The hip-hop young crowd

I keep reading all these posts about how much everyone hates the young kids hanging out in pool rooms, with baggy clothes, listening to rap.

There's a certain pool hall I go to with nothing but this crowd. When you walk into the room, you'll see 3 gold crowns and 20 other 9' tables (these aren't worth much) and 16 or so bar tables. You'll see 1 snooker table but nobody is ever on it. You'll see 60 people at any given time and the oldest one you see is standing behind the counter. He looks to be about 30. It's always the same guy. He's the owner. You'll probably see about 10 guys between the ages of 20 and 30. And everyone else is between 16 and 20. Look around, there's always someone sleeping somewhere. You'll see 5 and 10 dollar action on every occupied table in the room with a 3/5 ring game on the main money table. Come in on the right night and you might see a hundred dollar set. The male/female ratio in the room is about 50/50. Nobody in the room can really play, but everybody takes the game quite seriously. The only thing to eat is candy from the vending machine. The only thing to drink is soda from the fridge. Hip hop plays 24/7, but it's not loud at all. You don't worry about roadies too much because nobody really knows about this place and there's not much money changing hands. But be careful, the guy behind the counter plays pretty sporty.

Now I don't know about you guys, but that place is like heaven for me. No drunks talking about how they used to play. No 40 year olds still looking for easy cash, trying to rob everyone in the room. No self-proclaimed champs trying to teach you how to play but never want to gamble. This room is strictly pool. It's not about the money in there. It's about the game. These kids are there to play pool. They want to be the best in the room. A strong player gets the respect he deserves. Only the guys who venture elsewhere have heard about weight. But it doesn't matter, everyone wants to play you even anyway. You won't make more than 100 bucks but you will see a lot of heart. Nobody wears clothes that fit. The girls wear it too small; the guys, too big. But who cares what you're wearing anyway. Most of the good players I know look like bums. It's nice to find an escape from the woofing. It's nice that people ask to play for $10. They know they can't win. But you're the newest face, you play pretty good. Everybody wants to take a shot at you. It's nice when nobody asks you for the world. It's nice when nobody is drunk. It's nice to know I can play pool with a girl and not have to worry about everybody hitting on her. It's nice to play pool. I don't care about what you wear and how you speak. I care about a table, some balls, and a stick.

Nice post Drew. I'd enjoy a place like that even if I'd be the geezer by a LONG ways! :D

I'm one of the 'hip-hop young crowd'. And proud to be part of the culture... Although the music you guys are hearing in the last few years really isn't anything of my liking. Hip-Hop, and what I see/hear today are two different things.

As far as the pool hall... Of course I have no problem with the hip-hop crowd being there... I just have a problem with the blasting loud music, the drunks, and the over-all 'bad look' most joints have... and that happens just as much with the 'rap' crowd as it does with the hicks and hillbilly's.
When I'm playing, and playing for the cash, I really don't need 18 people on the one table next to me all loud dancing about and acting stupid or starting a fight with the person on the table next to them.... bad look.

I'd like to be in the pool hall with no-body but the pool players and gamblers (+ backers) present... thank you.

i'm 40 and have been listing to Rap since the sugerhill gang started rap in the 70's, i dont listen to white music at all, classic rock is for people living in the past, give me the newest music there is and i'm happy, i hate old played out music, but music isnt what i like in a pool room, its quality equipment and players, gambelrs and not nut hunters like in vegas. phoenix was good action for me in the late 80's to the mid 90's, i dont know where the action is now.

Yes Sir, I am 33, and grew up listening to Public Enemy, NWA, Cypress Hill, LL Cool J (of course) and a host of others.

It's not about disrespect, it's about young people expressing themselves; Just like it was for every generation before them.

I grew up on Motown and went to Rock during the Woodstock generation.

Mountain was my favorite group, with Leslie West, Corky Laing, Steve Knight, Felix Pappalardi. Favorite Mountain tune, "Nantucket Sleighride." I don't think they'd be good music for a pool room, though! :D

Drexeline Billiards in Drexel Hills, PA is a great pool room. They have music turned on, but very low in volume, which provides a comfort level to listen to when shooting pool, IMHO!

We were at Snookers pool room in Providence, RI for a tournament one time, and during the day, the music was soft. By night, it was so loud that you could actually feel the vibration of the music in the entire building. Of course, the patrons the pool room caters to at night is quite different than the pool-playing daytime crowd. For playing pool, loud music sucks, no matter what kind of music it is, IMHO!

My man, Leslie West, in action on the right! :p

I'm 55, I frankly don't even know how the word music and this swearing war noise are used in the same sentence.

But, you hit the nail on the head. Some in the poolroom like it, some don't, but all who go to a pool room pretty much like pool. So, lets keep our respective music / noise to ourselves and not infest each other with it. Especially at rude, obscene, inconsiderate volumes. Heaven forbid we try something civil.

