Tell 'em like it is, Alex!

Here's an example of how faulty these news reports are. Snippet from the AzB front page news:

Pagulayan lamented that because he is already out of the Guinness tour, it would lessen his chances to make it to the World Pool Championships which will be held in Manila in November.
Baloney! WPC Champions of the last 5 years are automatically qualified. Alex won the WPC in 2004.

The Guinness Tour also serves as a qualifying event for the World Pool Championships...
Thanks for clarifying some things bandido.

Though I do have a somewhat related question. How does Efren and Busty guarantee themselves spots in this year's WPC, if they both have boycotted the Guinnes Tour? Efren won in 99, which is more than 5 years ago. Thanks.

If they don't win any recognized tournament then they have to go through the qualifying tournaments which I sincerely doubt. There's such a thing as Organizer's (BSCP) and Event Presenter's (Matchroom) Wild Card.

Hmmmm...... I think the BSCP can simply throw away the so-called ranking and qualifying system since as they have mentioned that they have the prerogative to change the line-up, eventhough it may seem unfair to pool players who joined the Asian Tour just to qualify. duh duh duh !

realistically speaking, I doubt it if Efren and Busty would ever be excluded in the WPC. influence always have a bearing. if ever they will be excluded, all I can say is goodluck to the newcomers !!! ;)

Oh Boy, you're getting things mixed-up! BSCPs prerogative applies to the Guinness Tour and not WPC. And most specially not with Alex when it concerns the WPC since he automatically qualifies. It too isn't unfair to pool players who..... "joined"? They don't just join they are selected, initially supplied $800 for expenses and given a chance to earn a share of the prize fund. Unfair?

To Bandido:

What's your take about Efren and Busti siding with Alex in case Alex' plans
pushes through? Is there any truth to this? I know for a fact that Puyat and
his stable of players have been known not to bow down to BSCP's whims
before, but that was a long time ago when De Tagle was at the helm. I can
still remember when Edgar Acaba was still in Puyat's stable but switched
allegiance and was promptly booted out from the Puyat stable. There was
a cold war back then and Rolly Vicente was keeping me updated about this...

What TV show?

Does anyone know what TV show Alex was asked to participate in for free? Was it a tournament show? Was it a sit-com? What? And, when was the request made that Alex participate?

I am wondering exactly what the tie-in was between this show and any tournaments Alex was playing in. Or was it a totally separate deal that had no connection to any tourny?

Jerry

Is Alex a player rep for Puyat Sports like Efren and some of the other Phillipines? I know that over there, Puyat Sports is the equivalent to Nike here. Just wondering what they are saying, if anything, about this.

Nope, I'm just being sarcastic ! :D :D :D

Here is my theory about the matter. I believe that some people in the BSCP made some arrangements with the entertainment people. it is more like whoever delivers Alex to participate in the said program, would get a hefty sum of money. this of course without the approval of Alex. the problem occured when the supposed agent/s refuse to compensate Alex if ever the deal materializes. Alex vehemently refused, the agents got embarrassed and the opportunity to make money out of Alex was lost. Now, to get even, the BSCP canned Alex and made some of the most convincing reasons as to why they canned the small fellow. I believe this has nothing to do with pool but apparently became one due to personal grudges. the dilemma of mixing personal matters with professional ones. I cannot disregard such since these sort of things also happen.

If ever Alex was correct in this one and I stand by what he said, then the BSCP needs real restructuring. however, if the BSCP is innocent, then I would render an apology for my initial evaluation of the matter and I'll state that I'm an idiot for believing Alex over them. fair trade ! ;)

I think that there are some political maneuvering going on and it's all about monopoly. To me it's nothing new and totally old stuff that needs to be booted out. I'd prefer that the past political maneuvering to monopolize the control* of the sport be as such, the past. I'd like to see and help in working on solidifying the pool community here, from grassroots to pro level. Not just of the actual sport participants (players) but also allied entities such as poolhall operators (one table street corner joints to multi-tble upscale poolhalls, equipment manufacturers and dealers, etc.

I posted on this thread because I saw all these posts that were fanning the flames started by sensationalized reporting. Exactly what was happening to both camps here. They were sort of talking to the other through the news media and basing their replies, to the other, on what's reported and opinion of those around them when they should have sat down and talked face-to-face.

