Shane vs. Donnie question

This was a great match and I had a front row seat to see both players do awesome! Donny's break was amazing, I have never seen anything like it in 30 years of watching pool. It was a tough match, but I certainly knew that it wasn't going to be easy after seeing how well Donny played at the US Open.

Donny was a complete gentleman and never did anything out of line at any time, unfortunately this is rare in todays pool matches. He is the type of player that I love to gamble against. I have learned that life is too short to gamble with idiots!

I am willing to stake Shane again at the same game, I think we should have a TAR rematch! I am not sure what Shane's schedule is like but I know I am tied up until after Derby.

I know that Donny has beat top players on neutral tables, so hopefully he will be able to get out to Derby and play some more of the same game. I am not sure if we will have time for a race to 100 while the Derby is going on though.

Thank you! I like playing with normal people such as yourself also. I don't know if I will be at derby. I've been meaning to go for years but just maybe I'll make it this year.

Donny,

You played great for 75+ games. Everyone applauds your efforts. Why are you saying 120 or 150 now? 100 isnt a short race, IMO. Do you really honestly believe Shane was lucky to have won this match? You made the wing ball 82 of 83 breaks, and still lost by 17 games. You displayed all of your weapons and came up short, so did Corey, so did Earl, and all 3 of you had that same defeated look at the end like WTF just happened? I'm sure you may kick a little better next time or you may get a few more good rolls, but can you break any better than this? I dont really think so, and you didnt get there. I am in no way knocking you, just trying to understand how you think you could possibly have played again today or tomorrow and done any better. Can you tell us where you think you failed? Breaking? Safety play? Was there something distracting your focus in the latter part of this match?

My safety play was pretty weak and for some reason I play safe better in 10ball. 9ball i get too much into offense sometimes. Either way I need to take the safety game up a notch. The momentum swing was really big and I got some shots that I didn't feel comfortable with at that time, and I was a little shocked at a few breaks I hit. He took advantage though.

wow you guys on the internet have no clue.
play svb 10 ball come on.donny knows he cant win in 10 ball.
svb is a better player.
but you guys think donny cant play or can only play ryo 9 ball.
do this lets take the 13 best players in the us ok now after them find 5 players to play donny 10 ball.
ill bet you dont get 5 players to play him 10 ball.
so he is in the top 15 in the us in 10 ball he can play.

Why can't he win? Us guys on the internet may not have a clue but we are the ones who fade all the talk AND spend the dough to watch you guys play pool.

I don't care if Donny thinks he can win or not - step up to the plate like SVB did againt Corey, Alex, etc... and step up your game in the process.

This isn't hustler's kindergarten here - Donny just outed 'his game' to the world and between that and dismantling Warren Kiamco with it that game is pretty much dead to anyone except Shane.

Donny is the one who says he can play other games and run out tougher layouts so let him step up and prove it.

Jeez 3 years ago Shane was getting weight and now the world wants weight - what changed? Nothing except Shane got in the box and proved to himself what he is capable of.

I am sure you have everyone in the world clocked and pegged Chris and feel like you have them put in the right slot. Maybe you do and I certainly won't argue that you are one of the few people in the world who has the experience to back up your assessments.

But maybe Donny doesn't think he's too far under Shane. Maybe he NEEDS to step up and get outside the comfort zone to become the champion that he can be. Maybe he doesn't want to be just outside the top 15 on Chris Bartum's list of top players but he wants to be the number one on all the ranking lists.

All of clueless internet nits (paying fans) would like to see that happen as well. We like the underdog, the guy going for broke and trying like hell to be a champion by stepping up to the plate with no tricks, no gaff, no spot, just get it on.

That was Shane Van Boeing three years ago and it's Shane Van Boening today. All HEART.

All we want to see is two warriors battle it out.

That's what these TAR matches are about - getting the best pool out of the backroom and seeing two guys slug it out.

In my clueless opinion.

That was pretty honest. You do that and watch out!

Thanks to TAR!!

Very interesting reading about the match. Now can't wait for the DVD, so please hurry up there Justin!! TAR for President.

Donny is without a doubt a world class player. He showed it at the US Open. To come within one rack from reaching the finals of one of the toughest tournaments in the world, that says it all.

Ya know the one negative thing about soft breaking is that it can kinda get you in bunt stroke mode. It's happened before and it will probably happen again. It either works great or it gets goofy.

So some of you think I can't run out if the table is tough or I can't soft break... lol!!!

Was the us open rack for each other and you can't soft break? Did I place 3rd? Did I lose 11-10 back to back on the tv table-which was the first time I played on it to get in to the finals of the us open?

Thinking about it, what would have been great is that when SVB went to his hard break and started taking a lead, is if DM would have done the same.

I was wondering what the out come would have been if DM started crushing the rack and running out. Maybe he would have caught a gear also and made a closer match of it??

