Self policing the forum-Good or bad?

And then, after all the years I've been here I make a mistake in the for sale section. I bumped a sale up a little early and you gave me one of your polite warnings. Along with the only red feedback I've ever had. How polite of you.

Please stop posting in your thread. It is against the rules and just plain rude. Please have some courtesy for the other members.

Can you post a copy of one of your warning emails so we can judge the tone?

HERE'S YOUR ANSWER.

Originaly posted by Pulzcul:
"And then, after all the years I've been here I make a mistake in the for sale section. I bumped a sale up a little early
and you gave me one of your polite warnings. Along with the only red feedback I've ever had. How polite of you."

Seeing as the above is what you did which is way different than you how you represented yourself, then the response you wrote about here-----> "Occasionally when I send someone that polite pm, I'm greeted with a reply filled with profanity and insults"... Is not surprising.

This is a perfect example as to why my answer to your question is absolutely not, to policing.

Why is is so hard for some of you to see that I'm only trying to help. You guys act as though I'm trying to make trouble. Just because you don't give a shit about anyone other than yourself, don't think I don't.

- Appointing yourself voluntary hall monitor - Dork Level 1

- Posting a thread hoping for support of unwanted dorkery - Dork Level 3

- After not receiving expected support, assume other people don't understand, and are basically selfish *****s, unlike your awesome self - Dork Level 5 super combo Boss secret level.

Given that you contact people by PM and are even remotely surprised by their profanity laced replies, and again you were surprised that you did not receive support in this thread for your self-policing idea, it appears the person who doesn't quite understand, is you.

But, keep patting yourself on the back thinking you are making the world a better place if you like. Knock yourself out :D

who wants to bet $1.00, that at least 10 posters herein, can hit the report button (or PM) - and get this moved to NPR, @ <10 minutes?

Policing is not the right word when you don't have authority, or the means to enforce.

Kind of like, I can't police a real-life neighborhood if I had no badge, no gun, no cuffs,
and I couldn't even punch someone.
All I could do is yell "HEY YOU KIDS GET AWAY FROM THERE!!!!"

That might frighten off some timid types, but it's not going to stop a fistfight.
To police the forums you need the power to ban or otherwise punish people.

Reminding them of the rules is helpful, and being a good forum citizen,
but you can kind of tell when someone is just a natural-born asshоle
and is going to eventually mouth off one time too many.
I don't waste time on those types.

The types worth addressing are the ones who are obviously new
to forum culture and maybe the internet in general.
A little guidance and experience, and they figure out what's
accepted and what's not.

I don't know where you got your info about the report function,
but afaik it works fine. Wilson has responded to a couple of my reports
and made references to people's reports. He wouldn't be aware of them,
if he didn't monitor them at least occasionally.

I agree that if he's only gonna spend 15 minutes a day on here
(and most of that in the funny picture thread) then we should have someone
who has the time and inclination help.

You've got action :)

Why am I the Colonel? Because I always get the chicken

As some of you know, along with a lot of others here, I have taken the approach of trying to self police the forum. Obvioulsy, we are not Mods but when we see a rules violation we step up and let people know that they have not followed the rules. Usually it's new members that haven't bothered to actually read the rules so a polite pm with a link to the rules (highlighting the rule that is applicable) is uaually all it takes for them and they understand. Usually they reply and apologize and everything is good from then on.

Other times, it's not so simple. Occasionally when I send someone that polite pm, I'm greeted with a reply filled with profanity and insults. I'm always amused by this as if I'm the one breaking the rules and being discourteous to the other members. It's funny, the last several times I've received this response, the new member ends up getting banned shortly there after. Lol!

When it's a long standing member it's a different animal entirely. They certainly don't want to admit they are being rude and ignoring the rules even if they are. Instead they try and turn the tables and act like we are the one's doing something wrong by pointing it out. Sorry, but that redirection doesn't work with me. Just buck up and admit you made a mistake and/or if you are continually ignoring the rules why not try to be a little more courteous to your fellow members and just follow the rules. While it's not as serious here on an internet forum, in civilized society the people who break the rules are called criminals. Why is it we shouldn't expect our members to act civilized here?

Anyway, recently I have had the opportunity to learn that the "report post" link at the bottom of the page does...... NOTHING. It doesn't go to a moderator but instead it goes to a generic mailbox that is not monitored. Additionally, one of the mods informed me he has "less than 10 minutes a day" to police the forums.

So with that in mind I ask you, isn't it our responsibility to self police the forum if we want it to run smoothly. The reason I'm asking is because recently there have been a lot of members acting like they are above the rules and obviously without moderation this will continue. If we want to keep this forum running smoothly I believe it's up to everyone to let people know when they have done something wrong. That being said, I don't think everyone should bombard a member because they violated the rules once. Of course people make mistakes and bump in the WFS section a little early. I'm referring to the members where this has become a pattern and who continually ignore the rules or to help a new member out by informing them of the rules in case they didn't read them.

