Pool Wars by Jay Helfert

Just got an e-mail from the production department at Bookmasters, the company who is printing Pool Wars. Expected delivery date is now March 20. I had originally thought it might be as early as the 15th. I ask all of you who have ordered already to please be patient. My plan it to ship all advance orders via First Class mail to save time on my end. After that I will be using Media Mail which takes several days longer to arrive.

I am as anxious as anyone else to physically have copies of my book in my hands. Looks like that will be within a couple of weeks, and maybe another few days to get them to you. On International orders I know it will take longer. I will send them the fastest way I can that is not too pricey. Thanks again, we have well over 250 orders right now.

You know I was thinking about what I would do if I actually made any money selling my books. I'm certainly not a rich man, but I have very small debts and overhead. My conclusion is that it will allow me to do more in the pool world. I'm very satisfied personally when I can contribute a few dollars to a good cause, or an individual who needs the help. And I mean this sincerely. I know I always kid around on here, but there are many serious threads which get my attention as well. Like the recent one about Tony Sulsar from Texas. I feel like we have a big family here who can do so much to help someone when help is needed.

To me this is the best part of being a member of the AZ family.

Besides some of those good deeds, I can think of something you could do with some of those profits. :winknudge:

But seriously,
I'm very glad your book sales are going so well. You deserve it.

You've written a book that pool players and those interested in knowing about pool players will want to read. The pool world is a small but vast world if you know what I mean.

Cool

Not going to do that Kevin, but I will say that the first 50 orders came in via Paypal on Feb. 20-22. If you paid by Paypal then, you are on top of the list.

I sent my payment via PayPal on Feb 21. Glad to hear I'm near the top. Looking forward to reading this book.

Thanks again Jay

I'm looking forward to the book, Jay. A man who can both play pool and write - never thought I would see the day.

Howard

Thanks Howard, but I don't know about the playing pool part. OnePocketGhost came to my house last night and we played One Pocket for several hours, for a friendly little wager (under $100 a game). I had him stuck a couple of games but he got even. I just don't feel like I can play anything like my best game anymore.

The Ghost moves real good, and he banks very good too. I think I shoot a little better than him. We're a pretty even game, but like I said, once upon a time I went looking for guys like him. Now he's looking for guys like me.

But like Bunny Rogoff once said, "I'd rather be a has-been than a never-was."

Don't sweat it Jay!

I"m just happy to be receiveing it and I know you must feel like an expectant father waiting for the birth. Congratulations.

I know I'll like it. I've read enough of your writing to know I'll like the style and the content can't miss us pool players.

Move over McGoorty!

You know, you hit the nail on the head. I am excited about seeing my book in print. It took me long enough to write one. I actually started writing this book in December of 2007.

My first book, "The Zen Of Pool" I started over ten years ago and I don't know if I'll ever finish it. It's about a million things that are not in any instructional book, that I learned in the last 40 years. Some are just little tips and others are major bits of knowledge that will give you an advantage at the table. A lot has to do with the mental side of pool that is rarely discussed.

I'll give you an example. When I used to go in a poolroom and make a game with someone, they would usually want to warm up before we played. And that's on their home court. I would sit there patiently and watch them hit balls, all the time seeing the speed of the table and looking for any rolls. When they got done, I would go to the table and set up one long straight in shot. I would take my time, take dead aim and fire it in. Then I would look at them and say, "I'm ready."

Do you have any idea of the psychological impact that had on my opponent? Here I am in their poolroom and I take a one shot warm up. The way I looked at it was that I was playing every day and was already in good stroke. I'd get the feel of the table soon enough. I won many a match right from the get go, when my opponent started out weak. If I got him down, I never let up. It was usually just a question of how much they were going to go for.

Me either.

LOL

Jay -

I have a link to your book on my website -

and in the book section -

I hope you sell a million of them!

Thanks David. I don't know if I'll really make much money on this book, but it is somehow more satisfying than writing articles for billiard publications that have a one month life expectancy. Maybe ten and twenty years from now, somebody will still be enjoying this book. I sure hope so.

Jay,

I ordered a copy back on 2/21, so I have an "early number" copy coming. I just ordered another copy and would like to reserve #500. I put this notation in the PayPal payment.

The other book you mention about instructional and mental aspects of the game sounds very interesting. Please try to complete it as well!

Financial or otherwise, you do great things for the game. For example, the OnePocket Challenge at the DCC is something that you donate your time and money to without making penny one....and the guys love it. I can see that becoming bigger and bigger every year. I think by next year, at least a few guys will come up with some type of break that will give them an advantage....it's just a matter of someone like Cory hitting break shots for a few days to figure out the patterns and reactions.

Can't wait for the book to arrive!

Thanks! I think Gabe's 60 is going to be the magic number for many, many years. I don't care how they break the balls. That 60 could well be like Mosconi's 526. I'm not sure it will last as long though.:)

A real pool hustlers dream... Make some great forum posts, host a greater One Pocket tournament, make everyone believe you are writing a war/horror/whore pool book, pre-sell 2000 copies, take the money and run to the Phillipines and live among the young Asian beauties. I like it---my hero. LOL

I wish I had thought of that before I paid for the printing. :p
Oh well too late now! ;)

I'd be willing to bet high that the actual truth will be that ten to twenty years from now there will be hundreds or even thousands of pool players who wish they had bought the book when they had the chance.

Just think Rags to Rifleman.

I hope the book does great. You certainly deserve it.
