serious pool players.....

Here is one of my own little tests that would sort out those who have potential from those who were just worker bees looking for an angle, a free ride, or what they perceived as an easy living. A potential student would come to me and say they wanted to study with me because they heard I knew much about the psychopath and many of my students had done well in life.

At that point I could not tell a good potential student from a fraud so I would give them four books on the psychopath and tell them to stop back in two weeks and we could talk about it. Some never came back. Of those who did I would ask, “So tell me, what you thought of chapter three in book two with regard to the neurophysiology of the psychopath?” Seemed to sort a lot of people out when they had to read, study, and understand all four books not knowing which one I would want to talk about. You see it doesn’t take a lot to sort out the wheat from the chaff – and of course the testing of your mettle goes on for years so dedication and a true commitment are required.

Those who have succeeded in life know what it takes to succeed in their area of expertise and they look for it in others whom they decide to “take under their wing.” Study those whom you wish to be like and emulate them to the extent they have the qualities that will help you to succeed.

You may not be able to fake it, but it is not all that difficult to find a mentor if that is what you truly seek.

Hu and GreyGhost are right on point . If you're a 'great player' , there's always money to be made off bangers . Take part of that $1200 stake and spend it on a used station wagon or minivan , so you'll always have a roof over your head . Then get out there and do it . You'll either make it , or you won't . If you don't make it , you can always sell the car , and head on down to the Marine recruiter . They'll make a man out of you , instead of the whiny little boy I hear in your post .
By the way , if you decide not to go on the road cuz you're ascared . . .
When you don't have a job , your job is to find a job . 8 hours a day , five days a week - if the HR guys are in their office , you need to be in their offices ! Thats IRL , not on the computer ! You can stay up all night doing online apps ! The ones that say apply in person are the ones that have actual jobs !

Put a twenty dollar bill in your pocket. Put a five in another pocket for cheap food or a soda water, beer, smokes, decent food, luxuries comes out of that twenty dollar stake. Go to the pool hall, bars, anywhere you want to play and gamble with that twenty dollars. If you make money put it on the side and start the next day with $20 again. Do that for six months or a year, seven days a week. You will know how to win at the end of that time and that is what pool is about, finding a way to win. Doesn't really matter who the better player is over the course of months or years, you only have to outplay or out maneuver them while you are playing the person.

Oh yeah one other thing, after the first 30 days leave the five at home. Go out to conquer the world everyday starting on a twenty dollar bill. Sleep 'til noon, you don't have to get active until the late afternoon or evening. Call it a night when you can't find any action anywhere around you.

Have fun, all BS aside remember you are living your dream. Of course you might be quoting Earthquake in a few months. . . .

You don't really need any other single individual to help you, you just need to stick your toes in the fire and see what kind of steel you are made of.

Hu

Spoken with the certainty of one that has been there, great post Hu.....

And so true, he will see if he has any steel.....

...............
seems like some guys watchin too many hustler-movies.......
A lazy man without discipline could never be a professional billiards player who s able to live from it!

If you want to get noticed here's what you do:

Get a video cam, go to a pool hall with a perfect table (GC/Diamond). Videotape yourself beating Willie Mosconi's 526 run. Post video on youtube, you will be an overnight sensation. You'll have people wanting to sponsor you, Efren will be asking for your autograph, Jeanette Lee will be wanting to go a date with you. You will be a legend.

are you implying that Jeanette Lee's a pool groupie? if that were true she'd have dated other great players before

If you aren't making a living with your cue, you have a hobby.

To support a hobby you need a job.

Lots of players at the U.S. Open have jobs. Ernesto is a table mechanic. Johnny Archer tends bar. Earl Strickland is a standup comic in training, learning to use props, soon to be bigger than Carrot Top.

Following your dream

Why don't you build up a $3,000 bank roll and go to one of the big events like SBE or Derby City and triple it up. Then move to Florida or NYC where there is a wealth of high level players and events. The cost of living there is tough though. You'll soon see where you match up and have lots of mentors. Remeber 10% of the players always take 90% of the money in tournament play. If you're not in the top 10% you'll never survive that way.

JC,

Pool is truly the Siren of Lorelei Rock. She was a legendary Rhine maiden whose song was so beautiful and enchanting, it lured sailors to the rock, where they would crash and die. They simply could not resist her.

