but i never seen the hustler yet.
is this the reason i didnt like the ending? i wanted him to play tom cruise at the end and beat him sooooo frikkin bad!!!
what was the point of them ending the movie like that? i would understand if the color of money 2 came out or something.
or were they trying to steer the pool crowd away from the hustling scene and fix the damage they created with the hustle movie?

If you liked 'The Color of Money' you will enjoy the Hustler. It's in a different time and most say is the best pool movie yet to date.

Yeah, they kind of left the door open for a sequel but at the same time, in "The Hustler" Eddie's pool career was taken away from him. The scene at the end of TCOM ending it with "I'm back" was pretty cool. It also left it out there for you to decide if he won or not......which I think he did.

That would be the typical Hollywood ending and pretty boring IMO. The movie left people unsure of how it was going to turn out. Only that Fast Eddie was indeed back and as he said, if he did not win there, which he might not have he would be playing him again, and again, and eventually Fast Eddie would win, and I am unsure if Vince had the heart to come back and start winning again once Eddie had him beat.

But I love the ending as it is. Sure if Eddie smokes him then the movie ends you are like WEEEEEE!!! now what? Instead it leaves you thinking about it and the way it might have all went down.

I would love a sequel to The Color. But without Newman, I just don't think Cruse could do it justice.

Bingo! The way it ended was perfect as far as I'm concerned. You knew that Fast Eddie was back and no matter what, he was gonna hound Vince until he could kick his arse regularly. Even if it was a long road, like his come back after getting glasses and losing to grandma while he re-learned the game, you knew that eventually he was gonna kick Vince's butt! Doesn't even matter if it was that match at the end of the movie, he was gonna eventually get the upper hand. :)

In a way, I think the point of the movie is that fast eddie has won something just by his comeback. He got burned badly by pool, enough to quit the game he loves for decades. And he got hustled and almost quit again. But he found something that convinced him to pick up a cue again and he's back to doing what he loves. Win or lose he's lucky, and you just know he's gonna keep playing until he goes blind or his arms fall off.

I would love a sequel to The Color. But without Newman, I just don't think Cruse could do it justice.

I don't know if people will see this as too cute, but having cruise as the old guy who takes some cocky young new guy under his wing would be good. And we can see how vince finally learned (or failed to learn) all those lessons about proper hustling. Maybe the movie can just be about a grown up older vince who never wins another tournament and quietly robs everyone :P

Read the book. The movie is so bad it's an insult to pool. Cartoon characterization and a zero imagination plotline that has nothing to do with the novel. Every shot is either a simple stop shot or a ridiculous combo. Scorsese's worst movie and an insult to Tevis. The Hustler is way better. A very decent attempt at making a movie out of the original book.

A pool movie couldn't afford Tom Cruise any more.

BTW, being a child of the 80s, I saw COM before the Hustler. Love them both.

no wait !

a fatherless son of vincent hooks up with an older funnier wiser Grady Seasons.

Keith get's another great part !

Do it !

Just watched "The Color of Money" for the 1st time, and have never seen "The Hustler"...

I think you may have just forfeited your player's card!:p

So far as pool related movies, I don't think anything could top "The Hustler". COM didn't even come close.

COM is a good movie....The Hustler is a GREAT movie. The characters portrayed by Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason in The Hustler are worlds better than COM. IMO. Jackie Gleason was an absolute master in his role. Rent the movie tonight. It is black & white, but it is great.

I'm right with you on this one.
Tom Cruise couldn't give credit to a jelly doughnut, much less play the part of a pool player. Newman was a great actor, but his role in this film was sub par because it was a sub par movie. 'The Hustler' was by far the best for all the reasons we've so far heard, along with credit to Jackie Gleason (the great one), George C. Scott (Patton for heavens sake), and Piper Laurie (a hottie of her day).

i think it's safe to say that the COM was more of a savior movie than a great movie !

Creedo nailed it...the movie was about Eddie finding the competitive spirit again. The result of that single set at the end of the movie wasn't the point, it was that Eddie had found his focus again. Watching the Hustler would help that make sense.

FWIW, I ignore arguments about which movie was better and all that. Instead, I appreciate the movies for what they meant to the game in general. Each movie ignited a decade-long (or more) fever for pool. The Hustler ignited pool from mid-60's to the mid-70's. The COM ignited pool from the late-80's to the late-90's. WHERE'S OUR NEXT IGNITION???? It's long over due.

The Color of Money did one thing: give Newman the Oscar for his portrayal of "Fast Eddie" Felson which he should have won in '61. The Hustler is a far superior movie on every level. Better cast, better story line and more authentic. In The Color of Money, towards the end at the tournament, Vincent plays position for a bank??? That never happens in a real world 9 Ball tourney. Nice expert, technical advisor work "Machine Gun".

You need to watch the "Hustler" to understand. Not wanting to give away how it ended it is hard to explain. It would even be confusing at the start of COM if you didn't see the "Hustler". The ending was that Fast Eddie was back into doing what he loved and had a passion for... Playing pool.
