In a Thread I recently posted, I was not aware that I mispelt the word Jewel in a statement about a Beautiful Cue Cap Set that I saw..
I said it look like "Little Jews" .. I mispelt Jewels, and should have read "Little Jewels".. I am very sorry to all who I have offended because of my ignorance.. I have received some comments about my slang and want to assure all of you I did not mean it the way it was spelt. Alton - Cue Caps Hawaii

The sad and heavy price we all pay for sensivity or the overuse of it.

I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it.

I was flipping through the channels last night and saw an infomercial about the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. On the infomercial all over the screen it was saying "just $200 can help 4 needy jews" "$15 a month can give a food box to an old jew". I am not jewish but geez compared to that - your slip up was nothing. The IFCJ are actually trying to help Jewish people and they call them Jews. Anyways - my story is done. :)

You gotta be kidding me... how funny is THAT!? Although I'm not very religious myself, my family is Jewish. How could someone take offense to that? Very funny, I think.

"Hey guys! Check out my new cue cap set!! It looks like little Jews!! I bet I can get schtooped by any chick who checks out this cap set!"

Alton is one of the nicest people I have met in my life. He means no harm. He just can't spell and thats the truth.

Shalom, brother.

I remember hearing in the office one time that a court reporter produced a transcript that had "racing a Jew to the car" in the text, when it should have been "res judicata." :o

A typo I will never forget is when a court reporter was using shorthand macros for an FDA meeting, and they made "AL" be "Alzheimer's," a term that kept coming up and she didn't feel like writing it out. The next week, she was doing a Senate committee meeting, and every time Al Gore's name was typed, she had "Alzheimer's Gore."

Jude,
What do you mean?
I can't find a dictionary that has mispelt in it.

AFAIK, spelt and misspelt have gained their place in most dictionaries...probably through "common use". I don't use them, but they are technically both fine. So, essentially he was missing an 's'. :D

The word "Jew" in and of itself is not offensive. It's the context. When in doubt, it's best to say something like "of the Jewish faith". If someone said, "he's an Orthodox Jew", I would see absolutely nothing wrong with this. If someone said, "He's a Jew Lawyer", yes I would be offended. If they said, "He's a lawyer of Jewish faith", I wouldn't be.

I know, very confusing.

There are some instances when "mispelt" is appropriate to use.

In my line of work, I would never use "mispelt" and would always spell it out as "misspelled."

Words like "gonna" and "gotcha" aren't used in proper writings, but in books, forums like this, and other arenas, they are perfectly fine!

Bottom line is that we all know what the writer means.

You're right. And neither of them is MISPELT, which is what the original post contained. Hence the humor.

Yes. I was focused on "misspelled" as the correction. I'm sorry. I love the word "spelt". I love saying it. It's been a year now. I REFUSE to say "spelled" ever again.

Maybe I have become jaded over the years, but NOTHING offends me any more.

People speak out of turn or insensitively every day and I simply use those instances as data for my further dealings with them.

I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over having fat fingered 'jew" instead of "jewel" on a computer keyboard.

And I have to believe that anyone who was righteously offended by your mistake would feel positively ridiculous if they actually stepped away and looked at the paragraph.

My first thought would have been, "cue caps look like 'little Jews'?!?!, what the hell does that mean??" rather than "He hates Jews! Put on your yamikas and join me in the hunt!"

I, for one, fully absolve you.
