Scott Frost bitten by black widow

I wouldn't have waited so long to get medical attention

I'm pretty sure that the person in the photo was getting treated for the bite. There's no real effective way to treat a brown recluse bite, or no invasive measures that can be taken until the infection and necrosis has taken its course far enough. The necrosis can't be actively handled, but the infection can with antibiotics and medications along that line.

Tee Tree Oil is very effective for treating and neutralizing ALL spider bites. I keep 4 or 5 bottles at all times.

ps - I heard earlier on TAR that Scott was on anti-biotics and was still very uncomfortable.

Sorry --- I hope he recovers soon. I was bit by one several years ago --- felt lousy for a couple days. Doc said if you don't have an allergic reaction or get an infection there was not much he needed to do for me. Black widow bites are a hazard when living on the desert. Years ago (before the bug man visited monthly to spray for the critters), we checked our shoes and shook out our clothes before dressing - lots of scorpions too. One early morning before we were really awake, my mom served me a scorpion in my eggs.

For those who do not know what MRSA is here is a Link that explains what it is. Other half is a Nurse, and she say MRSA is a very bad thing to have. Only 1 or 2 Antibiotics can treat it.

How do you get MRSA from a spider bite?

I do not think you are going to get any takers on that bet, but I would guess the E.R. & Hospital will do everything in their power to collect the bill for service.

Well since the MRSA was probably from the hospital he may have a payday coming.

These can!

Most spiders, something like 90-95% of them, can't bite hard enough to break the skin. Those other few spiders are some busy little bassets ain't they? :D

This is the Australian Funnel Spider. They can Kill a dog in an hour. Tea Tree Oil comes from Australia. They also keep it handy!

Thank You Jay! It's so easy to get side tracked some times.

I will also be adding Scott Frost to my prayer list.

Scott, I wish you a speedy recovery. Do everything the Doc's tell you.

I spent a week in an Idaho hospital after a spider bite. It got me in my sleep. Spiders carry staph. The normal stuff is bad enough.

Whoa, that is about the size of it. They are nasty, real nasty. Was that your hand PJ? If so, God bless you man, that had to suck.

Just a pic I found on the web, but thanks for the empathy anyway.

My Central American friend was bitten on the ankle, and it looked like this (open deep wound with dead tissue around it), but not nearly as bad. Still, it took days of the doctor snipping dead tissue away before it stopped spreading and she could start healing over.

Didn't seem to be any way they could treat it except try to stay ahead of the spreading necritis (if that's the word). Maybe if she'd been able to get to a US hospital right away...

Hope this isn't what Frost got.

Some good links for those who worry...

Leave it to a referee to break it down and be picky about details <sigh>...

Just a little sensitive to the issue being from OK too (host to all of these nasties), so here are some good links for anyone who wishes to sort it out. This is not meant in any way to be the end-all be-all post - just a few tips.

Note the distribution in the maps in this link - sevral nasty six-eyed varieties in desert southwest, but not the actual "brown recluse" (not that it matters to anyone who gets chomped by one of the others).

http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol5num2/special/recluse.html

There is a six-eyed Chilean variety that has a particulary nasty and aggressive temperament - fortunately not a problem in the U.S., but if you're playing a tourney in Santiago then beware.

ALL true spiders have spinerettes and produce silk and webs - that's part of what makes them spiders. Some just dont use them to routinely trap prey. The recluses nest and reproduce in web lined lairs. Note the non-chemical control suggestions here:

http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2061.html

Myths abound about the "long legs" varieties - some spiders, some not. None of them very impressive. Nice concise info here:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Are_grand_daddy_long_legs_poisonous

Good info on the Black Widows posted already. They are VERY real and VERY nasty in the short term if bitten but generally not fatal as already noted. I have done away with two of them nesting in the eaves of my house in the last few years. They are definitely not afraid of heights (LOL & shudder). And they are much more widespread than the recluses - basically nationwide and southern Canada. Info here:

http://kaston.transy.edu/widow.html

Being a long time camper I can attest to the advice given to Daniel Stern by the old man in The Milagro Beanfield War - "Don't let your testicles hang to low in the outhouse - black widows." (Sorry - was that too graphic?!?). They LOVE trash, rot and sewage.

Of course NONE of this makes a rat to Scott right now - best hopes and prayers for him...(refs have a heart too!)

Not sure if anyone has posted a current update but I spoke to Scott tonight. Said he is doing better. The anti-biotics are making him sick and he was to take more tonight. The doc keeps reopening the wound to try to keep it clean and all the crap out of it. He hopes to maybe be able to go home tomorrow. Says either way, he feels like crap.

Mike

Thanks!

Mike,

Thanks a bunch for the update. Sounds like things are progressing very well considering the possibilities. Massive doses of antibiotics almost always make you feel nasty, not much help for that.

So did he get nailed by a spider, contract a staph infection (MRSA), or both?

Man, rest up good and feel better soon, Scott.

AFAIK, no such spider by that name exists. I'm thinking someone thought "black" widow wasn't PC and tried to proclaim a new name for it...
Sorry to hear this...but yes, there are Black Widow spiders..we have them here in Oklahoma also....ugly for sure
I was saying there's no such thing as an African American Black Widow spider. Of course I know Black Widow spiders are real! But there's no such thing as an "African American" Black Widow spider.

I just got back from the hospital, brought Scott some pizza and ice cream,he was happy to eat something good.He is doing much better and is in good spirits and should be out later today. He was disappointed about not being able to play in the Reno tourney but is looking forward to hitting some balls and getting ready for the next tournament.