You are only 28 with potentially a long life ahead of you. Life can be a very long time. Early in our lives we make decisions that become the roadmap to our future. Regardless of what you say, you have a responsibility - it's to yourself and your future.

It's not practical to make a living at pool. The greatest talents who have ever lived are hard pressed to make a living. Most dont pay taxes, or have health insurance, or vacation pay, or a retirement plan. It just not a good decision to follow that path.

If nothing else, learn a vocation. Spend a few years becoming an electrician or a plumber or some other skilled position where you can make some money. Then, once you do, become the best you can at it - be a pro and outwork your competition It's easier to suceed as a top pro electrician or plumber than a top pro pool player.

When you have succeded, take up the game as a hobby. Right now unless proven otherwise, playing pool is not a vocation, it's a hobby.

Chris

1200 bucks huh?? heres what i would do i would spend the majority of my money on a plane ticket to manila, if i had a car i would sell it for as much as i could get along with every thing i own except a backpack full of clothes and toiletries (not a good speller) sell your cues all of it. take what ever you have left and hit a hotel for a night in manila then go to a pool room pick up a house cue and gets the nuts from someone and build a bankroll. i wish i would have done it 6yrs ago lol (im not good enough tho)

eventually youll find a place to stay and a part time job but most importantly your at the meca for pool playing great players. stay there and learn to play real well and then come back as a unknown and live on the road.

why not right what have you got to loose.

I hope other parts of your life get better and your dream get's set to the side for a while because your headed down a tough road.

no one is belittling the OP....we are giving him VERY SOUND ADVICE for the most part. What he's reading is exactly what he needs to hear....it not a joke, its serious business he's talking about...and his seriousness seems lacking.....

His DREAM is a fine dream.....thats not his problem....if you read his introductory post its his DIRECTION and how he's looking to get there and what he's been doing to get there......from his statements all I heard was I want to be a great pool player but I havent done any real work to get there and I'm not even looking for a job I'm so in love with the game.....

I mean yes its brutal to have to hear all of this from such respected members of this site but IMOP the kid (dont care if he's 28....he's still a kid obviously)needs to hear it. There is not a dam thing wrong with his dream, its how he is going about to get there that is problematic.

To The OP: I commend you for having the nuts to post up your dream....even if we have burned the living sh*t out of your position. BUT we mean everything we say with GREAT LOVE in our words...as some of us (or someone close to some of us) have been in your position....wanting to be a road warrior....there are ways to build up to that and get there. This has been outlined and explained....if you follow the good ideas here you can find all the success you want.

BUT IT STARTS WITH YOU BROTHER! NOT WITH US....GO BAKE YOUR CAKE, THEN WE/SOMEONE WILL LEARN YOU TO MAKE BETTER CAKE!

best wishes,
-Grey GHost

What part of my answer doesn't make sense to you? Don't you see the top 10% winning tournament money all the time, no matter what level? Maybe you're in the majority then (the bottom 90%). Look at the top 5 pros, consistently winning the big events. Same for regional tours and down all the way to handicapped weekly's.

If the kid is as good as he thinks maybe he'll be okay. If he's the only one who thinks so, well then he's going to be a customer isn't he?

ok...by no job...i mean....a part time job......and even though i hardly made any money this summer was able to pay rent...and save 1200 bux.......

i may never be happy...

maybe i just need to shoot a million balls in...

maybe this forum is a relaease for me....and maybe im delusional....maybe its just therapy....but i really wish i could just do it

Dude ,
If your 28 and single ,you have some income and 1200 , You could fly out to Florida and get Bartram to work with you a few days . Fly back home and build up some more money , enter tournaments . Go play White Diamonds tournament . Small entry and huge calcutta . Match up for some small amounts . That is what players do .

the only way to learn if you're a player or a custmer is to go out there and do it , maybe getting knocked down a few times has it's lessons .

I was a great football player in High School . big fish , small pond .
Only took one semester at Penn State to show me that it wasn't going to be my career path . . . .
of course , I'm a fast learner.

cost of living ain't so bad in Florida - but you might get eaten by the sharks .

Then this is what you do...

Put down the mouse.

Grab your cue and walk out your front door.

Do that right now.

You'll either make it, or you won't.

One thing is for sure - you'll never find out of you just sit there on the computer just typing about it.

If you make it to El Paso - give me a call. I've been known to torture players into adopting the champion's mindset, but you'll never regret doing what you gotta do to get there.
