Once and for all!

I am addressing this because I can longer sit idly by and watch Grady get torn to shreds. It is clear that his repitition is what has irked many of you, but for one minute, put yourself in his shoes. Here is a man who has devoted his entire life to not only playing pool, but advancing it as well. Yes it was his choice to play for a living, but the promotion comes from his PURE love of the game.

There is no question in my mind that the overwhelming feelings of disappointment are well deserved. Similarly, the only avenue of addressing those feelings is through us all on these boards. It is a terrible shame on all of us, as he said, for it to come to this.

2 years ago, at the inception of the revitalization of the world straight pool championships, Grady called me in my home room. I had only met him once before, and found it strange that he would call around to track me down. He asked me during that call if he could get an invite. I promised I would try, and I did. I tried multiple times, and was refused each and every time. For my efforts, I endured insults and backhanded snipes from he and other members of the board.

This year was no different, as I do believe that Grady should have been invited. There is so much misinformation on these boards that it amazes me. Everyone chimes in, "why wasnt so and so (insert past champions name) invited. I dont see their name..." trust me, they all were invited, but the ones who didnt play, declined. So again, this year, I insisted Grady be invited. My inquiry was met with harsher words this year, and so I dropped it. Lo and behold, I was attacked again on these boards.

Now, I dont believe that Grady has a right to know these things. Just like he had no right to know what I pm'd jay helfert about. But since its out there already.. Jay pm'd me about the proposed 1 pocket world championship. He asked among other things, if I would invite grady. My response was that it was way to early to decide, but the fact remained, I was torn. On the one hand, I believe he truly belongs in such an event. On the other hand, I have endured many unwarrented slams and insults from him. I can never lose respect for the legendary player that he is, but as a person, thts a different story.

For the rest of the kool aid crowd, it was interesting to see so many of you jump to the conclusion that I would not be inviting him, after I disclosed that I was in no way responsible for the invitations to the 14.1 event. Yes, I "hand" delivered some invites, but the decision wasnt mine. Incidentally, whenI first brought up the 1 pocket WC, i intentionally included that if this was to come to pass, I would be more hands on, thus more ivolved in the ENTIRE process.

What I find most disturbing though, is that these threads cause nothing but division amongst us. Initially it was amusing, but it has deteriorated into something that I feel will carry on between posters in many different threads for a very long time.

I'll say one more thing, about JAM. After this post, I must put you on ignore, as a lifetime punishment for your newly discovered hypocrisy and agenda. America first, my ass. I read your comments, which I am sure you regret ever writing, about the roster for the 14.1 event. After reading the list you wrote that it was "yankee infested". Do I need to define the word infested to you? these are your fellow americans you are writing about. So I have now come to see that you don't care about foreign players, OR american players. What you are interested in are the players that you and keith are frinds with. You proved this with your own hands. SHAME ON YOU!!! (btw, ALL of the sponsor wild card spots went to NYers)

I will finish by saying that, even after all that has been said (ie, "insinctually I don't like him"), I will continue to have an open mind and turn the other cheek. I hope all of you will cease immediately from posting anything negative about Grady, now and in the future. And all of you that love and revere him, shower him with the respect he clearly deserves.

Thanks Randy for having the backbone and gumption to write this post. You have my respect and admiration. Hopefully, Grady will read this and finally get the message. As for Jam, I like her as well, but she seems to have lost her bearings somewhere along the way.

Randy,
When I first read this post here, I actually (NOT a figure of speech, really did) got sick in the stomach. Because of what you just posted, I feel like you may have gotten a raw deal on these threads. Let me explain.

If what you said is true, and I do believe you, by the way, then if you did campaign that hard for Grady, then you really did not deserve all the "negative press" you received in the multiple threads that addressed this subject. I feel like you got thrown under the bus somewhat. I felt very bad for you to have to have gone thru all that. We kid a lot here, but most of us can tell what's over the line or not. The feeling I got was almost the same as if someone found out that a guy spend x amount of time in prison for a crime he didn't commit. That's why I felt so sick over this.

Then I pondered all of this before I posted this response. Why wasn't this position of yours made clear (or at least clearer, since apparently so many failed to know about this) earlier? Why didn't you explain all of this to ward off some of the negative thoughts? I for one have made it very clear in the responses I've posted on this matter that I am a very, very big supporter of Grady. That doen't mean I always think he's right, but nonetheless, I have tons of loyalty to the man. And I made equally clear that I have much respect for what you've done for our great sport. You also seemed very much to express yourself as if you WERE calling the shots on the things you were kind enough to sponsor. I think that, plus the already stated fact that many "fans" here were not aware of the behind the scenes machinations that were going on may have been at least part of the problem.

And lastly, the post you started this thread with was very well written as far as it expressing your thoughts and feelings about this. Major props to you for the gracious spirit in which you held back from slamming Grady.
I am a little confused, however, about your inferences to "kool-aid crowd".
The impression from that phrase and some others in that post give the hint that you sort of look down on "fans" having an opinion or say. I may be wrong on this, and if I mis-interpretted your remarks, I do apologize. But really, where would any of these call them whatever you will tournaments be without "fans"? I don't have any extra money at all, but I have an excellent credit rating and score. I don't have the money to sponsor pool tournaments, so instead, I invest time playing it and studying its rich history. That makes me a fan with opinions, which, like you, sometimes express these opinions on these forums.

