Just out of curiosity? From what I read around here, they are always synonymous with a "monster hit".

Tad Kohara
Judd Fuller
Pete Tascarella
Joe Gold
Eric Crisp
Pat Diveney

I can only speak for myself, but the wait is usually a few years. There's several factors that determine the time. First is the time I actually have to work on cues, which isn't much because i'm a full time dad with a military wife who is deployed a lot. Second would be when the cue was ordered. I'm getting into the cues that were ordered in 02' & 03" right now. Next would be complexity of design. Plain janes are pretty easy & require only wood curing, and with this comes the variance of cure time for specific woods. For instance, birdseye maple can be used safely in a cue several years earlier than snakewood. More complex designs take longer, especially for me who has no high tech equipment. Digital calipers are the highest tech tool I have. Lastly would be interest in the project. I don't want to touch a cue i'm not interested in working on at the moment. My best work comes when I genuinely want to & enjoy working on the cue. Combine all of these factors together & it makes me a pretty slow builder for the most part. Money isn't my motive, so speed & specific protocal are not priorities. I build cues because I enjoy the challenge of building a great playing cue with some sort of artistic expression, whether it be naturally occuring grain design, points & rings & splices, or a combination of the two. Selling them makes room for new ones to be born, and pays for my supplies & utilities. Sometimes I get enough extra to take mamma out to dinner & a movie. If it ever becomes a neccesity or feels like a job, i'll just quit doing it. I have fun with it & that's my motive. I don't want to make a lot from it, just want it to support itself. It's sometimes tough for buyers to grasp or understand my logic because they already have an idea of what dealing with cuemakers is supposed to be like, and they expect things to be on time & me kissing their ass because they are the customer. They don't understand i'm building the cue for me, my fun time, & they get the bennefit of buying it when it's done, when i'm done. Most people are human & understand that. Some are not, no big deal. There's lots of other builders they can go to, or they can wait. No matter to me. I don't mean to sound arrogant, because that's not the case at all. I just don't make cues a priority in my life. It's a fun thing for me, like other guys play golf or watch football, I build cues. So I don't sweat the "wait list" or let anybody stress me out by nagging. I have fun.

So anyway, that's my long winded answer to the question. The short answer is there's no average. It's continuously getting longer. I likely will never openly accept orders again. I have more than enough to keep me occupied until I simply don't care to look at cues anymore. I accept a very few orders I am very interested in building, but aside from that i'll never open for orders again. The guys who ordered early have shorter waits & guys who ordered closer to my closing of orders will have the longest wait. So in essence, there's no real way of estimating a wait. I never got into cues expecting or even wanting to be where I am. It just kinda happened. I'll enjoy the ride while it lasts, but won't cry when it's done.

Tad Kohara - Forever.
Judd Fuller - Almost Forever.
Pete Tascarella - Yeah Right, aka life + 10.
Joe Gold - Not as long as Tascarella.
Eric Crisp - Compared to the above, really fast.
Pat Diveney - About 2 weeks longer than Crisp.
;)

Try to find one on the secondary market - it'll take a LONG time off the wait. And if you really want to wait a while, get in line with Joel Hercek.

eric crisp builds the best looking plain jane cues, his designs and the grain of the wood is stellar.Look a the examples on the forum,if yur looking for a plain Jane style Leon sly build great looking cu and they ply a ton also

I don't think I could order a cue and wait any longer than 1 year.

I have recently ordered a custom cue and the cuemaker (whose name I will hold back for now) I am dealing with is not only top notch but is nothing like poster qbilder describes of himself. I have received email updates, pics of the cue through the stages, phone calls and a quick, intelligent response to any questions or concerns I have had. Once the cue is complete, I am going to ask the builders permission and post a nice thread of all the replies, pics, etc that he has sent. I think it will be an eye opener for many a cuemaker to see on how to treat a customer, as well as for the customer's to see that there are cuemakers out there that understand that the customer is also important.

In That Respective List, I Own Cues From 3 Of The Makers.......tad, Joe Gold, And Eric Crisp,,,,,

Not Being A ''waiting List '' Person , As I Have No Patience , I Bought All On The Secondary Secene Out There,,,

The One That Superceeds The Rest Consistently Are All My ''eric Crisp '' Cues,,,,

He'de Be The Only Cue Maker I Would Actually Wait For And Well Worth The Wait, But Again, I'de Look To Pick One Up On The Secondary Market,,,,good Luck,,,,,!!

if you want a great cue in a reasonable time period, and a class act to deal with on every aspect, i suggest keith josey. you cant find a better cue or a better person.

The older we get the harder it is to wait years for a new cue. I'd like to read a thread about the cue maker you are dealing with and there are a number of cue makers building cues today who won't make you wait years to get a cue.

i respect what watchez is doing holding back until he gets his cue and asks permission from the builder but i have been saying for a while that i chose dick neighbors out of cincy. his cues are reported to have a monster hit. mine is due here today or tomorow and i will put a review up when i get it. there is a pic in another thread i started if you want to see his work (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=114467&page=3), and the wait time was less than six months from design to delivery. the price was more than fair and i got emails and pictures every couple of weeks to let me know the progress. i couldn't even get dennis searing to email me back and i have heard the wait is pretty long for a tascarella - those were the other two i really wanted. and i still might give mr. tascarella a call, i just got scared off by the wait times people posted here and haven't called him yet.

For those of you who don't know, poster "qbilder" (above) is Eric Crisp. I'd love to have one of his cues, and if I ever do it will be on the secondary market. I have a cue ordered from Kerry Zeiler (Zylr Cues) which I ordered in 01/06. At that time, Kerry said it would be three years to deliver. I spoke with him recently and learned that he has had some medical problems which have slowed his production down, and he could not tell me when he could deliver my cue, so I'll just be patient and when it comes I'll have it, if I'm still alive.

You made a good choice calling Dickie. He is a great guy and his cues play top notch.

You won't go wrong with Dickie. He's a top notch builder with solid work ethics. Nice guy, too. If I were to ever make cuebuilding a real job that I depended on, i'd model my practices after Dick's. Good choice.
