“It would have been nice if someone had told me about the daily special.”
Doesn't sound all that bad to me even if uttered in the most sarcastic manner possible. Certainly not bad enough that she was entitled to ignore him. She could have simply explained she didn't mention it because the rate was not in effect because it is off during tournament weeks, and that would have been that. He didn't call her names, yell, or get in her face or anything.
Lou's charactor is a pretty easy read from his postings, i am betting he gave the chick some sarcastic remark 5 minutes in on the first day, so its pretty easy to see what was going to happen to him there lol
Champ it is a bet I can make with perfect confidence that you, itsfroze, anybody else bashing Lou's behavior in this thread have never met him or have a clue how he behaves in a pool hall. He recently spent three days in Buffalo Billiards also. I watched him interact with other players and the workers there for most of a day as well as played him awhile. He behaved as a gentleman and a guest at all times.
Icing on the cake as to what I am saying, Buffalo, several people that work there, and a handful of the regulars asked when Lou would be coming back, all were eager to see him again. He was popular enough at Buffalo's to run for office! Wasn't because he was a fish either, pretty sure he left with a little more than he came with and the regular he hooked up playing with wasn't anybody's pigeon.

i'm afraid to say, i've heard best billiards is closing on friday, such a shame as it's a great room
I hope this isn't true and it's a shame if it is. Ermanno and Mary are really nice people.
Just last week a well-known somewhat regular there expressed to me the hope that Ermanno could keep it going so that alerted me. He said the players there didn't want a good $9 pasta dish, they wanted a $4 hamburger but Ermanno wasn't willing to adjust to that. He also said he thought the table charge formula needed to be adjusted.
Worst part is that Lou may have to go to Cue Club again next year and ask if there is a day rate when he walks in instead of standing there and waiting to see if the bar girl is insightful enough to warn him in advance that the day rate is off without being asked.
Thanks, Hu.
Since it looks like the usual bashers have come out the woodwork (again) I'll just wrap this up by saying that for the three days I was there the housewoman and I got along just fine. Each day she'd ask me for an ID and I gave her a $50 bill. When I went up to pay the first time she'd ask if I wanted the time taken out of the $50 and I told her something like, "No, that's my ID. I need it to get through security back at the airport" and she laughed out loud. The next day, when we went through the $50 thing again she said, "Oh, I remember you" and laughed again gave me the $50 back and I paid with a $20 and that was the extent of our interaction until the last day which was also, with the exception of her silence and "suit yourself" very cordial.
To itsfroze-- yes, you're right I was a sucker and now I'm smarter. But, IMO a business should not treat it's customers as suckers in the first place.
BTW, Vagabond, who is posting in this thread, has seen me at the Cue Club a couple of times over the years and can vouch for how I behave there. I doubt it would be much different than how Hu described my conduct at Buffalo Billiards in NOLA. Not that any of that would matter to crew from the AZ Clown Car ;-)

Holy cow! Woodwork? Clown car? I hope you don't think I've been bashing you. I'm just trying to fill in more background to the situation you described.
The last time I was at Cue Club (quite a while ago) the day rate wasn't even posted. The regular table rates were hand written on a small sign located thirty feet away from the bar where the girl would have taken your ID/deposit. The first time I was there I had to ask what the table rates were. It took me a while to notice the posted regular table rates. The day rate was initiated later to compete with Pool Sharks.
If the day rate is still not posted and the girl didn't recognize you as a regular who would know about the day rate why would she warn you in advance that a non-posted day rate is off during the tournament?
If you got along with her great until this issue came up and then she clammed up maybe she just didn't want to deal with a disagreement about the table rate, posted or non-posted, off or on.
The way I look at it if you played with the expectation of getting an hourly rate then you got what you agreed to.
Well, you are obviously too fancy for the place, Mr toilette:grin::grin:...The first time I went to the washroom, there was a trail of puke on the carpet leading into the toilette. ...

While I was in Vegas for the One Pocket Open I practiced for three days at the Cue Club on East Sahara. Each time the same short dark haired woman (who I took to be the manager), gave me a table and took my money when I was done. It’s a big room and on the last day I was there I played on a table near a sign that said something to the effect: Day time special, play from X to X hours for $8.
Each day that I had played at the Cue Club had fallen into those hours. So I go up to pay and the bill is like $18, pretty much what my bill had been the previous two days and I say to the woman, “It would have been nice if someone had told me about the daily special.” And she doesn’t say a word while she’s counting out my change. And I ask her, very nicely, “Why didn’t you tell me about it?” And, again, she says nothing. As I leave I say, “I guess I’ll just have to find another pool hall to practice at and she finally says something: “Suit yourself” and I replied, “I will.”
As many of you know, I travel around a fair bit and have played pool at rooms all across the country. And in my experience, sometimes rooms offer daytime specials, typically offering a flat rate of $8-10 to play from opening to sometime in the afternoon. Others stipulate that if you buy lunch you get to play free until 3 or 4pm. *Not once* at any other room I’ve played at anywhere in the country has the houseman ever failed to tell me about a daily special, either before or after I’ve played.
And so the fourth day I go Best Billiards on East Flamingo and, as I mentioned in my trip report, the room is wonderful. And I see a sign on the wall that offers an $8 “Daily Special” and I decide that I won’t say anything and that I’ll just go up and pay my time when I’m done and see what happens. I’d had a cappuccino and when I go up to the counter the woman says, without prompting, “It’d be cheaper for you if you just paid the daily special rate, so your bill with the cappuccino is..." whatever it was.
Anywhos, if you’re looking for a pool room to play at in Las Vegas, I’d recommend Best Billiards -- great equipment and they serve a mean cappuccino. They have a Daily Special too
