Marvel said:Ok. I take Evgeny Stalev![]()
I saw Evgeny play Efren with 7-8 handicap. They played 20gbp (40usd) per rack.
Evgeny wasn't motivated and lost few racks and quit.
Later in the evening Evgeny played Bustamante. I saw Evgeny making amazing shots, his motivation was high. Later I saw Busty paying him some cash and leaving the table with frustration on his face.
I asked Evgeny how much he won. He said "200 pounds (400 dollars), score 5-0". I asked how much he got weight, Evgeny answered "Nothing of course, Bustamante cannot play One Pocket"
Later I saw him beat Efren for few racks also.
That happened in Cardiff, either 01, 02 or 03.
I don't know how much Evgeny's Pyramid career has taken from his pool skills, but I believe he's one of the top One Pocket players in the world today, still.
I'm not a gambler, if I was, I could take easy 5k from you Jay![]()
Ronnie Alcano gave lot's of credit to "russian boy" about 1pkt also..
yobagua said:Only one thing. Russia is on the continent of Asia so Evgeny qualifies as an Asian player.
jay helfert said:Okay, I stand corrected. I forgot about him. Thanks for the heads up. I do know he plays very good One Pocket. How good, no one seems to really know. He can give Ike a ball and I'll let him play anyway.
Shawn Armstrong said:Ahem..................Bustamante, number 7 on Bill's list, lives in Germany. He plays in their league system. He might be a good teacher...........

What number would you rank yourself in your prime?
Some say for a few years, you were the greatest 9 ball player allive. I would think in the past 40 years, you would rank high in one pocket as well.
By the way, you once said I was the best third base coach ever. I would like to think that I still hold that title.
no doubt and exactly the way i felt when i saw him play.i would tell anyone that has never watched him play one pocket to do themself a huge favor and make an effort to see it.i dont play one pocket but in a few hours of watching him play one night i learned more than i knew after 20+ plus years of pool.yobagua said:Bill thanks so much for posting your thoughts on the board. IMO you just brought up the quality a 100%. There are always a lot of negative minded jerks to wank your chain. Please pay no mind to them. They just want attention. This is your list and I appreciate your thoughts. As I have your wonderful tape from Accu Stats that talks about the theory of the game. Every one should get a copy.
Now about Efren. I have seen him live against local guys and some tournaments but in 2005 I specifically went to DCC to watch him play against the best. Every night he just amazed me playing all comers at night and tournament in the day. He was non stop.I saw him destroy Cory and Tang with almost no effort.Giving everyone weight. His shots was trememendous and even the pros would come down at 2 in the morning just to watch Efren play. People were just shaking their heads saying this guy is from another planet. There were just no words to describe his talent.
Marvel said:Shawn, just give up.
Busty hasn't lived in Germany since last millenium, and Europeans are light years from Americans in One Pocket.
The interest is here now, so maybe this 'light year' could be few years, but we are far from top ten at the moment. Believe me.
wincardona said:At one time I did beat everyone that I played, playing 9 ball.1972 to be exact. I quit playing around 1974 ,and then returned around 1981. The only player that I didn't play was Lassiter. I honestly don't think I would of beaten him if we had of played. I'm pretty bad on years, but around 1984 I think I could of given any American player big problems playing one pocket. I remember 3 one pocket tournaments that I finished second twice and third once. All around the same time.Joyner beat me 5to4 in the finals of the US Open in Kalamazoo, I couldn't sleep the night before the final match. Too nervous, I never have been regarded as a tournament player. Same thing happened to me in Roanoke Va.when Dave Bollman defeated me 5 to 4 in the finals. Mike Sigel beat me in the semi finals, the year Varner won in ,I believe Baltimore.
wincardona said:Several months ago I was reading a rating list of the best one pocket players in the world. Some I agreed with ,others I didn't.I will post the top 10 both current, and also in the last 40 years. (my opinion) INCIDENTALLY,I GAMBLED WITH ALL OF THEM.I would like to add this, My top 5 players are my honest opinion that will NEVER change,in my last 40 year list, unless there will be some talented player that will change my mind. But as it stands now there they are. There are probably 5 or so other players that could fit comfortably to make it a top 20 list. And I think most knowledgeable people can figure that out.
CURRENT ---------LAST 40 YEARS
#1 REYES ----------#1 REYES
#2 JOYNER ----------#2 R.ALLEN
#3 FROST ----------#3 E.KELLY
#4 CHOHAN ----------#4 JOYNER
#5 DUEL ----------#5 BUGS
#6 J.JONES ----------#6 FROST
#7 BUSTAMANTE------#7 T. CHOHAN
#8 S. DALTON -------- #8 S.DALTON
#9 L.NEVIL -----------#9 J.BREIT
#10 G. OWEN ---------#10 BOSTON SHORTY
-----------------------#11 Allen Hopkins
-----------------------#12 Steve Cook
-----------------------#13 Mark Tad
Six through thirteen are very close. On any given day.
watchez said:I don't think I have ever seen you act nervous. If you are, you hide it well.
I know, even though I didn't get to see it, you gave Louie Roberts 9-7 for the cash. Obviously Louie was known as a nine ball player, but he had enough fire power & cue ball control to be an effective one pocket player. To beat Louie with that spot and put him on 7, I would think you would fall in the top 25 somewhere.
I'm not Watchezhemicudas said:Using that same thought process Watchez, and I do, how good would a one pocket player have to be to give Larry Hubbart, who played better 9 ball than Louie in 1979, the hit and a pick and win? Who was a good enough one pocket player to do that? Give me a few names, then I will tell you who it was.

With the recent passing of N.Y. Blackie and Mike Betts, I think this song (though not about pool) brings back memories of those that have gone on ahead.... people gone, but not forgotten.

Wow! If I had put that video together, I think I'd just sit back for the rest of my life and whenever someone asked me what I did or had done, I'd just play it for them and smile. It's not really pool-related, but thanks for the link.Smorgass Bored said:When I read Billy's post mentioning the players of the past 40 years and others bring up the names of players past, I think of the great players that have passed on.
