Southwest cues....Just got my call...

Congratulations! Hope you will be happy with it. Where I live noone has that kind of high end cue, so I have never tried one.:( I guess if people are willing to wait 11 years for a cue it must be awesome!

The only real custom I've ever tried was a coker. It was very good, nice balance and good hit. I've always been curious about the high end customs though.

It's always classy how people can't wait to bash the fact someone had the patience to wait 10+ years for a SW. Then you get slammed for announcing your happiness. Maybe people are jealous or just really enjoy being a$$holes, I don't know. Whatever the case, enjoy whichever cue you have. I've got the time, the patience and the money for a SW and I hope when I'm gone, my kids will pass them to their kids.

Some woods to consider: Wenge , a dark red Rosewood Burl would be hot, African blackwood, maybe snake wood. It's nice to be able to choose. I wonder if she would make the cue with wood you sent her? That might be a way for you to get ebony. Just a thought.

I ordered mine in 2005, but I already have 4 South Wests and that just goes to show all the naysayers that you don't have to wait 10 or 11 years to get one. I talked to Laurie recently and knew about the ebony situation, but I won't mention any details here. There are other great cue makers that have very long waiting lists though. If you got a South West you can turn it into cash in days or weeks, because they sell as quick or quicker than any other cue out there. Not to many cue makers out there that make highly sought after cues, but South West is at or near the top of the list.

Why? What makes them so much more different than other cue makers? I've never hit with one so I'm asking to understand? I shoot with an Andy Gilbert and it hits great. I just ordered a Josey because I'm in the market for another cue and I heard that Keith makes a GREAT cue that hits solid with great feel/feedback. I also discovered that he was privately endorsed by "Ice Pick" Nick Varner and Shawn Putnum ( who makes their own cues).

Dennis Orcollo is one of my favorite players to watch and I didn't know he used to play with a southwest cue, so that's intruging.

But seriously, what makes it a great cue?

Southwest cues are high demand for several simple reasons.....they plays amazingly solid, very well built with great balance that you can feel as soon as you pick up the cue and they hold their value plus some.

I would probably go with curly purple heart on purple heart if ebony is not available.

Duc.

If I had spots for 2 cues and no ebony, I would take 1 solid pau ferro and 1 solid goncalo alves.

You make me want to get on the waiting list on pure principle alone (because of the investment value of the cue).

Do you have to submit a down payment to hold a spot?

I ordered two Southwest cues in 2002, just got my call my cues are ready to be built. I asked for a couple days to determine what i want. My tastes have changed in the last 11 years.

I'm thinking a pair of ebony on ebony cues might be nice. One red flame and one blue....

PS. I'll be selling one....

Excited....

Congrats. I've never owned one but I have seen Pao Ferro cues from them that are beautiful.

Man, you gotta be kidding me! Waiting that long to have a cue built and they don't have the materials! I understand some cues have a mystique, and presumably there is a sound market for selling them, but it certainly wouldn't play any better than my Josey.

You are correct sir. It will not play any better than your Josey.

However, I'd bet you could not sell your Josey for $1,000-1,500 more than what you paid for it the day it was delivered to you.

There is a reason why the wait is so long and its not all about how good it plays.

Yeah, I'd go with African Blackwood primary and a nice dark brown, like cocobolo or rosewood or pau ferro for prongs. Tony at BlackBoar uses blackwood for his $6k plain jane players for a good reason, they play great. Ebony...somebody in the w/fs section is selling some at really inflated prices...iirc, $275 for a 2x4x18 or 20, roughly, but my memory is shot. I bought a 2x4x22 about 5 years ago for $90. Wish I was in your shoes right now, this sounds like a really fun problem to solve!!

You've been on a waiting list for 11 years? Wow that's patience right there. Did you have to pay a deposit? I'm only asking because I don't know if I'll be alive 10 years from now.

Suggestion

I suggest you call Laurie again and ask what woods are available for current use. Many of the woods mentioned are not used by SW. Additionally, I doubt that she would use your wood for many reasons. Realize it has to go through a curing period.

As for the ebony, it is true they are not taking orders. I spoke to her yesterday on another matter. Ebony has been very "HOT" for awhile now, not becuase they play better, but because they are popular in the orient and bring a premium. FYI, SW started recently charging an upcharge for ebony noses before they stopped taking orders.

Good luck, I am sorry to hear of your disappointment, however, they have other woods that will play ouotstanding and look fantastic.
all the best,
Phil

I have never touched a SW cue.

But i have shot with many a mcdermott, lucasi, Joss and even my palmer. None of which feels more sturdy, straight and well built as a Pechauer.

Mybe its me, but his cues feel, shoot, and roll perfect!

My other bs cue is a Action cue that ran me $120. but if i purchase custom, i'm going Pechauer.
Wouldnt mind a custom made cue from Jesse from 911 Billiards here in washington.

I'll be sure to get my hands on a SW if possible to see what the hype is about.

Good for you. I think I may have put my order in around the same time but I need to check my records on my work computer. In the meantime, I've picked up a couple pre-date South Wests and that is what I have been shooting with for a while now. I even have a Kersenbrock, but don't want to put my Southwest down.

Nothing at all wrong with Josey,Gilbert, etc. I have other nice custom cues besides South West(a nice Carmeli being one of my favorites), but South West to me,especially with an ivory ferrule and a medium layered tip, just have a hit, feel, and feedback that no other cue that I've used seams to have. Only one brand of cue can be your favorite, unless you have a tie at the top, mine is South West.
