Pics of Danny DiLiberto at Betmore's Basement (and a surprise location)

Betmore... you must have the best pool basement in America...no shit.

You're obviously OCD with your basement. I looked closely at your pics. Each and every hanging picture is 100% level and squared up with the one next to it. Perfect. :)

Thanks for the photos!!

We then moved to the Black Widow's Lair for some more lessons. Here is chefjeff with the actress Janet Leigh (from that "Psycho" movie)....damn she plays well for an acress.

Funny. I would have thought, given cheffjeff's NPR posts... That he would look abnormal. He looks like some regular dude off the street..

:D :D :D

I am looking forward to some straight pool and one-pocket in Betmore's Basement when I am heading for the states :)

Your basement looked great!!!

nice pictures willie!

could you tell us a bit more about the ten footer? What's it like playing on it? Better than a nine footer or do you find there's any drawbacks? (apart from difficulty of course). They look so cool.

One of my fantasies is going up to heaven to play SVB some ten ball on a diamond 10 footer - and kicking some ass! :D

anybody ever match up on that 10fter? i know a guy in terre haute that would like to play some on there

Mac,
If it's Bobby D., send him over. It would be my pleasure to match up....errrr....donate.

I am not a regular in the room; but I understand that Steve Oaks practices and competes on it; otherwise not used much EXCEPT for matching up (it's more of a one-pocket room).

worriedcowmeat,
The pockets on the table are generous, the cloth is fine, and it is level.

I find that straight pool is probably a bit more enjoyable on the larger table. The balls are able to spread a bit further; fewer clusters, and more escape options (especially more balls go into the side pockets with the larger mid-table area). The size of the table literally FORCES you psychologically to concentrate on each and every shot. Because it is relatively unfamiliar, each and every shot appears missable (and it follows that every shot is fresh and interesting). Positioning is a bit different because of the size, but seemed to come quickly. I adapted to the size more easily than I can adapt to new/different cloth on a 9 footer - not a huge challenge.

The long shots didn't bother me, because I usually play on very tight pockets; so the table-length shots seemed a bit easier on the 10-footer than on the tight 9-footers - just my opinion. I loved it.

The traditional ten footers of Mosconi's early days had tight pockets. Now THAT would be intimidating.

Though I am no great player, I was RAINING 20's on that table (which is pretty good for me on a tight 9-footer). I think my high run was like 35 (I played on it for about 4 hours, with and without competition).

no its not bobby d and my buddy tried to match up with oakes...steve wanted to do a race and my buddy wanted to do an ahead set...so no game....he plays about bobbys speed....u wanting to play 9 or 10 ball? and what can he bet?

Willie,

I'm so disappointed that I couldn't make it to this. It sounds like everybody got a good dose of knowledge and had a lot of fun as well. I also have played 14.1 on that 10 ft table, and in my opinion that's how 14.1 should be played. However, except for you guys me and my friend might be the only people who have played straight pool on that table or even in that poolroom as a matter of fact. I think that table is normally exclusively used for one pocket as your alluded. One hole on that table is a good time as well. I think I would have gone back there more often, but that room itself is not one of my favorites.

Nice Basement

Whats the platter/shield/???? hanging on the wall.
Like Spider said ... nice job with the collage wall. Very cool.

What a contrast between your room and the "pool room" you guys went to!!!!! :D  What do they have on the ceiling there???

If I ever get around Indy I am going to hope its on a Betmore event day. I would love to attend one of these things.

Thanks for the pics

Mac,
Sorry, but the window is only open for Bobby D. because I know him; and like him a lot (anyone with a passion for 14.1 is my kind of opponent; and it's really all I know how to play). I'm pretty sure I could convince him to give me a decent spot.

If your friend plays Bobby's speed, he's too much for me. Thanks for the inquiry though.

Frank,
Actually the pictures posted show only half of my pool room; similar decorations in the other half of the room; and plenty of space to play. There are several decorative copper platters throughout the room, to match the copper containers, and the copper fixtures on the table - all courtesy of my wife. She has good taste; and I couldn't care less what the room looks like as long as I can play. The room is attached to a movie viewing area and bar area (big plasma tv that rotates out of the wall to point towards the pool area). I really never leave the basement unless forced. Come and visit if you are in the area.

We did go to Executive Billiards. The floor is concrete with potholes. There is no ceiling, just pipes and rafters. The walls are broken. Oddly enough the players and owner were very friendly and courteous, and the restroom was VERY clean. I would go back to play.

P.S. - I am working on the next event; hopefully Danny D. and Efren together will visit the "Basement" just before or after the 2009 DCC for a one-pocket clinic. Hope I haven't jinxed it.

yea no problem just trying to stir up a set for my lil buddy...everyone seems to think bobby d is the favorite playing him but who knows...he wont play either

Special Honors goes to ...

... Williebetmore! He did a great job of organizing this very special event for Danny's students. Not only was it a once-in-a-life time learning exprience, it was fun and memorialable.

Willie was/is a most gracious host and his desire for our sport can not be described in any words. Danny said it best "You have the desire it takes". Many Thanks to him along with Danny!

Best Regards,
Hal

D,
There is definitely room for improvement in the Basement; but it is certainly adequate for my purposes.

It was VERY polite of you not to make any comments questioning gender or masculinity - it took a LONG time to get those freaking pictures level.

My wife is currently designing a new house; with a basement that will make this one look like the ghetto (room for the 9-footer, a bar table, and a 12 foot snooker table - spaceship theme - sounds garish but is actually pretty interesting).

Willie thank you for showing the kind of respect that a champion like Danny deserves. You are a grand example of how we who are quick to criticize all elements of the game can learn to really support the game and its experts. I hope all of the participants enjoyed their time. I know they could only gain in knowledge from spending time with Danny. And a nod to Jeannette Lee who took the time after her back surgery to host your group. The pics were great!
By the way does your wife have a sister? The last thing on the mind of the women I hang out with would be to convert the basement into a pool haven.

Oops, forgot to mention that the famous (??infamous??) Betmore Cup trophy is on the drink rail in the picture, next to Danny's right shoulder. The full time security guards are just out of frame. If Mark Griffin ever man's up, he may play for it.

Williebetmore,

My spy from the West Coast tells me that M. Griffin's out every day and night practicing like a demon and bragging to anyone within an ear shot (and who's not quick enough to dodge) about how he's going to make a visit to your basement very soon to snag your "Prized Betmore Cup".;)

SD,
I'm assuming he is practicing his "breaking and entering" skills, rather than his pool skills since he really has no chance to win on the table.

I warn him that the "Cup" is guarded round the clock by the famous Pinkerton's (well, it's actually Bobby Pinkerton's Lawn, Garden, and Dog Walking service; but those kids....errr...guards...are ferocious).

I have NEVER been beaten by someone from Alaska, so I will assume that the Cup will remain in Betmore's Basement (I have chosen to work on my sharking skills rather than the pool game; so at least the match should be interesting). I will also lay in a large supply of alcoholic beverages, just in case it looks like he can make more than 2 balls in a row (which of course would put him fairly close to my current skill level).