I don't care what kind of music they prefer, as long as they enjoy it, even if it is some corporate crap that is getting shoved down their throat.:D

The thing that gets is lack of respect for the game.

This 21 y/o kid has been hangin around, everyone has tried to show him shots, how to hold his cue, etc etc and he has no respect for the game.
He thinks in no time, just playing 9-Ball that he can be a gambler and start winning money.

When I first started playing when I was 14, I went to library and read books on pool and went to the book store and purchased whatever books I could find and was well read on pool, and it's past champions, then I started hanging around the pool room, and had the ultimate respect for the guys who taught me stuff or told stories.

We mentioned Buddy Hall the other day and this punk did not even know who he was:eek:

The only pool movie he has seen is PHJ on tv.

He had heard of COM but never seen it, and had not even heard of the Hustler.

With all the information that is at these kids fingertips today, how in the hell do you not know who Buddy Hall is if you are planning on gambling on 9Ball?

This is the stuff that gets me.

The music does not bother me. The only thing that is annoying to me from this hip-hop crowd is the ones who wear pants that are about 8 sizes to big and there butts hanging out:confused:   .

Just say no to Butt Qwack

Where are you located?

Every generation has had their own music and most of the older people hated the new stuff. My parents couldn't believe I'd rather listen to Rock & Roll than Perry Como or Welk zzzzz. I had three daughters and a son growing up as teenagers and can remember yelling through the door of their rooms...TURN THAT S*** OFF. But in a poolroom I do prefer no music or 1950's soft rock play low. Johnnyt.

The implications from the (and I use the term loosely) music, the talk of shooting people, and the vulgar words, bother me as much as the lack of melody.

Yep, the pants hanging off their asses bothers me also. I think it is again, an in your face type statement that our liberal, politically correct society is afraid to take on. I say hook em up with the silver bracelets for indecent exposure, and taser em too. :)

Seriously though, even more annoying than the dress itself is wondering why in the world they don't realize they look ridiculous. Ha ... :)

Nothing hits the ears better in a pool room, for me, than blues. I love listening to the blues while I play at a reasonable volume. However, I am a blues fan, so I guess I am kinda biased.

If a person doesnt like a paticular pool room for whatever reason...music, the crowd, ect... just don't go.Go to a pool room that fits your personality better. Everyone is different and people have different tastes in what they like. I really don't like it when people bash people for their personal opinions on music and clothes. Their music isn't bad and neither is their clothes...you just do not understand it.

I am not a heavy metal fan or a rap fan...but I have respect for the people who do. Without choices, we might as well just become a communistic state. I kinda thought that is what America was all about...freedom and choice. Oh well, I guess I could be wrong...but I highly doubt it.

A lot of this has to do with personal prejudices and where you come from. Before I moved to Louisville and started teaching in the West End...i didn't have a lot of respect for rap music. Now that I teach 50% minority students and have become close to them, I can understand it a whole lot better and I have gained respect for it. These kids come from a different place than I do...my Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings probably sounds just as silly to them as their 50 cent did to me before I moved to Louisville.

Great post Drew...we should be glad that young people are taking up the game. That is what we should be striving for. I try to interest my students in the game as a teacher and as an athletics coach. The game of pool can teach a lot of valuable lessons if played in the proper setting. I commend you for the post and the people of my generation taking up a game that I have loved for many years...some of these cats will probably be giving us weight before too long.

JAM,
Unfortunately, it is against the law to play Mountain at any volume below your system's maximum (see album note on the Nantucket Sleighride album). If it isn't "earsplitting" then it isn't Mountain. In around 1971 I saw Mountain perform; it was the first super loud concert I was subjected to; a trend that has continued to this day unfortunately. I also prefer a quieter pool setting.

I guess we didn't look silly in the 1950's wearing our hair long, sideburns down to our chins with a D.A in back and a scquerl-tail sp hanging in front over our eyes. Then we wore pink or black shirts (collar up of course) black or charcoal pegged pants with saddle stitching and a long comb hang out of the back pocket. Then black loafers with pointed toes. Top it off with a black motorcycle jacket (collar up of course). Johnnyt

Well we can surely agree to disagree but thats about as far as I'm willing to concede. Going to a different poolroom is an interesting concept. You make is sound as though they are up and down the street like coffee shops.

I don't give a rats ass what they (get the word THEY) listen to. It is when the music is inconsiderately loud and inflicted on everyone that it bothers me.

As far as their underwear showing .... Give me a break, its rude and purposely disrespectful, especially when women are present. There is no other rational excuse for it.

Where would you draw the line? When they stop wearing underwear and the crack of their butts becomes fashionable? or when they simply don't wear pants at all?

I understand perfectly. The issue is we all draw lines, we just place them differently.
