My Lesson with Earl ? 7/23/07
Let me start the day relating the hustle and bustle of getting to Mike Gulyassy?s house , trying to use the Map Quest directions, which didn?t seem to be so direct. We found our way eventually and ended up passing Mike?s house. While we were turning around, Mike called to see if we were finding our way okay and if we needed any help getting there ? assuring that we would find our way. We didn?t end up having time to eat, and it was probably just as well, as I was very, very nervous. The only thing that was going through my mind was that I wanted to play decently in front of this World Champion. My mind was racing with things I wanted to ask him, as my wife was going over the notes that I had jotted down. Earl greeted us as we arrived, and we started unloading my cues and our camera gear. I am so glad that Earl and Mike agreed to let me video the lesson ? it is something I?ll treasure always, and having the footage to review and use for practice is invaluable! The ?staging area? for the video camera was perfect ? it was a true ?pit?, where the camera was set at the top of a landing, looking down over the beautiful, old-school Gold Crown table with Electric Blue Simonis cloth. This ultimate table was complete with Aramith balls, the ?measles? cue ball, and I can?t even begin to describe the perfect rails and how incredibly well they played. Mike offered us water and soda from the compact refrigerator and showed us where the bathroom was, making us feel completely at home. While my wife set up the camera, Earl invited me to loosen up by hitting a few balls. My friend, Matt, from Atlanta (my pool and AZ Billiard forum buddy) arrived, as Earl and Mike were very accommodating in agreeing for Matt to have a 2 hour lesson with Earl after my 4 hours. For the next 4 hours, I was entranced by Earl ?The Pearl? and all his knowledge and expertise. He showed me some of his world class shots, explaining the physics, spin, deflection, alignment, patterns and strategy behind them. We went over his use of the Diamond System and the patented ?Earl Strickland break?. With his 30 years of experience, and the thousands and thousands of hours of practice that he has had, Earl had much to share on technique, strategy and the politics of pool today and how they differ from the past. The chemistry between Earl and Mike is magic, their relationship and partnership such a great thing. The OB/1 shaft that they have created together after hours and hours of experimentation, change and creation ? Mike through his equipment expertise and true talent for cue making, and Earl with his knowledge and passion for the game - have truly come up with a work of art in this new shaft. It will change your pool playing life!! Earl invited and encouraged me to shoot with his OB/1 (no taper), and by the end of the day, I went with Mike to his shop to order an OB/1 shaft of my own. (Imagine, I am willing to toss aside my Predator 314z to play with this new shaft!!) I really enjoyed having Mike show me around his shop and ?finish room?, where I was able to see some truly beautiful shafts and butts ? really beautiful creations!! This is my opinion, based on what I was able to experience and see; Earl is truly passionate about and in love with the game of pool, and Mike?s craftsmanship speaks for itself. Mike is a quality player in his own right and gives lessons himself! I had no intentions of buying a new shaft when I set up this lesson, but the OB/1 is really a jam-up piece of equipment! I can?t begin to enumerate the tips, techniques and things that Earl showed me today. I was able to learn first-hand the benefit of his wearing a weight when he breaks and the benefit of the use of gloves. Earl was relaxed, kind, funny, patient and an excellent, excellent teacher. People talk about Larry Nevel?s stroke, Mike Massey?s stroke ? and the list goes on ? but to truly understand Earl?s passion and to see it first hand?Earl?s stroke is deadly, precise and beautiful to see, as only Earl can execute it. I love this game so much, but to see Earl play it the way it is supposed to be played is indescribable.

I could go on and on about what a great day this was for me?probably one of the best ever (other than the day I got married)! I would encourage anyone serious about improving their game ? from basic to advanced stages: Earl can cover it all ? to contact Mike about doing a lesson with Earl. I enjoyed his instruction immensely and learned so much! But more than that, I enjoyed my time ?hanging out? with Earl. We had a great time looking through some OLD photographs I had brought with me of the ?early days? of pool, and he signed one for me. And after the lesson was over, Earl even took me to a local sports store to help me purchase a glove of my own!! Stay tuned ? when I figure out how to download a clip from the lesson, I will share one with you on YouTube. My stance and form, corrected to Earl?s standards (which I had learned as a kid by emulating Mike Sigel) have my hamstrings screaming (I?m a big guy ? about 6?4?), but it is all more than worthwhile having spent such a great and memorable day with a true gentleman and the Master ? Earl ?The Pearl? Strickland.

Wow, this is a novella. I waded through it though, and it sounds like you got your money's worth and more. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I think you make it clear that in a non competitive environment Earl is a pleasant person to be around. With a wealth of knowledge to share.

As an aside Tang and I talked about Earl briefly today. He pointed out the obvious, as he always does. He said Earl's behavior began to deteriorate when he began to have trouble winning. He was no longer the dominant player that he'd been for so long. Being highly competitive, this may have a lot to do with him getting unnerved so easily. Kind of reminds me of what happened to Mosconi as he aged.

