Manny Pacquiao Open at Hard Times

Thanks Jay.
Manny has been here for a week though.
He arrived two Saturdays ago.
Good going Gomez!

Correct - just watch on HBO 24/7 Pac vs Cotto

I didn't see two weeks before his fight, Pacman taking time out to go to a pool tournament.

does anyone know the winners beyond third place?

I was wondering if anyone had the brackets or knew who took what place beyond third?

Jaden

How does that work?

10K total purse as advertised. 1st - $3,000, 2nd - $1,500, 3rd - $1,000, 4th - $700, 5-6th - $500, 7-8th - $400, 9-12th - $300, 13-16th - $200.
Manny never made it there, possibly because planes were grounded in Manila yesterday. A spokesman for him said he sent his regrets and thanked everyone (players and fans) for coming.

Payout =10K as advertised. So the payout is funded in the main from player entries? Approx 69 players x $100=$6900 in entries. The remaining $3100 coming from the promoter? Any TD or PPV costs/staffing fees also paid by promoter?

So the issues that led to 'boycott' were that the payouts were late? in being posted? that initially-late posted payouts were based on player entry money only? that promoter was not on site to address discrepancy?

Is this unusual?-that promoter not be around at late stages of tournament(final 16)? - or that his money not be available on site to fund entry shortfall/seems entry Money is known B4 tournament starts.

I have no clue how this works-but as an observer-it must have been sufficiently odd for the uproar to have taken place. Morro can be an animated guy-here I tend to agree with his beef.

Jay- were you around when this drama was unfolding? At first I thot Oscar was barking at Morro-about -who knows what?/being loud while Oscar and Louis were starting their match. Apparently Morro was organizing a player boycott.

So this was not $10K added-but 10K total purse.

Jay-do we place blame on somebody here? If so -who? Can I guess that the promoter role was delegated by Manny to someone else and the hubub that occurred was enough to keep Manny from showing up? Did Manny's people screw up?
Does this stuff happen a lot? Or is this not unusual?/just happened to be on the internet live?

Kudos/kudoos to "Big'un" with TAR for his initiative and appreciated inquiries on the floor at HT attempting to provide some clarity to a strange situation.

The drama was worth $15. I hope that TAR doesn't end up being the primary charitable contributor here. Tar's refund offer was reflective of what appears to be a class operation-I know I got my moneys worth-hell it was almost Jerry Springer-esque.

Got ta love it -now that's pool-players getting 'played'/'post before we play anymore'/give back the entries-we'll have a ring game!!Best $15 I ever donated. And I didn't have to sweat being towed from the Jack-in-the Box parking lot.

just my tax deductible? $.02

I was not in any way involved in the production or direction of this event. I came in expressly to help TAR on the internet broadcast. I only saw the drama unfold just like you did. From what I understand the prize money pay outs had yet to be posted on Sunday and players were beginning to get concerned.

Morro Paez instigated all the remaining players to stop play, until they found out what they were playing for. At first it was listed as a $6,900 purse by the promoters of the event. This led to some acrimonious discussions by the very unhappy players, who had been promised (GUARANTEED) a $10,000 purse. It could have been embarrassing for Manny as well, having his name attached to an event that failed to live up to its billing.

Finally the promoters (unknown to me) relented and upped the pay outs to the previously advertised 10K.

Yes it was worth the price of admission - only because they got it worked out and the tournament continued. It would have been a bummer had it not gotten resolved and the players bailed. Can't say I'd blame them, just that it would have been a drag ending to a really good event.

I was there and there was never really any announcements about what exactly was happening. I don't know who it was that ultimately came up with the cash but I'm happy for the players that it worked out OK. Bummer this would even have to come up.

So could someone explain exactly what "guaranteed" money means?

Here is what happened:

They posted the initial payouts. The total payout was $5700. People started grumbling and the TD Sam told the promoters that wasn't going to work.

Promoters come back with $6900 payout which is basically entry fees. This is when Morro and the others stopped play. It said guaranteed $10,000 prize fund on all the promotional materials. Nothing about a full field just that the 10 dimes was guaranteed.

The players went upstairs and had a meeting with the promoters and the room owner. They came back down and the prize fund was $10,000 as advertised.

I talked to Eddie the room owner late last night and found out that even though he was only the host and had nothing to do with actually promoting the tournament he went in his pocket for $1500 to help bring the prize fund to the amount that someone else guaranteed so no one could walk away from Hard Times saying they got stiffed.

The promoters are nice people who mean well but lack any experience in this sort of thing. This was also a last minute thing basically and all of those factors showed in the end.

Bottom line is they paid what was expected and Hard Times owner just shot to the top of my credibility list.

One thing that continues to amaze me is the level of support for pro pool in L.A. The place was packed wall to wall both days. Thanks to everyone in L.A. who comes out and supports these events. It has TAR excited to do some more and bigger things in the L.A. area.

Eddie and Elias (Manager) have certainly been accommodating!!!

That was real cool of him!

Here's a pic Eddie shaking Max Eberle's hand as the Champion of the 2008 Battle of Los Angeles - the first of many fine events under Eddie's proprietorship!
