Quality of debate on az

I am becoming more and more disappointed in the quality of the postings on the site now.

Casting back a couple of years I am sure that the Average IQ level of posters has dropped substantially. If course there are forum giants like Jay, Jam, JoeyA being the most regular and there are still those with something interesting to say, but they seem to post less frequently.

But there are an awful lot of pointless posts and a further lot of posters who don't have a clue about the things that they expound on here.

Threads with important and intelligent content rarely get beyond page 3 before veering of topic. The original MESSAGE FROM JOHNNY ARCHER is a good example. That has randomly gone off topic in many different directions.
Some posts contain so little content and are swamped by Trudeau style informercials, cliches or uninteresting gems of philosophy. You have to search for the content among this drivel.
Worse still are the very unfunny amateur comedians (don't give up the day job) and the
smutty brigade who degrade the site..

I am not a prude by any means but this website is a valuable conduit for discussing important issues on the game and to sort through the dross for the gems is getting harder and harder.

I can't wait to be flamed for this but try and keep it at a constructive level.

I apologise to those of you who might be offended by my comments because i know that there are still a lot of intelligent people who lurk out there and they know themselves that I am not targetting them.

Doug, you write whatever you feel like and express yourself. You are a giant in the industry, no doubt, and I do understand your disappointment.

The environment of AzBilliards isn't what it was in 2004 when I joined. Because it has grown so large, it was inevitable that the content would take off in a different direction at times. :(

That said, I know you have taken a hiatus from here, as I have. Many times, I have quit logging in, and I only read the Main Page for the news, so I can keep up with the pool smut. :grin-square:

The only thing I know for sure is when I meet people like you and others in person, I am glad I came to AzBilliards. Without it, valued friendships would have never been formed.

Sometimes logging out of this forum for a hiatus allows one to regain their enthusiasm for pool. Trust me, I do it all the time. It works! ::D

Then when you return, the dribble and nonsensical posts won't bother you as much. Take care, my friend. Hang in there with me! :)
 
I pretty much agree with you Doug. I just post less often and skip over the inane comments.

I don't know were you throw me.

But I will say that some do not know how to 'argue'/discuss with relevant on topic logic & will resort to going off topic so they can maybe win a small battle that does not really apply to the 'war' at hand & then want to say 'see I won the war'. Then when that is not accepted they resort to uncivil slurs, innuendos, & insults.

Some with arrogant egos do not seem to understand that it is about convincing the other party with logical 'arguments' & not just 'I said so, so that's the way it is.' Or...'well that is the way it has always been, so that has to be correct'.

The forum would be a better place if it had more 'civil discussions' with 'logical arguments' & less egos of an arrogant condescending nature trying to impose their will on others.

Naturally, all of the above are just my opinions & I'm fairly sure that some will come along to prove my points.

Your assessment is on the money, Doug.

The quality of debate here has sunk to all time lows (and the future does not look good). Long ago, maybe on a good day, it was HS level here. But open any thread now at random and anyone can see AZ has become a grammar school playground. Everything from the R rated avatars, to some of the pseudonyms, to infantile reasoning, and all the rest. Logic and civility have left the building and it don't look like either one of them is coming back anytime soon.

Do you have any idea how many times I've stopped reading a thread because people start throwing puppy pictures around or insert random "inspirational" pictures and giant font in the middle of a paragraph? No, you don't, because I don't feel the need to make a post about it.

I agree with you for the most part.
At the same time, I'm admittedly guilty of occasionally throwing my amateur comedic water balloons on the fire, simply for no other reason than to distract the engaged parties and remind them that this is just a pile of letters and words on a screen. And its just pool.

That said, I must also insist that while it's frequently not pretty, the debates are a healthy and informative, although somewhat inefficient, way of letting the public in on the sometimes deep dark truth of matters that they:
- might not find out any other way
or
- heaven forbid, might find out after its too late.

The mind is a horrible wonderful thing.

AZB is a model of civility and intellectual strength compared to the musician websites/forums I frequent. If you want to laugh until you pass out, read an argument between two drummers over "which are the best drum heads?" I'll bet you didn't know that race, religion and political affiliation are major determinants of drum knowledge.

It's so funny to read on AZB about what Mike DeChaine did or didn't do. It doesn't hold a candle to musicians unless he sexually assaulted someone's wife and then tried to strangle the husband while he slept on the sofa. And the apologies! OMG, you'd be banned from a musician forum if you even hinted at apologizing...for anything.

As much as I appreciate AZB and have learned everything I know about pool here (and youtube.com), it really is a pretty boring place. Sorry.

Too funny. And 100% correct IMO.

AZ is an old folks home compared to many forums.

I do get pissed sometimes because everything gets side tracked and so many experts without experience but its still the best place for pool anywhere on the interwebs.
 
We don't debate here. We tell I stories. And besides, if any debating were to take place it would quickly turn into argument and end up like the aiming war of a few years back. That thing lasted for months and cost thousands of lives. I myself was twice wounded.
The best way to deal with this place is to put in your two cents worth, every now and then, and not worry about it. :smile:
