Should shortstops be banned from local bar box tourneys?

I'm surprised, usually the ones that complain are the ones that have the best chance to win if the short stop is banned.Poolfiend said:
When I found a tourny like this (easy), I made it a point to stay away 2 or 3 weeks before returning.
It's the same as when you find a good spot where the money is flowing. Don't burn the place out. Make infrequent trips and in the long run you make more. The trick is to have a few of these places.

Myself,I like to see the best players in the weekly tourneys.Sometimes it works best to do a handicap for some of the players.I played tourneys for 10 years going 2 and out most of the time against better players and did not mind donating,I just wanted to win tournaments not chase off the pool players.

We have the same problems in Austin, and to top the banned players...the house started cutting up the winnings to pay half money...and half bar tab. Most of the little $5-10 bar tourneys are driven by profit for the bar. They have no interest in pool excellence. Unfortunately, like the post said before, the better you are...the less you play or win.
I remember when the BCA banned Bob Vanover from playing in the Seniors division, after he won it two years in a row. I had just become eligible to play and I WANTED to play Bob Vanover. I didn't want a tournament victory tainted by the absence of a player who was clearly the best Senior player at that time. I "knew" that I stood a chance against him, and I wanted the challenge. When they kicked him "up" to the Masters division it took some of the luster out of the Seniors event.
I've noticed that some of the league systems try to get rid of the better players. I am not sure why. I play to play the better players and if they were not there then you just wind up with mediocre players winning. What good does that do for a competetive sport? Nobody has any reason to try to get any better. JMO

Two or three years ago when the BCA was in transition they made a rule change downgrading master players that were 65 years and over down to open players. This change would allowed them to play in the seniors or super seniors. The BCA made exceptions of Bob Vanover and myself and maybe others to remain as masters. This rule change only lasted one year. If its my establishment I would not ask anyone not to play but I would be tempted in the case of the players that consistently money and never spend a dime in the place for anything.Although I think I would still like to have the best players regardless of stinginess as long as they are not a ruthless hustler or impossible to deal with.

If its my establishment I would not ask anyone not to play but I would be tempted in the case of the players that consistently money and never spend a dime in the place for anything.Although I think I would still like to have the best players regardless of stinginess as long as they are not a ruthless hustler or impossible to deal with.
he spent how long practicing to get his game up to snuff so he could compete and do well and he's being punished for it! damn right that's BS. the other players don't like it they should try harder. who sweats a 10-20 dollar tournament fee when you get an honest chance to learn something

Let them all play. I'd like to run into Johnny Archer at my local barbox tourney (race to 1) just to watch him run the rack. I don't care who you are in a 1 rack race anyone can win.
There's a guy in my area started playing in our tourney, wore a UPA ballcap and shot lights out. A couple people started grumbling about a "pro" in our midst
and "he shouldn't be allowed to play" The TD wouldn't hear any of it (to her credit) and low and behold the guy doesn't win every week. Most of the complainers have no idea though, being out the door by the time it comes down to the money. They just assumed he was winning every night. He does get in the money more often than everyone else and might be the best player in the room (top 3 anyway) but he got heat because he was wearing some pool gear??? I hope to play him every time he's in the tourney with me. I figure if I beat him I'm probably in the money.

Okinawa is the worst
There is a tourney on the navy base here every month where they pay out 150 between 1,2,3 and entry fee is 0. I have to drive 45 minutes to get there and as soon as I get there people walk out. NOW thats nitty.Now that I have a better job I don't even think about going out there.

Our bar box tourneys. Scotch doubles, 24 players max. Drew names prior to the tourney. Good and average players where usually matched pretty even, so no guaranteed wins.
The local bar tourneys are $5 entry, race to 1. For the last couple of years, I've been going to 2. Unless I'm in dead stroke, it's hard to win a tourney like this. In the winter, there will be 15 or 20 players, and most of them can run out 1 rack of 8-ball. Even though I don't really dominate the tourneys and take all the cash, there are still a couple of guys who complain about me playing in them.
When I play in these tourney's, it's to go and associate with friends, have a few beers, and I occasionally help someone with a few pointers who wants to get better. It's not like I go, drink soda, and play dead serious all night trying to get everyones money.
There will always be someone complaining about something at a tournament, so let the guy play, {handicap him} and send the complainers somewhere else.

There were plenty of players in the tourney. I just wanted to play, I felt I had a chance to get the cash but I did not have to win, plenty of local players looked like they could run out a little themselves. After all I did not cash the first time. Oh well....
