do much for your game. Playing 4 games over a period of hours doesn't do much for you. I just enjoy hanging out my friends.

I played in three years of leagues, saw how much money I was wasting, and decided to spend that money on a table.

I haven't been back to that pool hall since.

I'm very envious of you for your 43 years, Chuck. I only started leagues in 2005 after returning to pool after a long layoff, and am so grateful for the many friends I have made through this association, and how much they have helped me with so many things other than pool. Taking some time off may help you realize what a gift this has been for you. Enjoy!

I played in ONE LEAGUE, One Time, for One Night. IT WAS ACA, disorganized, screwed up, it a bar with kids, drunk, and karaoke, and after seeing the lay of the land so to speak. Plus how disorganized the league operator was I said NO THANKS!

Chuck, the best advice I can give you is take two weeks off and then quit!

Truthfully, you amaze me. I was actively plying the L.A. bar scene in the late 60's. I must have hit that bar too at one time or another. There was lots of action back then (for small $$). And some really good players (Peter Gunn, Bakersfield Bobby, Jim Williams, the Mexican contingent - Sergio, Mario, Little Al, Pepe, Al Nicaraugua, Lumphead, Joe Salazar and others). I did my best to avoid the good players and did just fine for a long time. Back then, there must have been well over a thousand bars around L.A. that you could get money games in. So that was a lot of territory for maybe 40-50 hustlers to operate in, although I often saw the same guys wherever there was good action.

I played pool for well over thirty years before ever joining a league in the mid 90's. It was a BCA league. I found it to be fun and very competitive. I was usually on pretty good teams and we always cashed decently (but never real high) at the Nationals in Vegas. Our Captain was our weak link, and one weak player made your team susceptible, if you know what I mean. I finished as high as second overall in the very competitive West Side league, one year winning something like 92 out of 100 games. I was going 5-0 almost every week. 4-1 was a bad week.

I never made much money in league play, but it was fun for several years until our team organizer, Richard Mikesell, passed away a few years ago. I quit after that.

i will never quit pool

i just need a break from the league and i am just tired of playing on crappy bar tables. the bar owners are so busy selling booze that they don't have time for the table up keep. or they just don't care.
at one time there were a lot of 10-20 dollar tournaments in this area but most have folded. only one pool hall and its 40 miles from my home.
i have a table at home and a few buddies that come over for that one pocket game. but most are bar box players.
jay, when i was in la area, you could walk in any bar that had a table and find a game for a beer. most of the time before the bar closed [ 2:00 when i was there ] it would almost always get to be a $2 -$5 dollar game. not a lot of money, but better than nothing.
i'm going to just spend a little less time playing and a little more building cues. also am going to play in the super seniors bca may, in vegas. i will have a few cues for sale. so if you see a guy wearing a chuck starkey shirt, please introduce yourself.
