I tried this idea a few years back except with the addition of a rigid straight edge (aluminum carpenter's level) and two c-clamps so that I could turn the warped side up and then clamp it to the board so pressure would push it back down. I only tried it on shafts because they are bare wood and would therefore absorb moisture. After experimenting with varying degrees of moisture and clamp-times, I was able to get a few shafts to straighten out. Unfortunately, nothing lasted. Sooner or later, the warps always came back.
So, on a warped butt section I think your odds of success are even slimmer. Sorry.

It may be the influence of the flower child and van pictures(that actually look Waay too clean to be real period archives)-but how bout a big 'chinese finger' sort of thing to encase the end of the butt and hang the whole deal vertically from an I-beam-with like an anvil for a weight. Or not.
As previously stated-what could it hurt.
Johnnyt-what do you think about the authenticity of that picture. The van is not dinged up. and the girl doesn't look all that dingy.
Despite popular recollection-the Haight wasn't always groovy.
Sort of seriously-has anyone had luck with weight and time straightening a butt or shaft hung vertically? Don't they hang cue wood vertically to cure after they start cutting them to dowels?

I don't know what it would do to the finish would probably have to remove it, but I was thinking about building a set up for truing shafts.
You can plasticize wood just the same as they do with steam.
Except you use anahydrous ammonia gas in a sealed chamber pressureized to about 145PSI...for a shaft it would take quite a few hours in the chamber.
Then build some sort of tapered jig that can be clamped around the shaft radially.
The ammonia escapes the woods pores within the day and theres very little spring back. It reacts with the lignen and cell structure letting it move/bend once the ammonia escapes the wood is set.
Pretty neat stuff. I was thinking about building a shaft and bending it in a semi circle lol...that would freak some people out.
That gaseous anahydrous ammonia is pretty dangerous stuff tho lol

There is a real easy fix.... Get yourself a lathe, a piece of BEM, and a piece of ebony ...some duct tape, some 2:1 oil and some ball berings.
carfully remove the pin, joint collar, inlays,wrap, butt capp, rings....then remove the forearm and butt sleeve....with your purchased equipment and wood turn yourself a new forearm and butt sleeve.....re-assemble and enjoy!!!

your cue straightener doesnt stand a chance. that moochi will warp a telephone pole if you strap it on tight enough.
That is funny. A long time ago, I had to tow my broken down Triumph TR7 home from Tennessee on the back of a Ford Torino.
