I have a lot of problems with my lower back, and especially my sciatica. I have a lot of pain in my right leg, and went to a masseur and a chiropractor, both gave up because it only helped shortly. I am eating a lot of painkillers just to walk. I am going to my doctor again tuesday.

Maybe it is the way I stand in pool, but I don't know, I hope not.... But I was playing pool every day untill it began to hurt.

I was wondering, has anyone else here had this kind of problems?

What did you do to get it fixed? or any suggestions I should bring to my doctor?

You ought to try working out. maybe the muscles are just getting weak.

try working your abs too. weak abs can also lead to back pain.

Well, I didn't have sciatica but I would get back pain from playing too much so I decided to start weight training. I don't have a physical job so I needed the exercise anyways!!! I've been doing it for about 7 months and the results have been very positive. I don't have back pain and feel more stable in my stance, to go along with the other health benefits.

At the minimum you need to improve your lower back, hamstrings, and stomach muscles. You can do this by doing stiff legged deadlifts, squats, and various ab exercises like leg raises, crunches, and side bends. You can go to www.bodybuilding.com for more info. You'll probably have to minimize playing until you get healed up before you start getting into it, just remember to start slowly and be consistent.

Good luck,

Eric

I have a bar across the top one of my doorways. When I have that problem I just hang from it for a few minutes and take 800mg Motren. I works for me for half a day or more. But please get an x-ray done 1st and ask your doctor if it will help or injure it more. Johnnyt

Take it from me who had severe sciatica down my right leg to the point where I was gonna quit pool---- get an MRI, find out which disc is pinching the nerve---- and go into surgery to get it fixed. Forget the chiropractors, forget the exercises, forget the stretching - forget all of that --- none of it works like hacking out the chuck that's causing the problem.

AND--- another thing.... follow your doctor's instructions. Don't drive, DON'T play pool, don't do anything he tells you not to do--- otherwise, you'll be like me and have to fade 2 surgeries instead of 1. I was playing pool 3 days after surgery because I "felt ok." HA - bad move.

Here's a tip. If you have a thick wallet, don't keep it in your back pocket and sit on it all day (driving too).

try to find out what is wrong

Good advice to try to find out what is wrong. Unless there is a clearly shown mechanical issue, not one that is guessed at, don't do surgery. Also don't start pumping iron just yet!

I suggest to start by walking and build up from there. You probably have somebody in your circle of family and friends that knows a physical therapist. Locating the gentle stretches and exercises to work on your back might help. Barring finding a mechanical problem JohnnyT's idea of stretching by hanging is probably good too.

I may have surgery in Sept. I have three discs fusing together. Painful isn't the word. I'm 42 and in the gym four days a week, normally. 210, 34 waist, let's just say I was in great shape for my age. Anyway, this legs going numb and not being able to roll over in bed without tearing up is killing my body and pool game for sure. DO NOT try to lift weights until you get checked out. You can do some real damage. Pray and take it slow. Best of Luck from Crawdaddy.

Sciatica Nerve Problem

SpiderWebComm hit the nail on the head!, no amount of exercise will help, if anything make it worse.

I'm no doctor, but heres what mine told me when I had my severe sciatic nerve problems down my left leg. Without an MRI, he told me in his office that I either had, pinched nerve which was unlikely because of severity of pain,a herniated disc, or a ruptured disc, but I needed an MRI to confirm. In my case I had a ruptured disc, L5 lower back.

If it had of been a pinched nerve, a chiropractor may have helped, a herniated disc requires removal because it just keeps pressing against the sciatic nerve.

A ruptured disc calls for removal most of the time also, but if you can stand the pain 24/7 for about 6 months, and only getting about 2 hours sleep a night, and eating hydrcodone pills like M&M's, it will finally quit hurting in some cases, because the fluid like substance leaking out of the disc will eventually be absorbed by your body( kinda like a toothpaste substance).

After 5 months I couldn't stand it any longer, I couldn't stand for over 1 minute, sit on toilet over a minute, or even lie down, so you can say I had to do something.

Playing pool or working was outta the question, the pain had gotten so great.

