What does it take to become a Champion?

True Champion

I was just wondering what everyones idea of '' what it takes to be a champion '' was?
Could everyone give some experiences they have been going through as they are on thier way to being a true championship player.....

You've chased John away, now. Nice job. I think most of us would rather hear from him than you. Give it up already.

John is still around, he has just swapped to PM's. He tried to trap me into a match with Parica this evening. If that is any indication of his intelligence we haven't lost much. However he pretty much said he would be back under an assumed name or handle.

Why does that show a lack of intelligence, Parica should be a lock with a person of your extra ordinary talents. He's an older person like yourself, you should walk all over him....afterall, you're one of the greatest players that ever lived! Hell, you can probably spot him the six ball right? Archer had no chance, I'm sure that Parica, being one of those funsy tournament players will fold like a wet dollar bill.

jealous?

Jealousy is such an ugly thing!

You are beating a dead horse.

This nature versus nurture debate has been going on for centuries with no resolution.

Genetics accounts for some talents. Training for others.

I doubt it. He'll probably be back when he needs backing again. IMO

Somebody got a sweet deal....John was a good bet to at least come out in the money...so putting up $1500 wasn't a big risk & then splitting 40k..how sweet is that ? minimum risk of acual case money with a chance at that much money...wish i'd of had the chance 1st.

Absolutely true.

All the more reason to show appreciation rather than seriously insult and disrespect his fan base? These are the same group of people that he solicits to support his videos, and back an occasional tournaments?

He receives more respect, admiration, financial and moral support here than a few irrelevent disagreements can possibly erase. IMO.

Just doesn't seem right to me.

John's just high strung !

John is really cool to be around in person...I think he's just high strung...It's easy to take things out of context on the computer...I've done it myself on several occassions...He wears his heart on his sleave like alot of us...not saying I agree 100% with any of the posters but 100% understand all of the posters views.

Your right about that. I will go as far to say that he is probably one of the most approachable pro players out there.

you are right about my speed

Hardly, I'm already convinced your at most shortstop, if that.

You are correct about my speed, I'm not even a shortstop at the moment. Of course I define a shortstop as somebody that can beat anyone in the world on the shortstop's home turf on a given day. Not everyday, sometimes. There is a huge difference there that you don't seem able to accept.

Shortstop is all I have ever claimed to be and all I ever needed to be to make a good living out of pool when a recession bit my other sources of income in the ass.

You seem awful skeptical of what a shortstop can do so here is a quote from your hero, John Schmidt, written earlier today: "you maybe could have played me 9ball on a bartable in your prime.there is 500 guys in usa that can play me 9ball on bartable even." I'm not responsible for spelling or grammar, that is a cut and paste. 500 guys includes a lot of shortstops.

As for running John off, if you look at our posts you will see that I simply sent back the same thing he dished out. If he can't take it he shouldn't dish it out. I treat everyone the way they treat me and give the benefit of doubt to most people until they leave no doubt.

I had to go back and see who actually started this bs, that happened
between John and the other two. John didn't start this dog fight. He was
very polite and to the point, and most of all, he was right. I guess some
people don't like when someone tells them how it is.

Hu, you could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or just another 3 ball runner. There's three just like you down at my local pool hall right now, talking about busting all the champions back in the day. Frankly, I don't care, nor does anyone else.

As for John being my hero, well, maybe. Anyone that can run 400 balls on two separate occasions sits pretty high on my list of most admired. John expressed an opinion on this thread that holds weight for me. He's been a champion in many disciplines included straight pool, nine ball, and one pocket. He was also a feared road player years before he came on the tournament scene. If he sounds arrogant, it's probably because it's difficult to talk about himself or express opinion without mentioning some pretty impressive accomplishments. He is, with out any doubt, the real deal.

You and me Hu, where just a couple of guys that probably play pretty good pool. Maybe even some wins over top pros now and then. We're both entitled to our opinion, but I think John's opinion weighs a little more (at least on the subject of "Champion").

Great answer...............

Determination

Dedication

Devotion

Desire

Discipline

Drive

Dreams

Put yourself in the company of Champions...
Play with them as often as you can..
As long as you can...
As affordable as you can...

And don't be afraid to open your mouth and ask for help and advice...

Good luck to you...

Mr. J. :-)

Hi there Mr J,

Youve got it right. This is the outline. A book for each category and you'd have it.

Sounds like you've been there if not in pool in some other field. it's all the same.

Good advice.........Geno...............

They are still around today. I know one guy who I would back in a heartbeat against any pro, and outside of a few of his friends, and quite a few of his victims, nobody would know him if he walked through the front door. I haven't seen every match he has played, and I'm sure it happens, but I have never seen him lose a match.

Steve

Ok fine, I'll give this unknown the call 8.

hmmm.. (smacking myself for reading all 20 some pages)

I don't see what some people can't state their opinion and maybe take a few posts to clarify it, but then move on after that. Who the hell wants to read the same material, just worded slightly different, over and over for 20 pages?

C'mon people, if the needle is stuck on the record, give it a push, so it can play something different.

I haven't had a signature since I got here, not much into all that junk, but I did respect one line enough to think I might sport it for a bit.

i could be an internet darling and always say the right thing but honestly i call it how i see it.
Anyways, my opinion.... some/most champions are born with those special qualities, mentally and physically, that make them champions. Most other people can slave all their life to achieve what others can achieve in months/years. Some people are great at anything they do with minimum effort. Doesn't mean some people can't achieve champion status by working their ass off for years and years, just means that most champions in any sport/game, were prodigy's in some sense of the word AND possess the mental concentration and focus and disdain for losing, it takes to play at the highest level.

BTW, who can't see highrun26 or whatever it was, is a reincarnation of John? geez... it's not many people that never use a capital letter:grin:
