I had a crazy thought today. Since it seems the Viking plant is closing what if some big name custom cue maker like Barry or another was to buy the place and come out with a line of cues. I know they make Buska replicas in Japan but how about a line to compete with Schon quality and price points?
Just kicking this around.

It would just be another production Cue, the ACA, and ICA have many member who make great cue, so you need not spend 5K for a Cue JMHO!

I wish it would happen but I don't think it will anytime soon. The reason Companies the size of Viking are closing is because either they are just tired of the business after all these years or they can no longer compete with their Competition.

Many of the large companies have had to make changes to survive in the current market place. Most of these companies now have product lines produced in Asia so that they are competitive in the price range of the import cues. I do not know for certain, but I do not think Viking had an import line of cues and if they did it was not public information.

So with all of that said why would anyone want to open another company and try to compete, when Paul Huebler first closed his door's for Huebler Cues his employee's worked a deal with Paul to purchase the business. It did not end well, Paul had to step back into the picture and ultimately closed up shop. I know there was more to it than just competition in this case but that was also part of the problem.

A company in Taiwan already makes Gus and George tribute cues.
And, not the signed ones either that people are used to seeing on EBay. They carry a different logo.

so you need not spend 5K for a Cue JMHO!

A person would have to sell a lot of cues to buy a cue cue that was worth that much, right Bluce?

szamboti cues by adam/helmstetter???

man, you talk about adulteration of the value of a commercial name! does anybody think an $800 repop cue is a valid stepin for a genuine szamboti?
one of the saddest things i have seen is someone who thinks he/she has a Balabuska because it has the ^(%#$#( name between the points.
one case in point: i have maybe twenty abu cardinal reels. some were made in sweden, some in japan.3's, 4's, 4x's, and 6's. the zebco cardinal reels have lasted since about 1974 or so, the abu garcia reels since about 1985. abu garcia brought out an abu garcia cardinal 3 that is similar to the other on the outside but they last maybe 4 months and then they're toast.
my old zebco cardinals are still going strong. the cardinal reels of today have the name on them but the performance is not there. what was it bbking sang: the thrill is gone.
personally i hope it never happens out of respect for gus and barry's family. ok , off my soapbox.

A friend who owned a pool room/restaurant used to repeat the same joke over and over:

"You know how you make a small fortune in the restaurant business? Start with a large one."

He went out of business.

I think the production cue game is tougher.

Damn. I didnt know Viking was closing down. I shot with a Viking on and off since I was about 15 years old. Now Im freakin bummed!