This is not meant to be a flame on Earl, just an honest attempt to understand the demons that torment him. I'm glad that he can still be beneficial to aspiring players like Fast Davie, and make a good impression on them. Maybe he has found his new calling in Pool. I hope so for his sake. And I commend Mike Gulyassy for providing this opportunity for Earl.

Thanks for sharing your lessons experience with us. It sounds as if you had a great time as well as an opportunity to enhance your game.

I do look forward to seeing that video clip when you can figure out how to load it. If you go to YouTube.com, there may be an instructional guide that will help you step by step.

I hope that several months from now, you post back to this thread or maybe a new one to let us know if these lessons helped your game any. :)

Jay, well stated. I also found Mr. Mosconi's attitude less than great in his later years....SPF=randyg

Who created the OB1 shaft??????randyg

If you have followed this topic at ALL during the last couple of weeks, you would know these things, as they have been mentioned many times.
 The OP mentioned before and after (even in the first post of this thread: "My friend, Matt, from Atlanta (my pool and AZ Billiard forum buddy) arrived, as Earl and Mike were very accommodating in agreeing for Matt to have a 2 hour lesson with Earl after my 4 hours. For the next 4 hours, I was entranced by Earl ?The Pearl? and all his knowledge and expertise"), that he was taking a 4-hr lesson. Earl charges $75/hr...a bargain imo.

I overlooked it. I cant see how I did that in the massive wall of text. Go figure. You could've just answered the question in the end of your post without all the 'foreplay', but I see you're just that classy.

Wow! Good for you Davie! I am quite jealous! Though I have flamed Earl for his tournament antics, he is a guy that has paid his dues and whatever he lacked in talent, he made-up for in passion for the game.

I think that Jay is correct in stating that Earl is frustrated because he is not winning as much anymore. Part of the gratification of competition is that you see the magic that your hands and brain can create off the tip of your cue. Earl knows that he has struggled and paid his dues and he knows the magic that he can create on the table, so to not be able to show it to the spectators must be frustrating beyond imagination.

After my next son is born, I may be moving to Atlanta or Greenville and I will certainly take a lesson based soley on your recommendation. Thanks for the great descriptive narration!

Oh.... just one question.... did you start shooting better or are you in the post-lesson slump where you are still putting the pieces together?

That was HARD to read! I see why paragraphs were invented.

The OB-1 shsaft was invented by Mike? I'm confused about that statement.

But wait! I just re-read that part about the creation of the shaft and I think he means that Earl and Mike have created a reconfigured OB-1 for designed especially to Earl's specifications.

But what about the "no taper" comment? No taper? Now I am confused.

cubc...Sorry you got your feathers ruffled, and of course you're correct. However this was discussed ad nausem in the 10 page thread about Earl giving lessons over the past couple of weeks. As a regular reader and poster it's just hard to understand how you might miss this. I agree that the post was a little hard to read...however the content was there.

Fast Davie,
It sounds like you had a really good time and learned some things in the process. The OB-1 shaft has no taper OR a STRAIGHT taper if you will depending on how you perceive a taper. It is either cone shaped or straight and I know what you mean with the no taper because I received my OB1 shaft from Mike Gullyassy. The taper and tip are something that Mike and Earl have worked on together to obtain what Earl feels is the best combination. I don't know if anything else was changed on the shafts except OB1 does not make a collared shaft for Mike Gullyassy's "pin" so Mike makes & threads his own collars to fit his cues. So I guess you could say he is modifying the OB-1 BLANK shafts to fit his and Earl's requirements.

It also sounds like Earl enjoys teaching and I look forward to taking some lessons with him as well.

We look forward to seeing some of YOUR youtube video of your lesson with Earl and as you get a chance to digest some of your lesson, please feel free to share what you think is appropriate.

Thanks,
JoeyA

Sounds like you had a great time and learned a lot. That's just how it should be! What a great experience! Looking forward to seeing your utube video soon. :p

(p.s. my wife offered to get me lessons with Earl for my upcoming birthday, but I'm in Albuquerque, NM, and figured that it wouldn't be worth the travel and hotel expenses unless it was 2 or 3 days lessons....still mulling it over!!)

Great post, sounds like it was well worth your money....good luck moving forward, hope you can post a progress update in a month or so....

Lessons with Earl

Thanks for taking the time to post your experience with one of the best players to ever play 9 ball. If you ever get a chance to see the video of Earl vs Efren in Hong Kong (race to 120 for $100,000) do it because it's the best 9 ball i've ever seen played!

Keep us posted on how the lessons helped your pool game and when you get the video posted on youtube.com.

I take that to mean Earl's standard shaft configuration, where the "pro taper" goes almost the entire length of the shaft. So the only taper would be just a few inches from the joint.
