Scuttlebutt in Wyoming

You a funny man!

Unfortunately, that was not the only sharking Charlie did during the tournament - nor the favoritism towards him from the tournament director. The match to get to the money round, Charlie was playing a local CO player that plays pretty good bar table 8-ball but has a reputation of playing slow. He had Charlie 3-0 and was playing very well so Charlie stopped the game to talk to the "tournament director" about his slow play. They put the match on the clock. Charlie than slowed to a crawl from what I was told by more than one person, including his opponent, but although they had them on the clock, Charlie was never penalized.

For someone with Charlie's stature as promoter, "Union" leader, whatever, he sure lives by a double standard. Bad form Charlie.

Dave

i watched that match.the next shot cw took after they were put on the clock took 1 min and 6 sec.it was timed by a lady sitting there.nothing said.in his match with ace brown he pulled his sharking tactics again and this time it was a rule inter.so he didnt win.lost the game as well

And this is why Mike Zuglan does it right and should be commended.
He'd rather get drilled 9-0 and be out of the tournament than risk his reputation and integrity.

Ain't that the truth. Mike Zuglan doesn't give anyone favoritism. I have always admired that about him. Even the almighty Efren Reyes would be forfeited if he came late to the table. Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour has a level playing field for sure!

What's surprising, if accurate, this action could Hurt their event in the long run, unless the demographics in WY have no concern for quality of play in the finals/semifinals.
If true, hopefully these actions will not influence Mosconi Points and will be taken into consideration when picking our USA Team next yr, if it does, it speaks for itself. Matchroom sports tho, seems to have an eye on matters, this could make it easier for them to choose someone with integrity, when that time comes. As far as traveling expenses, they all probably broke even with this action.

Thanks for the additional details. There was a lot of whining & complaining about Charlie Sunday after many people came back from the tourney. There was talk that some will not play in that event again, but we'll see.

This is why the Turning Stone event is the only pro event I play in. Every year in December I lumber up to upstate NY to see the family and play in the TS. Mike's events are as professional as they get and I make sure to shake his hand and thank him everytime I get knocked out. He doesnt need to hear it but Im sure he really appreciates it ;)

If this is accurate and really did happen, it seems like the players are just thumbing their nose at proper behavior.

Unbelievable!!!

This event will go away if they continue.

The rules MUST be the same for everyone - no favorites.

Zuglan gets it right - and I like to think we do too!

This kind of crap really gets my blood flowing - and is just another nail in the coffin of American Professional Pool.

If I was a top player, I would distance myself from any & all people with this pattern. Seems like a lot of them are the movers and shakers of the ABP.

BTW - Mr. Globe (whom I have never met) is also the UPA league operator for the area. I do not know if there is a relationship here between Dragon and UPA. But if I was UPA or Mr. Globe, I would sure (publicly) distance myself from this type of behavior.

This stuff makes everyone in pool look bad.
When are people going to wake up????

I agree with you, Mark. Thank goodness for promoters like you and Zuglan. There's a few others out there too. I know Allen Hopkins is also fair.

From what I understand -- again, hearsay -- Rodney, Amar, Charlie, and Raj had their hotel rooms and entry fees paid for at this event. It sure does seem like an unlevel playing field for the rest of the "schmucks" that have to pay their own way.

Charlie Williams taking a verbal shot at Mark Haddad, racing for the 3rd place in this tournament, if it did happen, makes sense. Mark was the only one at this juncture who could hurt him. Charlie was backed up by his whole crew against Mark.

And Mark did call Charlie out, alone, instead of having Charlie address Mark with his gang. Mark was out-numbered, and he knew it, but he thought in his heart of hearts, he had been wronged at this tournament.

It's a pretty nice payday for Charlie, et al. No expenses and a free ride.

I heard, again, hearsay, that Mark thinks Charlie deliberately, with malice aforethought, sharked him when Charlie was down 5 to 2. Mark believes, again, hearsay, that Charlie went to college for psychology, and that this was a ploy used by him to get into his head.

That said, a good pool player should be able to overcome sharks and ploys, but as an ABP member, Charlie Williams shouldn't have to reduce himself to these tactics, if, in fact, this is what happened. :p

Mark is not a poster boy when it comes to sharking either. While he has settled down some in recent years, he used to be brutal.

I am sorry that Charlie ended up beating him. That kind of BS should have some karma coming somewhere along the way.

I know Mark, and he is not without warts and flaws. The thing is, though, that Charlie was pissed off that Mark had him down 5 to 2, and so he not only sharked him -- again, hearsay -- but he pulled a class rank on him. Since Charlie was one of the paid entries by the promoter, I guess he felt he could throw his weight around and make it tough on Mark. This shouldn't be allowed. Charlie should have to compete on the same level playing field as Mark.

Aside from all the chop-chop, this is what is the most upsetting. Here Mark is, paid his own way to come to this event, competing against the four Chop-Chop boys who got their expenses paid, and then he gets ruled against by the promoter and told he is not welcome back to this event. Mark was winning, 5 to 2, against Charlie when all this happened.

Something seems wrong here. Same crap used to happen with the UPA.

Smells like fish, wonder if the casino boys were bettin' on the matches, you think that's a possibility ???????????:wink2:

I find it hard to believe that CW called for the clock on someone....
..that's like Jeffrey Dahmer accusing somebody of bad table manners.:scratchhead:

pt..<..who started a "Charlie Williams is so slow" thread

It should suprise you, from the perspective of a reasonable individual.

From the perspective of Chaaah-lie...an egotistical, self-serving, greedy sociopath...does it really surprise?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder#Psychopathy_and_sociopathy
Sociopath:
-sociopaths have relatively normal temperaments; their personality disorder being more an effect of negative sociological factors like parental neglect, delinquent peers, poverty, and extremely low or extremely high intelligence. In other words, psychopathy leans towards the hereditary whereas sociopathy tends towards the environmental

Charlie is going to run across somebody one of these days who has a worse temper than Corey Deuel.

You can't keep treating people this way forever and get away with it.

It's amazing, with every bit of new information that comes to light, I like him a little less.

I smiled when I heard that too! Charlie calling for a clock on someone ...but if he didn't, he may not have made it into the money round.

Ok, let me see if I've got this straight..

At the least, CW(maybe more) got paid entries. CW's little gang got to call the rules and the shots. CW's gang got most of the top money, which they split amongst themselves. After his tantrum, CW got the hall owner to tell Mark that he's no longer welcome.

Something smells bad on this one. I'm guessing some kind of kick-back to the owner or whoever added the money.. Put on a tournament, showcase himself, showcase 'his players', split the money and go home. Sounds like one big promotional event.

I fully agree with you, Troop, he's gonna try pulling this crap on somebody that will either, a) not put up with it immediately, or b) get him back. And I don't think there's gonna be anybody out there feeling bad about it.

I was really hoping a pool player would've been the sole winner or that huge mega millions jackpot. Then they start their own tour to compete with dragon promotions. Hell I would've thrown the biggest tournament that pool has ever seen if I would've won it

A fair percentage of pool fans/railbirds bet on the outcome of two players on a ppv. We all know that choping or spliting will happen sometimes. If I thought there was a chance that two players were doing a split on a ppv i'd NEVER buy it. I believe there are a lot more fans out there that would do the same. It's bad for tournaments and all the ppv's. Johnnyt

Mark -

How are you going to stop it from happening? As a tournament promoter/owner - are you going to bar people that chop? Are you going to bar people that dump? Are you going to distance yourself from this behavior and not let these players play in your events?