I had my L5 disc removed, I was so sore after the operation for about a week, just barely could walk, but with therapy I recoved quite nicely, I was playing pool after 3 weeks, and won a tournament.

That was 9 years ago, my back really bothered me for 5 years after surgery, but now I don't have any pain at all, and no longer require hydrocone for pain.

I know this sounds gloomy, but after some time it will get better.

You need to most likely see a doctor and get an MRI.

This is the best advice. I have had unbelievable back problems. It'll go out for no reason and I won't be able to walk at all.

I started walking with my wife and then running again. I'm starting to exercise again regularly and it is helping tremendously...

Also, get a memory foam mattress. It's been the best thing for my back.

It was my L5-S1 disc as well. It's a very crucial disc and the nerves that come out of there affect a LOT of stuff - so the MRI is the best move. I almost needed a cane before my surgery - no kidding. Today, my back is about 90% what it once was. It will never be 100% but it's WAY better than limping. Sciatic pain feel like someone is giving you a hard "dead-leg" punch repeatedly behind your leg. It never goes away unless you get the source of the problem fixed.

I can only speak for me--- but the chiros and stretching was a complete waste of time. It didn't help, made it hurt more - and prolonged the time it took for me to pull the trigger to fix the prob with surgery. If you wait too long to get surgery (assuming you need it), you can get nerve damage like me (because the nerve is compressed for SO long, it begins to die). You don't want that... see spine surgeon / ortho asap and get an MRI. Sciatica isn't something to F with.

I had a herniated disk a few years ago and it hurt like hell. I almost never go to the hospital, but I had to go at 4:30 in the morning, cause the constant pain. Nothing helped with the shooting pain. I was in the hospital for about 5-6 days and they were going to perform surgery. They had me hooked up to an iv and were pumping me full of Dilaudid. They gave me a cortisone shot and that helped and I never ended up having surgery.

Had a back op, but previous to that, I know the pain you're going thru.
It doesn't take much to pinch a nerve and start the pain all over again.
Take it easy on the pain killers bud.
My L5 is paper thin and still have the odd bout with sciatica.
The only thing that I can suggest as interim relief is buy a good personal back massager, something like Home Medic. You can get them at Wally World. My wife is a nurse and I get her to give me a working over with the massager before bed. In the morning, I still have pain but at least its a serious improvement. Bending over to make a shot can set it off. I pinched the sciatic nerve a couple of weeks ago by leaning over the bathroom sink.
Good Luck.

Here's a tip. If you have a thick wallet, don't keep it in your back pocket and sit on it all day (driving too).

That can definitely cause problems...big thick wallet throws your posture off bad. The hanging stretching is good, and definitely light exercise, especially swimming since there is no jarring and pounding, its basically one ling stretch exercise

When I was on the distance team in college, I had some injures and such in my back, butt and legs and audited a water aerobics class and it helped in the rehab very much.

But the most important thing is to definitely keep up with your doctor, and an MRI isn't a bad idea...you never can be careful enough when it comes to your health. Not to throw fears around but things like cancer such are known to cause types of pain. So just keep trying to get down to the bottom of it and I'm sure you will find the root of the problem.

It might even be something as simple as inflammation that with a little ultrasound can be fixed...that worked great on my back pain...I had pinched nerves under my shoulder blade and it was unbearable and was the only thing that helped me

I have the same problem and the only thing that helped me was physical therapy at a pilates studio. It took several months, but the pain is virtually nonexistent now. I found that massage actually made it worse and the chiropractor only provided temporary relief. If you can find a real, professional pilates physical therapist, I would highly recommend that you check it out.

I had the same problem and i bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress and 90% of my back pain went away.

In my case, chropractor improved my back after about 10-12 visits and I can finally walk and exercise again. But I personally feel swimming really helps it big time. I can still feel the pain, pinch, numbness few times a day especially when I was driving or play pool for a while, but figured the recovery takes long time and I just have to be careful and patient.

Surgery is needed if your MRI reslut indicates that, but not everyone who has sciatica need a surgery. Daily exercise is essential when comes to a healthy body.
