I personally am tired of seeing us get our butts kicked. The Mosconi Cup is a European based venture from Luke Riches and Matchroom Sports and the way the players are picked is a bit of a joke actually. I think the event is great and look forward to it every year but there has to be a better way to pick the players. My advice is to listen to me and just put my team in, my picks are Archer, Strickland, Morris, VanBoening, and Hatch or Deuel. If we had that team we cannot lose, the window will be wide open! :thumbup:

I really tire of reading posts that count Hatch among the American elite but not Dechaine.

If Hatch is a better player than Dechaine, why didn't he show it this past weekend at Turning Stone, where Mike whitewashed him 9-3. And if you need a bigger sample of their head-to-head play, why didn't Hatch get the better of Mike in their 2012 TAR match. Mike is a better player than Dennis, and he just keeps proving it over and over and over.

Yeah, choosing the team based on competitive performance sure is a joke. It would be much more logical to choose it based on favorite color.

If Morris, Deuel, and Strickland, the guys you think are deserving of being on the Mosconi Cup team really belong, let them go out and prove it by performing admirably on pool's biggest stages. Next week, they'll all get a chance to show their pedigree at Derby City, where lots and lots of money is up for grabs. These are truly exceptional players for sure, but if they want to be on our next Mosconi Cup team, they'll have to earn it just like everyone else.

The Mosconi Cup is a fantastic event, and Europe's pick isn't that much of a joke. The results confirms my statement. Europe came to London with one of the best teams in the history of the Mosconi Cup and beat the American team fair and square. I don't have much good to say about the European crowd, because they can be a little more respectfull to the American players.
Nick van den Berg and Niels Feijen are from 'my' country, and i am very proud of their game.

I hope the 2013 Mosconi Cup will be as much fun as the 2012 version.

I think the slow and deliberate players fare better in the Mosconi Cup then the fast and loose types. I think the atmosphere is so different that the players can't help but feel the pressure. For this reason, I don't think Morris is a good pick for the Mosconi Cup. I think this has also been a problem for Earl in the past (although I'm not certain what his MC record is). I think they try to play at that fast and loose pace and it ends up biting them.

I think for the most part all the European players are comfortable playing at this pace. I think it's clear that Archer and Van Boening are pretty comfortable playing like this. We need some others that do. I think this year will be pretty telling for a couple of the younger players. I have a hunch that come Mosconi Cup time Mike Dechaine will be up there in the rankings again, and will be deserving of another chance.

I don't think the selection criterias Matchroom goes by is a joke. We field a good, representative team every year.

But if there was a change in how teams were picked, how's this?

Have an M Cup committee for the US and for Europe. Maybe 3 to 5 caliber people. Have them choose a captain. Then let the captain choose the players. Or let the committee and the captain choose, with the captain having more strength of vote.

Your post got me curious, so I did a quick internet search. It appears that Hatch has a MC record of 7-3. Mike's was listed at 1-3. It would appear, strictly from a past performance record, that Hatch is better suited for the Mosconi Cup.
 
Even if i m *from the other side* :p

i really wonder, why John Schmidt haven t been called yet. Imo also a superstrong player-especially under pressure (imho).
 
I think the team should be the top 5 on the ranking list.
Support the players who support the game.

Let AZ vote for captain......wouldn't mind CJ again.

I guess stating it as a joke is a little harsh but with only a few events to base it off of with some players not going to those events because they are out in the middle of nowhere does not make it a great way in my opinion. I thought about a Captain being picked and choosing his team but then it might be his buddies instead of people really deserving of the spot. I just would like to see the best US players represent our country and some guys just do not hold up under Mosconi Cup pressure and others have shown great records playing. I guess I am just a little bitter about us getting our butts kicked 3 years in a row. :o

I agree with your team (Archer,Strickland,Morris,Van Boening, and Hatch).
The MC is a crazy environment! I think we need to bring some loud, excited, and fired up players to compete at York Hall. Archer, Hatch, Morris, and Strickland can really fire this team up. They have proven themselves already and it would make for a very exciting MC, and great for T.V.
 
You can leave Hatch out. Even Schmidt, Henny, JJ, Deuel is a better pick. Even M.D., even though he didn't shoot up to par this year, it was his 1st time over there playing in that enviorment. Dennis has been there and he did not play much better.

We should be able to use Alex P. Hes from North America.

But your other 4 are definitely our core foundation. If Corey ever gets dedicated to pool again then he is always going to be one of these 5, as he is by leap years the most talented U.S. player. He just does not have the interest he once did.

Racing to 9, the euros would be underdog, EVERY YEAR

I don't think i will add anything new to this discussion but right now Rodney ain't playing good enough for the Mosconi though i agree he is the right sorta character.

Dennis is the perfect player for the Mosconi and I think he will always be considered as long as he's playing half decent pool. If not then he will defo be a future captain.

Of course we all know why Earl isn't being selected. He would only ever be invited back if it became dull

Too many I think's, not enough supporting evidence.

You have to place well and play well during the year to make the team, I would put even money on Strickland to beat any euro with his fast and loose style.

SVB is the most talented US player by far. Check out his record the last four years, no one is even close.
 
Nice post Lenny. I am also sick of us not putting our top tier players out for our team. Strick-nine is always great for the team. He may be loose but when the heat is on, he gets through those tough racks that some of the other US players have dogged.

They would probably be asking the same question Lenny is asking if they would have lost. Why isn't Mika and Thorsten and Ralf on the team...this selection process sucks!!!