Randy, I really do wish you well and am not against you in any way. If you're as interested in pool as you seem, I would think you'de be very interested in what the fans and followers of pool have to say. If so many of the natives are so restless, there's got to be a good reason. Maybe the onus of their ire should be directed to a certain fellow named CW, if I catch the gist of the aforementioned post.
If it means anything to you at all, I have immense respect for the way you addressed this is in this post. Sincere best wishes in your future plans.

I think he is refering to people that dont know THE WHOLE STORY.Not the pool fan in general.

Do any of us mere mortals understand WHY when you asked Grady to be invided you were met with harsh words?

Is this supposed to be common knowledge?

I mean, so long as everyone is airing their dirty laundry here on the forum, it would be nice for some of us to know what the underlying reason is to begin with.

if anyone cares to research my post history, you will find that I have discussed, on more than one occasion, that I did indeed divulge the fact I attempted to get grady invited. Furthermore, I conveyed this to grady, DIRECTLY, through a pm, at the time. The kool aid crowd I referred to are the ones who have no first hand knowledge of the facts, but blindly choose to make negative contributions based solely on the remarks of others. In general, I have nothing but respect for the fans of pool. I consider myself to be one and the SAME.

As far as the reason grady wasn't invited, well, he knows why. I have alluded to why in the past, but at this time, nothing constructive would be accomplished by revisisting that topic again.

This is exactly the point I've been trying to make. I just didn't like the idea that you personally tried to get Grady in and he was still blaming you.

Good rep to you, Randy. This is the noble way to go. Now hopefully Grady will follow with poise and we can move on.

Let me guess, you took a poll in New York City?

i made a post in a thread a few hours ago, cautioning Grady because i feel he is doing himself more harm than good here, he is a ledgend, champion and has given 10000 times more to this sport than 99% of the players out there. I just want to see Grady in the future the same as the Grady I knew in Vegas years ago. He moves better in the box than the net, he can use the net to his advantage, i hope he does in the future,

NYC Dude thanks for the thread.

Look Randy you put on an event for one pocket players I dont care who you invite or who's on the roster. I will make every effort to be there.Like I did and flew out to NYC for the event at the Roseland Ballroom for the 14.1 US Open. In the finals were Efren Reyes a Filipino, Chin (?) from Taiwan (2) and Ralf Souquet (who won the whole thing). I and my fellow Americans enjoyed the whole darn thing. I attended even the qualifiers and got to see Jack Colavito, Bob Maihdoff, Flaco, Johnny Ervolino, and yes, Grady Mathews. That was great as well.
If Efren, Cliff, Shannon, Tony Chohan, Scott Frost, Ike Runnels, etc. are there I will be there. I dont care if you dont invite any one over 50. And I am 60. I will be there. All I care is about seeing some great pool. It aint a political rally for me. It aint a political statement. One pocket is an epidemic like Strawberry said and those of us who have the disease need our fix.
Personally I dont care what kind of person you are or what your motives are I want to be there when the balls click. I didnt care if Jerry Rice could no longer play for the 49's. I still would watch them. If Nolan Ryan couldnt pitch no more for the Angels that didnt stop me for rooting them.
There I said it. I dont care if you put it in the upper reaches of New England or in some trailer park somewhere in the sticks or in the hot desert of the Southwest. The only question for me is when is the event going to take place???????

Do I need to define the word infested to you? these are your fellow americans you are writing about. So I have now come to see that you don't care about foreign players, OR american players. Well, ain't this cute. You state your piece of mind by initiating this ostentacious thread, giving me your "lifetime punishment," thinking I cannot respond? You see, Randy, I can still reply and state my piece, without having any follow-up on your end.

There is no doubt that your sponsorship of a 14.1 pool tournament brought joy to many pool enthusiasts around the world, and for that, you should be commended. Where I have a great difficulty, though, is what I deem as the pompous attitude you have displayed.

I was appalled to read your opinion about the owner of Bill and Billie's pool room in Arnold, Maryland, after he held a qualifier for the 14.1 tournament in New Jersey. This man is one of pool's strongest supporters for the entire region.

He is a humble man, with a very unassuming-type personality. He keeps his equipment well maintained and goes all out to make sure it stays that way. If it were not for this owner of Bill and Billie's, pool would not be so bright for many pool players of all caliber in the region, to include men AND women, amateurs AND professionals. He hosts regional events, weekly tournaments, in-house leagues, State championships, qualifiers for WPBA events, et cetera.

So you get upset with this owner of Bill and Billie's, belittle him on this pool forum, and say never again will a qualifier of "yours" be held there. Just because you have wealth does not give you the right to demean a man who's been supporting pool a hell of a lot longer than you. So the shame you cast upon me, I throw it right back in your face.

