Mike Erwin

I just read here that Mike Erwin has passed away. He was one of my best friends and a great Cue maker that I really looked up to. He would do anything to help a person out. He also invited me to stay at his home when ever I was in the area. I last talked to Mike about1 1/2 weeks ago, and tried to stay in contact as much as possible. I always said that Mike and Scott made cues better then the Meucci Oringinals, where he ran the Meucci Factory when they were running full blast and putting out good cues at the time. Mike has been building cues for almost a total of 40 years, and I would send him work from time to time and he always did a top notch job and always treated me like family. This just makes me feel so sad, I knew he was dealing with some of the problems I am dealing with Healthwise....Mike will be greatly missed by his great family and all the good friends he had made all of these years.....This is a sad day for me to hear this.....Thanks for posting this, because I didn't even know he was in the Hospital.

Im so sorry to hear of Mikes passing,my son thought the world of him.
R.I.P. Mike and my heartfelt condolences to the Erwin family.

I received a phone call from Mike Erwins son, Scott Erwin, who informed me that this afternoon, the great Mike Erwin had passed away this afternoon.
I have lost a friend, who happened to make pool cues. All Mr. Erwin asked was for people to enjoy his product and to live hassle free. I just wished I had known Mr. Erwin longer than just a couple of years as we talked a handful of times each week and maybe a Saturday morning. I will forever miss our conversations and hearing that glorious voice and sense of humor.
Mike’s son Scott is a truthful bliss of talent with cues as he has worked with Mike for many years. It’s going to be a rough period to start for Scott, but I have the utmost faith that Scott will continue the craft that his father has taught him. My prayers are with Scott, his family and his sisters.

Not sure, but, I know Mike has a paypal account and if a donation is something you want to make to help the Erwin Family at this time, their paypal account is:

Erwincue@erwincues.com

I’ll miss you much my friend

This thread has caught me by surprise. I'm not much if a writer but I need to take a minute to talk about Mike Erwin. My friend.

I wasn't fortunate enough to be Mikes friend for a long time as I've only known him for around a year and a half. The time I did get to know Mike will forever be etched in my mind and never forgotten. Mike was a great man, and I am proud to have called him my friend. From hour long telephone conversations just shooting the shit to Mike calling to wish myself and my family a Merry Christmas, I will forever miss my caller ID showing the name "Mike Erwin". Our conversations ranged from cues to women, farming to the weather, Meucci's heyday to the troubled economy, religion to politics, and everything inbetween. I had a friend in Mike that was important to me. I know Mike had an old school mentality and reminded me of my grandfather. Tough as nails but the heart of a kitten.

I've known for the last few months that Mikes been having some health problems but never expected him to pass. I only wish I would've gotten one more good bullshitting session in with him. Hopefully Mikes name will live on through his son in the cue world. I know that's what Mike would've wanted.

Scott and family- If by chance you read this my deepest condolences go out to you. Your father is a man who lived his life his way, hard and honest. I will forever be grateful that I got to know him for a short time. I will be in touch soon.

Ray

Very sad news indeed!

My prayers go out to his family.

Ironically, I just mailed a cue out to him today for a re-wrap, and new shaft. I spoke to him a couples of weeks ago on the phone, and had no idea that he was even ill.

These types of things really put things in perspective.

My most sincere condolences go out to Mr. Erwin's family and friends.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mike Erwin in person but did have a short relationship with him by telephone that began with my needing some replacement shafts made. His work was superlative. His personality - even better.

He had a terrific sense of humor and was a real country gentleman who, no doubt, will be sorely missed.

RIP, Sir.

best,
brian kc

Here is a little note from Mike taken from his website. For those who may not know Mike Erwin, here's a little history of his pool journey:

I am Mike Erwin, maker and owner of Erwin Cues and Master Cue & Repair. I began to learn my trade in the 1970's in Memphis, TN as foreman of one of the most popular cue maker s in the industry. I decided to leave them in Sept. of 89 and started my own cue repair business Master Cue & Repair along with my son, Scott, who has been with the company since he was thirteen. Together we have 43 yrs. of experience in the industry. We finally had an opportunity to expand our craft in the early 90's and began making cues of our own.

Our cues are known as Erwin and can be called so with pride. The cues are handled only by my son and I(occasionally my daughters). Each cue is built to last, made only of the finest woods and inlay materials. We use woods such as Cocobolo, Birdseye maple, Gabon & Macassar ebony, Brazilian rosewood, Bocote, Ziricote, Snakewood, etc. and burls of Thuya, Amboyna, and Chechen. As well as materials like the beautiful Mother-of-pearl, Abalone, Ivory, etc. Coming soon we ll also have Pau, Tigereye, Agate, Jade, etc. (All these and many more will be listed on the custom cue page which will be up and running shortly.) All cues are made by hand and lathe NO CNC. Each cue is crafted with care and are known as one of the most color coordinated cues in the industry.

All this to make a satisfied customer because with the exceptional quality of our cue and our personal customer service, our customer always becomes a friend, just ask anyone who owns an Erwin.

My heart goes out to his family and friends. RIP, Mike Erwin.

To Mike’s family, my heart is with you along with my prayers.
Many times when Mike was trying to get a hold of my husband, he would call the house here and I’ll miss his Southern kind voice which would always lead to him singing parts of a song to me as he said he needed to practice for Friday Night’s. He was a favorite at their local karaoke clubs and I’ll miss his short practice sessions. Mike would ask me for my favorite song of the day and go right on into singing it for me. We laughed a lot because I would tell him to sing anything from the Monkey’s tunes and actually got him to do a couple of lines of “ Day Dream Believer ” and it’s hard today as I will not be able to share these little moments again, but, am so happy I did have them. I would like the world to know, to me, Mike Erwin will always be my vision of what - a Southern Gentleman is . We never had the chance to meet Mike face to face, but over the last several years, Mike was a part of our weekly life. When a package would come in with cues in it from Mike & Scott, we would open them up like Christmas presents as most of the time we never knew what was sent and of course Chuck would call Mike and get all the details about the exotic woods as we all would laugh on the speaker phone as no one knew how to spell the exotic woods he put in the cues let alone how to pronounce some of them. “Pieces of furniture” is how Chuck would describe some of them as they stood out like Mike himself did to the people who were lucky enough to actually share time with him. Our lives were certainly enriched when Mike entered and although we are saddened today, we know his spirit of life will always be a part of us going forward.
