That elusive feeling cue

I currently have and use 6 or 7 different cues during the course of a week. From my beloved Tucker, Kikel, Cog, Madden, AE, among others. BUT, I recently picked up a Frey Sp that has a feel to its own. I spoke to the previous owner and he confirmed what I feel.

The cue has a sound that is different. Instead of the normal click that my others have this one has more of a Tink sound. It is the same sound that you hear when watching a televised pool event. It also gives a very nice resonance back through the handle, signifying a nice hit.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal for all Frey's and/or Scruggs??? Or is this just one of those that just happened to have what I concider the perfect hit>>>>>>

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, that elusive hit/sound is the "holy grail" of searching for a cue IMO. I was lucky enough to get that hit in a LE-27 Lucasi with the new radial shaft that I bought off the internet! just lucky I guess, or maybe they all hit that way?...I've had Blacks, Boars, Phillippes, Schons, with the same hit. The best I ever had was a Rosewood Black Boar that I #@&^@#$ sold.....that cue sounded like 2 ball peen hammers hitting together. Players used to stop me to hit a ball with it all the time. I only had 2 Boars and both hit very similar.

I can tell you I won't sell that Lucasi!.....I have read threads about guys asking cue builders to try to get that hit/sound out of a cue. I'm not sure if any of them are trying it? I do know that hit was mostly found in my stainless steel jointed cues.

Freys hit very well (same as Scruggs sneakies). It is a combination of the shaft taper, the ferrule and the soundness (construction) of the cue.
Mine has a nice tink to it as well, same joint. I used to have a Joss that Danny Janes made for me in the 80s that was a phenomenal hitting cue that had a tink to it. A buddy of mine told me his Szamboti was the only cue he ever had that tinked. Both of those were steel joints.

My most recent cue purchase and playing cue is a Jensen. I told Mike that I wanted a good playing cue. He said I know what you want, in fact it is his favorite. Bocote, piloted SS joint, and ivory ferrule. A basic cue with nothing fancy and no points or inlays. He said it best feeling and hitting style that he has ever made. The first hit I made with it felt different than any other cue I had. When it hits the CB there is a tink and the vibration carried back thru the cue feels solid, not hard or stingy. I love the sound and it is hard to put the cue down once I start to hit the balls because the sound is so addicting. Other players have mentioned to me that the cue sounds different than other cues. They lose interest real fast when I tell them how much it cost. Most of them are decal cue owners so that in itself may explain why it sounds different to them. ;)

I also have a 2004 Black Boar that has this sound. In fact, I have had other players come up to me and notice the sound of that cue from a distance.

I can understand the sound being attainable with a tip or ferrulle. but what about the feel through the handle??

Again this is the only cue out of about 50 that I have owned at one time or another that has had that feeking !!

I wish all my cues had a feel like this one!!! Probably wishfull thinking

I had that feeling on a TS sneaky, Hagan cue and a few Zylrs with exposed handle.
First, the exposed handle is a big factor.
The handle/prongs being harder than the maple front is a big factor as well as it accentuates the the maple front. I have purpleheart sneaky with b'eye maple that you can really feel the hit of the cue. You know if you punched the ball or followed it.
The taper of the butt and the shaft has a ton to do with it too. You can't have a stiff tapered butt and a whippy tapered shaft.

A lot of it is that its a spliced butt sneaky. Most people don't realize that sneaky's often have the best "pure hit" feeling that you can get. Something to be said for not having multiple pieces glued/screwed together.
One proof...its been long known that the best hitting/playing Meucci was the sneaky. And yes...I said the dreaded "M" word...please send no hate mail...LOL!!!

I had a Troy Downey cue with this same type of hit sound to it. The cue had a phenolic joint with a radial pin. The shaft that I used actually had a 3 inch split in it near the joint, but under the finish. You could clearly see it but not feel it. It reminded me of my Callaway driver ping sound. I really like the hit but for some stupid reason sold the cue for almost half of what I had into it. How dumb was that?

Prolly the only Meucci with no rattles.

Joey...please speak the truth from now on....you know the M sp's rattle too. I've seen several new ones with as many as 3 weight bolts together, touching, and only finger tight. CLINK-CHING-BAZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!

I haven't seen the new china-made Moochi sneakies.
Of course their pins come off too since they use yellow glue. :D

If it hits that great, let me know in a couple of weeks when you get ready to sell it :D :D :D .

Just kidding. I hope you have found your perfect hitting cue.

Mike

although my main playing cue is a schon, i have an old 95-1 meucci sneaky, the one with the black meucci band around the middle of the butt.......and its got a super hit. In fact i never knew meuccis had such a bad rap until i joined this board lol.

Darn, I wish I would have known this earlier. I've been searching for a cue that went boink. I've had dozens that went click, a few that went tink, even one that went ouch (rhino foreskin tip) but no boinks.

Mr. Varney may be on to something with the full-splice idea. My Hercek Hoppe cue has that same communicative tink sound/feel. Love it.

When exactly do you hear that "tink" sound? I get that when i shoot the ball usually with a lot of draw. Do you also hear it when you hit the cue ball dead center as well?
