My U.S. Open

Yes, Jay, you work your butt off and shouldn't have to tolerate any verbal abuse. I'm sure you're not getting rich from this! I didn't go this year, but was there last year and everything seemed to go very smoothly.

1 Question

Did the tournament crew get paid? I know inquiring minds want to know. The Drama is one of the reasons I didn't do coverage this year.

We got checks. We'll see what happens when they hit the bank.

Thanks Jay for always keeping the felt nation informed and for keeping it real as to "how you see it". Perhaps there will be some new jockeys in place for next year and it will be a different horse race. If so, I hope they have enough sense to contact you, and those you mentioned, for advice way beforehand!

Well, I don't really know much about B.B. but all I've really ever seen from him over the last few years are long wind-ed statements and rationalizations to compensate for a general display of bad management of time and resources.

The U.S. Open SHOULD be a prestigious event which everyone would be proud to say that they were a part of, but I've heard so many complaints to the contrary by others... I'm really sorry that it's this way.

Thanks for your efforts, Jay and to all of those who were sober enough to put their heart into it

Interesting read, a wee bit cryptic, I guess, in an effort to conceal truths.

Barry Behrman the one who was drinking alcohol?

A yes or no answer will suffice.

I think you can read between the lines Jenny. :-)

Oh and my paypal is paypal@jbideas.com for that Bennie please! I want to take Karen out to dinner and say, "you didn't cook that".

You were in my thoughts this morning. I cannot tell a lie. Congratulations!

I hope I can use PayPal okay. I don't use it very often, if at all, but I will try to for sure. I may never see you again in person, but I hope that's not the case.

That was easier than I thought on PayPal. Let me know if you get, John. I haven't used PayPal in years. :)

You sure do know how to pick 'em.

Yeah, it seems like jay is trying to tread a line on this one even though he usually names names. I'll just say if it's NOT barry berman... well, everyone is assuming it IS. Which would be really unfortunate if that isn't who Jay's talking about :P

U.S.Open seating &

...did you crawl into anyone I know ?

Keep it coming Jay! On day 2, before I got my VIP pass, and I got over being disappointed, I learned a trick on that squished seating. I was wanting to get to a real good seat at times and asked myself "how bad do you want it?" Self replied "real bad". Sooo... I crawled under the tables. :) I got some funny looks, but WTH? I was ringside at The Open baby!

U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship entry fee money.

Jay,

It sounds like the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship took a slide this year.

That's really sad.

I am out of the loop on the money business and while I scanned a thread a few days ago which suggested that the players who were not paid, would be paid in the next few weeks, I was just wondering about the entry fee money. Was the BCA collecting the entry fee money? If so, did they have any responsibility of paying the money to the players? Of did they simply just give the money to Barry Behrman after collecting it?

Does anyone have a link (or know) to how the entry fee money is managed?

A certain player that we know Jay from San Diego that did a lot of work on the losers side beating Mika, Mark Gray and a lot of tough players was told his check would be coming in the mail"-)

Just a Thought

Maybe this is another event that would benefit from different management. It will be too bad if this event joins others that are no longer with us like the Glass City Open, the pro event, in Toledo, OH. Maybe Diamond needs to become more involved. I have been to the DCC the last 3 years in a row and flew to Tunica this past summer for the Southern Classic. From a spectator's viewpoint these tournaments seem to be really well run and fun to watch. I really enjoy them.

In retrospect, Barry should have moved the event to another city with a civic center. The seating was absolutely horrible. He said he has something in the works that will be much better next year, but with all the money problems he had I am very suspect.

This was my first time attending a US Open. I'll add a few thoughts. I was there Monday and Tuesday and brought a friend with me who has little pool experience.

I can confirm that it was difficult to get past anyone already seated, so interiror seats remained empty while some people just stood around the entrance doors. My buddy and I would usually go several seats in to leave some room for others that might show up later. A couple of times I asked my friend if we should move down a couple more seats, to make it easier for some late comers to get a seat and he said they can squeeze around if they really want to but if we move all the way in we'll never be able to get out. There were some who walked across the front and then under the tables but that was a bit disruptive to the players.

The plus side of the seating arrangement is that we always got to sit right in front of the tables. Very easy to see the action and generally good quality play too. On Monday in the six table room there were mostly top level players in this one time slot we were watching, and even my non-pool-playing friend noticed the sweet sound of balls dropping continuously. He said that's what pool should sound like. I myself had never heard anything like it. All six tables had good players shooting in a steady rythym, all offense and everything was dropping. The rythmic clack-drop, clack-drop, clack-drop sound was a sound to remember. The sight and sound combination is a great memory.

I haven't yet seen anyone mention the worst thing about the seating. The back row of seats on one side of the non-TV four table room had about a 10 inch gap between the platform and the wall. Given that it was kind of dark back there and there was almost no room behind the chairs I'm very surprised if no one was injured. One guy did stumble into the hole with one leg and caught himself between a chair and the wall. Fortunately, he seemed ok. Someone came later to take a look at it, so maybe they fixed it later somehow. Don't know how they could fix it though because there was a support column sticking out in the middle that would prevent moving the whole seating structure all the way back.

Anyway, I thought it was great experience and Jay and the rest did a great job as usual.

I enjoyed watching again this year as always. Some very high level pool was played. My only issue was the stream kept freezing up every couple of minutes which is a pain to constantly refresh.

Seems like BB needs some rehab and some business management course work.
