rank these players

Based on an action match up.

1. Alex
2. Nick
3. Shannon
4. Cornbread (Never saw the guy play so I can't speak with any first hand knowledge but I would bet on all three of the above in an all around of 9 Ball, One Pocket, Banks and 14.1 during their prime)

Edit: Had to change my post. Thought you asked who the best player was in general.

ditto

1. Varner
2. Shannon
3. Cornbread
4. Alex

Varner and Shannon are known for years and years as jam up 1 pocket, 9 ball, and bank players. Varner also known the same for straight pool. Cornbread known for 1 hole and 9 ball. Alex only known for 9 ball. Now, I know Alex plays good 1 hole, but it is not why he's famous. Varner and Shannon are known throughout the world as JAM up in all the games.

The above is based on their primes of course. Today, if they were to play 9 ball, banks, 1 hole, and straight, I'd put the order at:
1. Shannon
2. Alex
3. Varner

ask shannon or varner if they would like to play alex one hole?

I wonder if the people on the forum who have been around during Cornbread's reign and also the current players would put him higher on the list, or even first. From what was written on here, he was a warrior and TOP TOP gambler.

Chris, there is no point in our discussions. We both know that match up would probably never happen. But the original poster asked for best all around. If Shannon vs Alex ever played a multi-discipline session (none of us are holding our breaths), I definitely like Shannon. If they play just a select game, then depending on the game, their would be a clear favorite between the two.

Good day.

if they played 10 ball then banks then one pocket then 8 ball then 14.1 this would not be close.
good day.

On any given day, with Cornbread in his prime? Any one of these guys would/could come out on top. Just my opinion...

no disrespect to shannon i am not the one who wanted to know how he would do with alex.
alex one of the best players and gamblers of all time.

who's the best all around player?

1. alex
2. nick varner
3. shannon
4. cornbread

Assuming all four were in their prime, I'll take Varner if they're playing One Pocket, 9-Ball, Banks and 14.1. Shannon and Alex tied for second. Nick's a big favorite at 14.1 and equal to Shannon and Red at Banks. He can also win (it's close) against any one of the three others at One Pocket or 9-Ball. Nick stands up well in a long session and rarely has a weak moment. He NEVER gives up! I've seen the other guys have bad days and bad matches.

On a game by game basis, I like Varner at 14.1, Shannon at Banks, Alex at One Pocket and 9-Ball. For REALLY big money, like a $1,000 9-Ball or 5K a game One Hole, Cornbread might just be the favorite. Although Alex and Shannon handle high stakes pretty well also. Red could be a very intimidating opponent for anyone!

No disrespect intended but Varner has more titles than the rest of those guys combined.

Speaking of Alex, is he playing pool again or is he still playing cards?

Good point. Those accomplishments speak volumes...to those that aren't biased.
