What do the Top Players in the World AIM at?

There is an article published in one of the printed pool magazines answering your exact question from the TOP players of the time the article was written (mid 90s I believe). The article has been scanned and is online. I don't have the link, but I'm sure someone here does.

A 2 sentence summary of the article from my own memory in my own words is:
Few, if any, of the pros interviewed aim the same way. Many of the pros can't describe how they aim.

Pretty sure THIS is what you are talking about.

Article looks like this.

It doesen't surprise me that this thread (AIMING no less) hasn't had any resposes for over 2 hours. After all, what could the Miz, CJ, Hopkins, Rempe, Ray Martin, and other top pros know about aiming?. Johnnyt

Yes, thats the one. Thanks for the link.
So did everyone read it? Any questions? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

I'm going to bookmark that one. It actually does a pretty good job explaining how important visualization is to shotmaking.

I read the whole thing.....Interesting I just hope I don't turn into a robot when I go into play like I normally do after I read things like that.

I find it interesting you had that reaction to the article. My reaction is that the article is complete chaos. I don't mean that in a negative way, I think it was even intended that way. What is chaotic is the information from the pros. Its all over the map. The conclusion I draw from this wildly diverging information is that aiming systems are.... (You'll have to wait until the next part of the article is published for the answer)

its too bad that you can't get a straight reply ,i am sure you have much to offer on the forum,i hope that the tactless replies don't run you off

welcome to az

Billy, Don't mean to hijack your thread but I thought you may get a chuckle out of this. You probably don't remember me, but we met once about 15 years ago at the Chicago Billiards Cafe. I was on my way to Minneapolis to pick up my CNC machine. I hit Chicago near rush hour and decided to stop and wait til the rush hour traffic passed. You were showing Deno, who I knew from the internet, a shot on the pool table next to the counter where I was getting some coffee. When I heard Deno's name I struck up a conversation because we hadn't met in person at that point. Deno told me in confidence that you were the top 3C player around.

I owned a poolroom in Cincinnati and also made cues. One of my customers who played on our 3C table pretty much, Bucky Bell, made a comment that he'd play any pool player, 3C for cash. I said OK Bucky, I'll take yopu to Chicago and take you up on that. He asked who he had to play. I told him Billy Smith. He kind of went white in the face and said you're trying to put me in a trap! Shit, he's the best American 3C player in the world! I said I didn't know, I only saw him shoot on a pool table! LOL I just thought you might get a kick out of that, but I was wanting to put you in the box with him and see you play 3C.

well here is what i do....and it aint in no book

bill if its any help at all i'll tell you that i aim at the mirror image of the contact point....its always there, i don't have to imagine it, no ghost ball or anything like that.

its the only aiming system i know of that you don't have to imagine any arbitrary points....(you know like the reasons many players like centennial balls over the others, b/c they have more points to aim on)

i don't need any extra points to aim at....by the physics of the game the table and balls literally "show" you where the hit point is....well at least the mirror image of it.

being that mirror image is right b/h the original contact point....i just aim at the mirror image and it takes me straight into the real contact point....

i use this on I'd say 95% of my shots, excluding banks, kicks, straight ins and close to 90º cuts

I could teach a jelly fish to make balls with this method.....i showed it to a few beginners and a couple solid players and the better players could see the advantage, but the beginners were very much helped as it helped them to understand the physics of the shot and better know to what they were looking for in regards to where to hit the ball to make the shot...

Can you put your method into a diagram. Keeb? I am sure many would like to see how this looks.

thoust asketh and shalt receiveth.......

I'm very sure all of you would.....but that would take time.....

but since I love you guys and get so much praise for doing so little I'm going to take the time over the next few days and draw up the aiming method....

I'm supposed to be heading over to Houston to visit with asmember (mnorwood) marcus to film some instructional stuff for his youtube site user "forcefollow"....

i was going to save it for release there but i'll see what i can do on paper in the mean time.

I have book and DVD, IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D

Bill Smith "Mr3Cushion"

OK, so why not give us a taste? Certainly, if you have a book AND a DVD out, you can give us this little nugget of information about how the top 3C players aim, so that we may judge the potential value of your wares. Udderwise, your statement remains a dubious and unsubstantiated claim and there are enough of those around here on aiming systems already.

For you LOU; NOTHING is FREE in life.:sorry:

P.S. BTW this thread was about finding out how some TOP players aim at when trying to pocket a ball, not what I or other TOP 3c players do. DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. "What do the TOP Players in the WORLD AIM at?"

Bill, with all due respect, I'm not sure how many people here know this. I sure don't! And, as has been said, about the only top player to post here is John Schmidt. If the top players haven't shared that information with someone here then this isn't the place to ask.
I'm glad to see you here, I've heard of you for years.
Sherm, the name Bucky Bell is one I haven't heard in years!
