I tend to agree with Ross on this. Reputation was designed so that new forum members could see who the most valued contributors were. Reputation should be given for a solid contribution the the AZ community, insight, problem solving, a sense of humor that produces a few laughs, etc. Giving it out with no real rationale behind it lowers its value significantly in my opinion.

I checked the Member's list when I saw this thread, and 1pRoscoe was at the top of Page 2. He's moved up 5 spots since then.

Personally, I think the rep system is kind of fun. I enjoy giving out rep just to let a poster know I enjoyed their post. I don't always want to make my own post saying something like "TAP TAP TAP". I also like seeing a rep come in because it means that the person enjoyed my post for whatever reason.
I don't think we should take the rep too seriously though. It's not supposed to be taken as "who's the best AZ'er" or "who is most important". It does sort of make me go "hmm" when I see an outstanding poster who has very little rep. I try to make the effort to give those people rep.
If I left AZ today, I don't expect anyone to really notice, so in that sense there are a ton of AZ'ers who "deserve" rep a lot more than I do. I'd rather not be seen as a tool, but if I make a dumb ass post, I expect to be called out on it... I might actually make an effort to improve if it makes sense. In the end, you can't make everyone happy, but this place is huge. The bigger it gets, the more chaotic it will be when we piss each other off. I think it's better for AZ that we all make an effort to not get on each other's nerves. JMHO. On the other hand, the drama is entertaining sometimes.
If the rep could be completely reset, I wouldn't be opposed to that. I don't like the idea of it being a popularity contest, but I wouldn't want to get rid of it completely.

There are a half-dozen or more good threads going on AZB right now and some great posts. I haven't made any special effort to pass out rep but I just got the dreaded "too much rep in the last 24 hours" so no rep for Cuebacca.
