Very sad for me. I've known and played pool with Dave for over four decades. He was a very good player who loved One Pocket and a straight shooter in life whose word was gold. I'll miss you buddy! :frown:

KEITH McCREADY: Just heard the news. I can't believe it. I mean, Dave had a funny way of going, but him and I always got along good. He didn't strike people a certain way they would expect, but deep down inside, he had a good heart.

I remember him back in the Belflower days when I was 13 and 14 when Vern Peterson had the place, and then he opened a place down the street after that. We used to gamble playing one pocket, once in a while, 9-7. He was always a tough campaigner. We had some battles. He would win sometimes racing to 4 or 5 for a hundred or something. He never would bet a lot of money, but he would at least bet something. Always real tough to match up with, real careful with is dough.

I'll miss you, Dave. This is sad news.

He always had that smile, a very hospitable man. I got to know him more from the player side, than the personal side, but he was a great Rounder. I remember when I was SURPRISED....to say the least, when he rolled into Shooters in Olathe in his Chevy mini/camper/van/w. shower, WOW never thought I'd see the dog go out of his yard, this was before his room up near Santa Monica.
Glad to of know you, you always made me aware, life never GAVE you anything, you had to work for it. He's was kinda like a Minnesota Fats, was difficult for anyone to truly Know the ''speed of the dog''.

RIP ma man, and to all his loved ones my best to you all.

Long Beach Bill 76-81

I just saw him at HTB last month prior to the 1P tourney. He was having serious health problems. I always enjoyed talking with him and respected him for being a hard working businessman. I first saw him in 1982 or 1983 at the Stagger Inn. He had an off beat but very funny sense of humor. Sad news.

RIP Dave!

A great man and a great friend! Thought me a lot in pool!
First time I ever played him was back in 95, I believe and learned a lot!
Just saw him couple of weeks ago too! :(
Rest in peace Dave!

He was, as I say a product of ''our'' environment. Not often but, often enough the billiard world creates, another ''entity'' and the name Underdog made this man UNIQUE and He Was........the moniker ''dog''.... always gave em 1/2 ball spot MINIMUM before NEGOTIATING minds came together. Smart man, because we ''all need weight'' in this game OF LIFE ;)

Sorry to learn of Dave's passing. May he rest in peace and continue to hit em straight.

Dave

I will miss Dave. I enjoyed chatting with him these past 2 years at Hard Times. Whenever I needed help with a shot or had a question, he always had time to help me. He would usually come in about noon and play a few hours before he went to work at his business BreakZone Billiards and Game Room Supplies. He played with a Schon R14 cue which he said he had played with since the early 90s.

A 1993 year-end Pro Billiards Tour listing has him ranked 37th out of 97 players.

Here is a link to a good article from 1987 by the LA Times about Dave:

Sorry to hear the news, Dave was a good guy...I remember him from Bob's Billiards on Orangethorpe & Magnolia...

Dave was a hard working, straight up guy. He had a ton of pool knowledge that he was willing to share regardless of your playing level. It will seem strange to not see him at Hard Times and to not have him at BreakZone to fulfill pool needs. Hate to see the good guys leave us.

Bob's Billiards was on Beach and Ball. Were you thinking of Lucky John's 4 on Orangethorpe? Either way, I'm surprised to hear Underdog spent time at either place.

I think Bobby was on Beach and Ball 2x, but he was on orangethorpe and magnolia in the early to mid 70's, then opened up the original hard times in costa mesa. Back in those days, Dave was everywhere.