As far as "Yankee-infested," yeah, it's a term I used to describe what anyone could see when they looked at the player roster. I live below the Mason-Dixon line, and this is jargon that I have heard my entire life. I'm a Southern girl, and "Yankee-infested" is a term of art that was in existence long before I used it. However, you did ensure YOUR FRIENDS got on the list, didn't you, because you were the sponsor. "World open championship"? It was Randy's Rules, Randy's Pool, and Randy's Money, and there you have it.

Though I do commend you for bringing 14.1 pool to those pool enthusiasts and pool players who enjoy this discipline of pocket billiards, I will not pay heed to a man who demands to be treated as if he's the King of Siam because he's got wealth. Pool should not be turned into a classism system.

In sum, this forum is one which holds a variety of opinions, and as such, I try to understand opinions which differ from mine, but when it gets personal, with insults hurled at me and/or mine, I do respond in kind. As such, I now have given my piece in response to your grandiose dissertation of a thread.

Strawberry was right. Pool is an epidemic. I have no wealth to enable me to make things happen, but I have tried very hard to give what little I have back to the pool community. So what, I guess. That was then, and this is now.

First of all, Randy, that was a great post and spot on. I hope that you and Grady move past this and are able to work together someday. I think that would be awesome. For those that don't know, when I declined my spot, I asked Randy if my spot could go to Grady. Randy can confirm that I asked him that. Randy's response to that request was exactly verbatim what you read in his initial post.

Grady, you know I admire and respect you as a player, as a legend, and as a person, or I would not have asked Randy to give you my spot. I will support you and any event you decide to put together. Hopefully the arguing can end and cooperation will prevail.

With that out of the way, I'll address something else, and yes JAM it has to do with you. Recently, particpating in this forum feels like a dysfunctional, abusive relationship. Every morning I wake up to read this poison that flies from your keyboard, and your poison has been directed at many others, not just Randy and myself. I can list 7-8 other people you argue with on a daily basis, you argue all day, and yes its all flaming, whether or not you want to admit that. I have responded to many of your posts - and it seems that the more respectful that I am with my words, the more vicious your responses are. I'm not alone when I say that I am tired of it. I have spoken to the mods about this and I was told to put you on ignore. I did, but I still see your words when others quote you - so the ignore feature is not the answer either. I wish you nothing but the best, and hopefully someday you will find a way to interact with people here without being so aggressive and ruthless. If not, I hope the moderators recognize your participation for what it is - trollish and mean spirited.

I have been a member of this forum since its inception. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting people through our interaction with the topics that are discussed here. That is a great value provided by this forum, and for that I thank Mike Howerton for building this forum and providing this for us. However... I don't enjoy this anymore. I don't like arguing. I don't like reading things that constantly piss me off, and I sure don't like having to defend myself at every turn because someone has decided to to place me at the top of their shitlist. That being said, from here on forward I will not be around here very much because this has turned into nothing but aggravation for me. Life is too short for that. I have better and more constructive ways to spend my time. My friends know how to get in contact with me (Myspace/e-mail/phone calls - other forums) - I will now log out - and stay logged out - and go back to living a positive and uplifting life.

Great post, I find myself looking at this forum less and less also. I didn't say it in the other thread because it's just lost on her sadly.

I watched in amazement in thread after thread, poster after poster was attacked in the same way I was, the same vicious crap time after time. It has to be said JAM you cause 90% of most of it, you don't "respond in kind" you START it MOST of the time!

I know you probably can't see it, but I'm pretty sure most of the forum does! Yes your reports and other stuff are great contributions but lately anything positive you contribute is far out weighed by your hate filled words.

Blackjack, it is fine and dandy for you to express your opinions, but I can assure you that if you were labeled a "bigot" and a "racist," you wouldn't be a happy camper. You contributed to this attack on my character, more than once, and did so behind the scenes with PMs to other forum members.

I have received e-mails, PMs, and phone calls from other forum members about your contact with them in reference to me, not just a few times, but many. You have an existing track record on pool forums of being a good contributing poster, but there is another side to your forum personality which isn't quite so pleasant.

"You can dish it out, but you can't take it." Does that sound familiar?

You doggedly attacked my character over and over again throughout the past several months, labeling me a member of the KKK, a bigot, a racist, et cetera. I found it quite offensive and told you so.

You are the one with hate-filled words directed at me, and when I politely asked you to lay off and move forward, you continued it. The "vicious crap," if you will, came from your fingertips. I will take responsibility for my end of it, responding to you, but the whole "vicious crap" emanated from calling me names, offensive names which assassinated my character.

I have NEVER been a racist, a bigot, or a member of the KKK. Anyone would be quite upset to be called those things.

ACTUALLY!!!

ALL the people who labeled you a racist / Bigot / etc (I think the current count is approaching 20 forum members at a rough guess!) did so because you keep insulting people by race! I agreed with the original member who labeled you a racist based on what YOU posted. Why do you think so many people keep pulling you up on it JAM? are they all in it together, so many people from so many different places, nationalities, age groups?

I couldn't help myself pull you up on your love of pool players in the last thread as it's probably the most hypocritical post I've seen ever on these forums. How dare you attack other posters for bashing pool players with your track record!

PS
Please can you quote the KKK reference as I don't recall posting that? (I will of course understand if it was another poster and not myself ;) )