*sorry no details as it'll expose me to legal action but I assure you that you won't like it. You won't understand or be able to follow the story since you weren't around it anyway. So I say, just drop the past and march forward with the new.
**Who's suppose to do the bowing to whose whims? LOL, there are really 2 sides of a story! Like I've written, out with the old ways and work on being one.

The BSCP has a No Prima-Donna rule. They'd rather spend the excessive requested compensation on projects to benefit the many(other players in the country). This sport is not going to end up like another pro-sport here where the players' salaries got out-of-control which caused more harm to that sport. Now that pro sport orgs finances is in the red and all the players are getting 40% or more pay cuts. Advertisers/sponsors don't spend as much as you think for pool and that's common knowledge.

From this start, I assume you don't actually have any facts about the matter. Is that correct?

Earlier you accused the BSCP of being corrupt. I asked you if you have specifics. Since you provided none, I assume you don't have any facts about that either.

Believe me when I say that this mid-range pro should consider him- or herself very fortunate.

I would guesstimate that 95 percent of the tournament soldiers that I have firsthand knowledge of in my neck of the woods who play pool on a full-time basis get no funds from any sponsor. Yet, they still travel the globe in pursuit of that almighty win because of their deep passion for pool.

JAM

deep passion for pool? Are you serious? 95% of the players I know never practice and get up at 4 in the afternoon. The fact that they MIGHT win a tournament or a set for a couple of thousand and be ok for a while is the reason that they choose this lifestyle.

and your point is?

I don't give a cent whether you would agree or disagree with my siding to one party over the other. if you really did read and understood my other previous posts. try to read beyond the introduction and finish the whole statement. it would just be a waste explaining to you again if you didn't grasp the idea of those initial posts. If I said "BLACK" and you think and vehemently said that it is "WHITE", I won't convince you since that what you think it is. and, that's a fact.

Is this by the way related to the prime-time pool show/tournament that they're gonna have in RPN-9?

Hey Bob, this looks to me like "I have no idea really, just slinging opinions".

Dave, just slinging his opinion :p

I certainly hope that kind of objective is really put into practice and no monkeying involved. be as you may bandido, and I'll be as I am.

I've read through this thread before making any comment. There are some wild accusations being tossed around here and a lot of finger pointing going on.

Let me just say this. Everything is not always as it seems. Alex is a wonderful player and a great asset to Pool with his personality. Was he treated unfairly in some way? I'm not so sure. Did it have anything to do with his "supposed" appearance on a local TV show? I seriously doubt it.

The make up of the team that represents the Philipines on this Guinness Tour is constantly being shuffled and changed to give more players an opportunity to compete. That much I know. Perhaps Alex brought about his being "shuffled" out of the line-up because of his behavior at the previous tour stop.

There comes a point where entertaining behavior becomes overt "sharking" of an opponent. A decision was made that point had been reached and then some. In the Philipines, sportsmanship is held in very high regard. Behavior that might be acceptable over here, is considered to be in bad form over there. Even in the gambling parlors of Manila, it is rare to see any type of sharking in a match.

I am not taking sides in this matter, just pointing out that there may be another perception of things that we are not fully aware of. I love Alex, and I hope this situation gets straightened out before this years WPC.

ALEX "The Lion" Pagulayan lambasted the current leadership of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) and described the group as the most disorderly National Sports Association (NSA).

Pagulayan, who is in Cebu for the 2007 Sun Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge, alleged that BSCP is biased for some players and that he is deeply affected by their actions.

Aside from the bias, there is also a lack of program for the players. Because of these reasons, Pagulayan is now serious in his bid to put up an association for the billiards and snooker players, which he will try to work out once he returns to Manila.

"That's the first thing I will do once I'm back in Manila. I am already supported by 80 percent of the players, this includes Django (Francisco Bustamante and Efren (Reyes)," Pagulayan said.

Pagulayan had a good chance of making it to the 2007 Guinness 9-Ball Tour Grand Finals but was replaced by Jeffrey de Luna, who only has 40 points, going into the final leg of the tour in Beijing on Aug. 3 to 6.

Was a bit shocked when i read this.