And before you hit that reply button please try and remember that the rules are in place for a reason. The forum would be chaos without them.

Please reply with your opinion.

Random question and forgive me if it's already been asked but...

If people are already blatantly disregarding the rules AND the mods who set and enforce them, what makes you think anyone will listen to you???

B <----------- thinks this thread is hilarious.

Monstermash....it has to be your approach...presentation style......that
keeps your thread from being fairly discussed or debated. I've tried and
just pissed people off.....and understandably it was for good reasons becuz
I know I can come across as if this was my Forum which it isn't.....I'm just a
guest here as is everyone else. And I slap back when hit which doesn't help.

Our memberships have a symbiotic relationship with this Forum. We see the
Forum in a variety of ways based upon the way we choose to, or prefer to, use
it. The Forum is designed for us...people like us....but make no mistake about it.
We are the very reason why the Forum even exists.......Think of it this way......
The Remora Fish gets a ride on the shark but doesn't get to steer it or tell it which
way to head......we have to remember to always enjoy the ride.....thank goodness.

Instead of battling out why the wanted/sale section rules should be followed or not
followed....or kicking sand in each other's faces with barbs because we disagree
....... the last post by such & such can't go unanswered....I mean he got really
personal with his insults ....blah...blah...blah...blah...no one likes to lose an argument.

So maybe we should convert this thread into some discussion...any discussion...about
what would work better. Heck, start a new thread and direct our energy and efforts into
something that stands a chance because right now this Forum is absolutely in gridlock
and it's reminiscent of our legislators in Washington, D.C. And we consider those folks
clowns and untruthful so imagine how we must look to others....nothing changes until we do.

How about we start some posts on this thread right now.....I mean there was a post by Kevin
Brown that I thought was a bullseye and I was going to post that and then thought to myself,
"Wait a minute....that's the guy who...". WHY does it always have to become personal?
So he and I disagree on some things....strongly....OK...vociferously then......but he could still
be the greatest guy in the world to call your friend if you ever had the opportunity.

I have absolutely no beef with KB but right away in the back of my mind I remembered
"Gee, I don't care for that guy." WHY? Because he told me where to stick it....called me
out...made me look foolish.....or maybe I got the best of him so that's why he pissed at me?
Does it really matter? OMG.....is the Forum morphing into the equivalent of the "Hatfields and
the McCoys"? You insulted my great grand pappy 30 years ago and we ain't forgot since...???

Okay then....let's start reading some posts on what works...or what could work....not why it won't.
If the last post doesn't quite cut it and falls short of the target, don't knock it or criticize it won't work.
Type a few sentences outlining what's needed in order to help make it work......re-draw the shape
and tell us what it should look like.....what it takes to make the idea more palatable & attainable?

Matt B.

Im your daisy

I worked with or on people for years and never had one person complain ..
I think I would make a great self appointed moderator.
As long I am aloud to kill everyone who i think would complain I don't see any problems.

I work nights and holidays

You asked if people thought it was good or bad. Don't get mad when people answer your question just because you don't agree with their answer.

He has a hard time accepting that other people may not agree with him.
You should check out his oh-so mature photography thread in the gallery.

- Dork Level 5 super combo Boss secret level.

And THAT, my man, is some deep dorkism.

To quote Raylan Givens "If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole."

Ok, several things here..

I'm calling you straight out to name who exactly said they have less than 10 min a day to do anything here...

Add to that the report buttons work just fine, so who and what have you reported that went to a mailbox that is unattended?

I answer dozens of messages and emails from here on any given day myself. Who knows what Mike and Jerry do on their side?

The people who want to make a friendly reminder to people who are breaking rules are fine, but if you think you've got the ground to insist on some enforcement, you need to check yourself.

As mentioned, a simple PM will bring it to specific people's attention.

If you think for a second that buying memberships get you anything other than more PM space and sig...you again are mistaken. I ban people regardless of their paid membership nearly every day.
What else should I add?

Rules are great and put in place for a reason, but you are way to uptight and come across poorly. This is not supposed to be work, it's supposed to be fun.

How do I find that? Haven't been in the gallery.

Cue and Case Gallery.
It's a sticky at the top of the page.

He offers advise on how to take great pics of cues. When a few people say "No offense but those pics aren't that great" he gets immaturely defensive.

"don't p1ss off Wilson"

Probably not that more than 20% of AZB particpants will absorb this.

I co-owned and managed 9 commercial "public" websites for years. Most with message boards and/or live chat. I could not get insurance to protect against exposure from hackers, predators, minors, indecency and violence.

I WAS the firewall. It was a MF'g task. The effort spent behind the scene was FAR more than what was "public". The PM's, the emails, the time and the phone calls???

I had volunteer undercover particpants to keep a pulse. I had 8 moderators that I gave graduated software authorizition (to ban, etc), and had weekly live private electronic open meetings with all the mods.

It's not as easy as some may think keeping track of every written, often subjective message.

AZ does a helluva job.
