Seems like yesterday I took 1 1/2 year old Shane to our pool hall, secured iin a cptains chair where he would sit by the hours, not fussing, but, seemingly, mesmerized by the movemrnts of the balls. Aware of his intense interests, at Christmass I bought him a 2' X 4' pool table and in the process opening his gifts he spotted the table, dropped his toys, took the cue in hand and took a stance at the table that was near perfect, including the bridge (with no help)
I knew Shane had all natural instincts it takes to make a good pool player as I had recognized in his mother ,Timi Bloomberg and his aunt,Gari Jo Bloomberg, also at a very young age. Both girls have championship titles in state, national, and international levels'.I knew he would be a great student.
Teaching was a joy as he grasped everything I taught him with ease and was loving it. By the time Shane was 5-6 years old I had him shooting trick shot shows with me where loved to show his skils. We took him to a couple BCA trade shows where he chalenged and played several
Greats (Mike Massey,Tom Kennedy,Mike Siegel, and others ) When Mike siegel
Played him,he was so impressed he took Shane over to Danny Janes and told Danny," If I were you I would hwve this little boy playing with one of my cues now so when he becomes world champion you can say he got there with a Joss cue". It's Amazing Mike has that ability to recognize that in a youngster
as he has. Danny did make him a beautifull cue with points that spell Shane. By the way, its still his basic cue.
From there it was leagues and competitive pool where emotions enters into your game. I remember one occasion when Shane was about 10,losing a match then slipping into a nearby where I found him slightly sobbing and I remember telling him "Its easy for a man to handle winning but a REAL MAN to learn how handle losing. He learned well.
Working with Shane over the years on patterns, banking, focusing, ect, has been such a joy as it was with my girls, who I also started playing at a young age. The gratification comes with watching him mature and going on to win top honors in the state,VNEA, and then recently ,as a pro, playing in the finals in three major touneys,(Enjoy pool, the summit, and winnig the 10 ball in Florida) To win the US Open WOW. I'm ,oh, so proud of Shane for what he has achieved but equally as proud of the way he conducts himself on and away from the arena. The way my knwledge has been displayed by my offspring is the most rewarding thing I could ever hope for.
Shane a Champion, OH Yes, BIG TIME

Shane's stock has risen thru the proverbial roof. Who could root against such a talented cueist and an overall wonderful representative of our great sport? He has earned legions of fans from his exploits so far in 2007.
What a great time for him to be peaking...just in time for the World 9 Ball Championship!
He is wished all the best, on and off the table.

Your post warms my heart. You must be so proud, and rightfully so.

I had posted these blurry pictures previously on this forum, but I thought you may enjoy seeing them in this thread.

It's a family affair, folks, and the pool world is that much brighter, with Shane Van Boening. He comes from good stock! :)

Here's the first pic. :p

Shane's ready to conquer the world, if not the world championship, which will probably come his way at some point.

I recall watching a late teen gambling with established stars of the game in the late summer of 1971. One of the local pros explained to me that I shouldn't confuse youth for inexperience. The teenager, he explained, was already a very experienced player. As it turns out, I was watching future World Champion Allen Hopkins.

Shane makes me think of Allen in that, despite his youth, he has to be considered a very expereinced competitor with enough seasning to beat anybody.

Is Shane sponsored yet?,if not im sure he has alot of offers coming his way.;)

BCA League recognized Shane as a champion earlier this year, and he is sponsored by the BCA League, one of many more to come I'm sure.

Shane is truly an American thoroughbred champion, and the best is yet to come. I'm predicting a good showing at the WPC. Watch out world, Shane Van Boening is here. If American pool ever needed a boost, Shane Van Boening is the shot in the arm it has needed for ever so long.

I can't wait until next week for the WPC! This is exciting! :p

You should be proud Gary. Shane is a fine young man as well as a great pool player.

Lol

Gary ... Thanks for posting, and I am sure you are proud, I know I would be.
It is all the more gratifying that he comes from a multi-generational family
that loves Pool, and treats it like a sport, and not just a game.

Shane behaves as a Pro in all respects, and is getting all of us excited. I hope he just carries this tide with him all the way through the WPC, I will be rooting for him.

How come you didn't mention 'Grandma's shooting'? Boy, you're in trouble.. :D

We are proud to have him grow in front and with us. Our pride must be a mere drop, compared to the OCEAN you deservedly swim in! Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Congrats, SVB!

I had the pleasure of meeting Shane two years ago at the Super Billiards Expo, you could tell then by his talent & demeanor that this young man was a future World Champion. Congrats to him and to you to Grandpa, well deserved!

I have said this before and I will again. I remember when Shane was about 6 years old he was playing in the South Dakota State 8 ball tourney and walking through the division he was playing in he eventually got beat and he treated his loss with as much respect as his wins. I thought to myself then that this kid would be great. Recently we held our state 9 ball tourney and Shane was there playing some exibition games and he was fun to watch the way he interacted with his fans. It was then I relized that Timi, Gari jo and Gary Bloomberg did not just raise a champion pool player they raised a hell of a man as well.

May you and your family enjoy continued triumphs. On and off the felt.

Chad

Ps Tell Timi to dust her cues off and get back to the game. We miss her.

I was at the Open all week watching Shane play and I can tell you that this is no "ONE & DONE" Fluke...... this Monster is the future of Pool.

My wife Jeanne, passed away in 94 and we all miss her very much. Jeanne and I never went anywhere without Shane and Jeanne had a very special
relashionship with Shane,he loved her very much as she did him. Her passing was a very emotional period in Shanes young life.
Jeanne was no youngster when I introduced her to the game of pool but, also, was a good student. Good enough to win the state tounament the
first year she entered it. She played along side her daughters in the team events winning title after titles and even competeing against them and on one occasion declared, "I'm getting damn tired of those brats knocking me out of the tourneys all the time "LOL. She being missed by us very much and by all that knew her. Gary B

This is a great story and a fun read. Thanks for sharing. You have a lot to be proud of with that kind of talent running through the bloodlines.

One of my friends was talking with Shane at Q masters after the tournament. My friend asks Shane what he was going to do do with all that money! Get a new car? Shane said ... I already have a good car! Down payment on a house? Shane said.... I already have a home! Well take your self a nice vacation? Shane said .... guys I'm on vacation right now and I can't wait to get home and start practicing!!
All I could do is smile. If there ever was a role model for young pool players SVB is it. I was there all week watching the us open. Shane is the guy I am pulling for. Congrads to the whole family!! You guys deserve it!!