Lets run it again and find out!!

Some have praised both players on here and others have offered only criticism for one reason or another.

I will only add that I have a lot of respect for the man who will get in the ring and take his chances, win or lose. It is all too easy to sit on the sidelines and make comments from the safety of the rail. A lot safer than throwing yourself into the fray.

Any time I see a big money match, I give credit to both players for getting in the box and going at it. Someone's gonna win and someone's gonna lose, and they both know it. Both players are putting their ass and their money on the line. Shane and Donny both have a lot of heart in my book.

Really?

Below is paraphrased:
The stipulations of individual matches are different, and some of these are compensated. Or We at TAR try to provide a means for players to gain exposure, sponsorship, and a chance a making a nice score for guaranteed money.

Justin, in consideration of your business I think this is something that was better left unsaid on the internet. The dealings between TAR and the players are just that, between you and the players - not everyone on AZB. I don't exactly understand why Donny would expect compensation but I guess that's pool players now. Good luck with the business.

P.S. Get the Bartram v Moore DVD ready so we can purchase it.

I've been wading thru these posts

I could not have worded it better. I have alot of respect for Donny because he steps up to the plate against top competition, but you CAN'T expect people to give you the respect you're looking for when you always add in the gaffes and stipulations.

If you played someone with a big name even, neutral racker, I guarantee that everyone here (myself included) would give you nothing but props...

This is just my opinion about this whole match. There seems to be an awful lot of talk, from the people who don't like Donny making stipulations about what game and the racking. I have to wonder, have any of you ever been to a pool tournament where there is gambling? I mean, gambling on pool. My lord. I have to wonder how many of you, will walk into the action room at the DCC tourney, and start telling anyone, {and I mean anyone} to man up and stop asking for any weight? It's rediculous in my opinion. I play pretty good pool. But if I was gonna match up with someone that plays like Shane, I'd try to make a game that I felt like I could win. If I just said, "come here and play me even, for $20,000". You'd all be calling me a moron. Maybe it would be better if he just asked for the 7 and last 3. Would that be ok?

The point is, gambling at pool, has always been about trying to set a game you have an advantage at. Last time I saw Cliff Joyner playing one pocket, he was getting weight. No one said a bad word about that. JMO

DONNY,

I was very impressed with your first TAR match this weekend. That break is the most unbelivable thing I have ever seen in pool. Above that, you deserve respect for getting into any kinda game with Shane, that puts you with a very elite group of players.

Most impressive for me was your composure and class. You never once spoke a cross word that I saw and still were focused in your chair even when things were going bad. Very Bartum-like.

A new Donny Mills fan,

After seeing Donny play several times, and talking to him a couple of times. I'll say this about him; Donny seems like a down to earth guy. I've spoken to him after he got knocked out of the US Open this year and I complimented him on his tremendous ryo 9 ball game after he lost to SVB. Not the best time to have a conversation, but both times Donny was cool to talk to. I can respect a guy like that.

Sometimes, it might be hard to read someone by the written word, over the Net.

Safes were critical when the match turned to Shane

This is my take on the match when it turned to Shane.

Donny was up @ 4, @ 70-66, give or take. Shane dogs a ball and the camera focuses on Shane as he sits, and I swear I could almost hear him think to himself: "That's it, no more F'g around." I called it out to the other guys with me watching - "Shane is pissed and he's going to catch a gear real soon."

Then... IT happened. Donny rattled the 5 on his 73rd break.

THEN, just a couple racks later, Shane says "F the soft break, I'm going hard."

Shane then got it in full gear. Let's not forget how stellar his safety play was at this time, and IMO it played a HUGE role in keeping Donny funked. The speed control, imagination and execution of some of those safes were as close to perfection as I've seen. Donny discusses safety play in this thread for good reason.

Soon after these events, when I looked at Donny's face while sitting, it really didn't look like positive thoughts and "Let's go" was running through his mind. He looked a little shaken and deer eyed.

Shane never looked back and Donny unfortunately never got it back.

It was a great match IMO. The pattern soft break was exciting to me. Maybe that's because I'd never seen it done to near perfection before.

Great stuff guys!! My hats off to both champs.

i agree I know John Mars and he is a great guy, not time for idiots.

I became a fan of Donny's after watching him at this year's Open. It was fun watching him play at that level. I can't wait for the DVD. Best of luck with your future matches Donny. You are an asset to the sport (as is Shane).

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Why can't you just show some class, and say "Yeah, we both played great, but Shane played a little better THIS time!"...rather than your comment. You're obviously a great player, but learn to be a graceful loser too. I guarantee Shane would be...as he has shown many times already.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read that.

Almost everyone on this forum gave Donnie alot of credit for a great showing and one person starting a thread like this makes Donnie take a piece out of Shane and his win in a race to 100 playing rack your own 9-ball.

Classy in the extreme Donnie.
