What's the Best Way to Select the Next US Mosconi Team?

I have to agree with Celtic.
I watched some of that Chinese 8-ball tourney and I thought it was very professional and well done. World class players playing 8-ball on super tough tables is very fun to watch and I like that the rules allow for very little slop and help ensure that every player has to play at their absolute best to win. The players are presented and treated as champions and they themselves dress, play, behave as champions as well.

Just as in the Ryder Cup you pick a qualified captain. The captain has two captain picks it only stands to reason his picks may be both a friend but also a great player. You have 6 players total and just as a previous post of mine said you must have it where someone can sit out . Everyone should not have to play everyday just like the Ryder Cup does. Dont start out with every player rotating on the first match as they now do. Have an entry introducing all the players then play as they now do singles doubles ect. The second day so as to ensure it happens play five singles matches and then the third day as they now do mix it up.

Plus they would probably pick Archer and we know how that team would turn out. We would get Archer, Putnam, Charlie, Rodney, and SVB would be the rogue odd man out of the inner circle that they simply could not explain not adding to the team.

Even if you pick someone that is more of a rogue as the captain they would be under huge pressure to bend to the will of pro pool in the USA and put Archer on the team or else face the repercussions of the players associations, ect... And once Archer is on the team I cannot fathom he would not be putting pressure on the captain for the other choices.

Pool in America is WAY too political at this point to let captains choose.

I couldn't agree more with the above post. I'm glad someone else doesn't have his eyes closed. Johnnyt

My advice to them is to let Shane pick the Captain and the Team

us only tournament, top player is captain, let the captain pick the team...................or top finishers are the team.

My advice to them is to let Shane pick the Captain and the Team since he's the #1 player....this would solve ALL the problems, and the USA would probably have a great chance to win.

Pick the Captain, then let him pick the team.

I'm not far from this line of thinking but I must add one more step.

Pick the captain in January prior to the Derby City Classic.

Require that the captain clearly define the criteria for making the team prior to the Derby City Classic and use these criteria for selection of the top four spots. Dismiss the captain and replace them if they fail to do so.

Let Matchroom pick a wildcard.

In other words, get the politics out of the process to the greatest extent possible and let the cream rise to the top.

The fact is the #1 player always has the most pull and is therefore responsible

I agree 100%.

The fact is the #1 player always has the most pull and is therefore responsible for how things are behind the scenes. Shane would probably say he influenced me into the Captain position for the 2012 Mosconi Cup.......although I'm not so sure about 2013.

I would feel comfortable with him picking the entire team, and declare what that system will be.....I believe he would want to use a points system based on certain tournaments.

We could actually make a reality show purely out of the journey our intrepid white-ball wizards take to MC time. The glamour and pageantry, the whining and moaning...:::sigh::: the vacant stares of slack-jawed amazement when people find themselves taken a-back that Earl said something untoward to passers-by while strapping weights to his creaking frame. Johnny Archer looking pedantic and lethal before the packed house. The teeming masses alight in ecstasy as he unpacks his "The Scorpion" Cues. (I actually like his playing cue).

I think it has WiN written all over it. I'd love it if they got the 18 yr old robot Landon or Landon Shuffet to get on the team. He would be like the Wesley Crusher of the pool world. Hated by all humanity for no other reason than he is young and accomplished. I'd hate his guts too right along with everyone else and imagine him disintegrating on national television, breaking down sobbing under the pressure and Earl would come over to help console the poor lad, but his noble gesture would come out all wrong and it just ends up looking like he was fondling the young man, ultimately to be branded a predator for the remainder of his life..........

anyways...

Mebbe they should just draw straws.

Isn't this kind of like asking "who do we draft for the patriots next year"?
Who's we, kemosabe?
Matchroom's just gonna do what it wants.

Or does someone actually have the ear of matchroom?
You figure they read AZ?

It's their nickel.

I say, let Matchroom pick the captain and the team.

I agree... I also really don't care very much in that

1. It is a Matchroom creation
2. It is a Matchroom product produced and sold over seas.. not that they have not tried here... its just that no one cares to cover it (in any meaningful way)
3. Other than jumping from server to server to find a stream there is little or no access in the US.
4. Curling gets more coverage in the USA than this ...

....or maybe one of the dart guys could throw at a spinning wheel with the players names. Whatever he hits is the team AND some dart (unknown to him) is designated the "captain dart"... :groucho:

How about a qualifying point system that's open so that everybody has the same opportunity to try for it? It's for a US team, so naturally they would be US events. Somebody does better in an event outside of the US? Doesn't count. Need to be able to win when it counts. There was one player that looked to be a lock this year that got hosed. I wonder if he'll get an apology.

Good idea and it should only include events in the US which the top players enter with one wild card pick. If you let the team captain pick the team it leaves it wide open to "business".

"food for thought," at the end of the day they are just words...

I agree, it's really none of our business who they choose. Like anything else, it's just "food for thought," and at the end of the day they are just words.........now back to what chalk is best...... MASTERS is #1 :D

Number One on the Job Specification of Mosconi Cup US Coach/Manager:

Must believe that my team can and will win. That is the object of a contest. It is not hoping to lose LESS BADLY.

It is not the winning that matters it is the taking part - Bullshit.

It is the Winners that get the prizes and the perks. Losers make their own arrangements
IMO, the words winners and losers shoule be dropped. There should be the attiude of winners as having been chosen.
IN my old job we used the mange activities and let the results fall where they may. IN other words, do not mange results, manage activities and be prepared.
I think the coach or captain is crucial having people skills and the abitlity ro motivate. Even the greatest have bad dys and need motivation. JUst ask the 49ers and how they handeled the Packers in the ICe Bowl.
I feel careful thougt should go into the captain and one who has been in many battles. ONe not considered or maentioned yet is Billy Incordona. I think he could rough them up and setle them down.
BUt, no way do I feel one person should select the team. I would like to see a selection comittee and some ahrp minds.
