When you play a road player......

I think if ur a cash player in ur pool hall and a "stranger" comes in looking to gamble cheap then jump on the opportunity. If he's spreading corn then atleast you are the first to win some money and not get get suckered.

If he's just a weak player with the need to gamble then u beat all the nits to the fish.

Too many players are locksmiths and cowards in their ability that they lose sight of prime chances to make and save money playing pool.

Being smart and being scared are two totally different things when ur talking about pool. And now you have so many of the higher level players in pool halls not understanding the difference that younger less skilled players learn the same approach. Hence why there is less action in pool rooms.

Watch Earl Strickland's documentary on YouTube. Then you'll realize what heart is made of.

There's a line in pool hall junkies "you've been playing bums for so long you became a bum yourself"

if you're going to be road player, you're there to do just that. take everybodies dough and say see ya suckas next time !! if nobody knows him, then he's there to play.

just 4 games ... i wouldn't adjust the spot because of the concerns you and others have posted. 4 games is just a hiccup. he might not even be a road player, he could be a "want-2-be" but u would need more than 4 games to figure that out or some good intelligence from your cohorts. i can't count the times i lost 4-5 games in a row and came back to thump the competition.

i used to play road players all the time but i almost always made them give up the weight; after all they profess to take on all comers so make them earn their reputation.

I'm trying to figure out why a roadman would use you as bait.
You play good your not a sailor and you know the right people to ask.
If you get backed by deep pockets sometimes I could see that.
or if you are the brains of the operation down there they would want to give you bad Intel
Otherwise I think one of the last of the suckers stumbled up on you
Put 190 in the safe and spend the rest frivolously on pool time
Keep on keepin on brother

If big money guys are in the pool room but no one is playing the visiting player and you step up to play for $50 a game with a road player, and you win 4 games of one pocket in a row getting a spot. When he quits after four games and thanks you for the action, do you wonder if he is spreading a little corn around for $50 a game?

If he quits after losing 4 games in a row, how do you know if he wasn't laying down just a bit to bring the big larcenists in a little closer?

Would you adjust the spot the next time you play? I was wondering more about whether he was laying out a little corn, more so than adjusting the spot but anyway, chime in. Saw, you're invited too.

First of all, when he came in and played you on your table, that was a spot right there. Then he gave you weight. Then he realized you can play and one pocket is your game.

I think he just bit off a little too much! Maybe if we had a name and knew the spot.

more often than you'd think. . . .

IMO , thee is far to much empahsis placed n hustling stalling, etc. NOt very often do these things even work out or really even worth the time.
Lotta guys made a bit of money over the years.
With the best hustles, you'll never even know you got hustled.
"Not very often do these things even work out"??? Now THATS funny!

I don't intentionally put other guy's business in the street, especially on the forums. Sorry.

I see that there is a few different opinions and I don't believe any of them are wrong. We can never be positive about anything, especially after only 4 games and cheap money.

If the same guy comes back to me the next day and says his nose is open and he wants to play for three or four hundred a game, I think it would be corn that he spread. So far that hasn't happened.

Thanks everyone.

Maybe he merely wanted to gamble.....hmmmm?

Maybe he merely wanted to gamble playing one pocket, and his budget was $200.....'The Game is the Teacher'

This entire thread is why pool is so awesome. Gambling isnt shady or underhanded, it lends excitement and challenge to the whole experience, especially if you are a road player and REALLY need to not lose if you plan on eating or filling the tank up to get out of town.

Predators gotta eat.

4 games is really not enough to be a lemon..Unless he stalled all night and Yall played about ten hours worth..I'm not smart enough to lay eggs but if I was to do so it would be about 8-1000 worth..

Easy to have 'heart' when you play better than everyone else.

While you may never know what the players thoughts or plans are, I would think you just thank him also for the action and wait and watch what happens next.

If the players wants to play again and asks to adjust the spot I think you should make a small adjustment being that your up 4 games. Now if the original game was 10-7 adjusting to even is out of the question. Maybe adjusting to 10-8 or 9-7 is ok but nothing more than that.

There was a friend of yours, about your size, you knew you could count on if this guy went nuts. He nodded at me, and I knew he was going to stick around to make sure.

Plenty of games have 10k, 20k, or more in the middle, with lots on the rail, and not a worry in the house. In addition, no friends with Goodfella like nods are around. (If you haven't seen Goodfella's, watch Henry's wedding scene again and look at all the nodding going on around the tables.

Now if Ken posts, you know there is going to be drama over a stranger and a $20 game. Ken's gotta have his $20 8-ball Tushhog around, cause that's how he rolls. Yall better recognize.

Were you able to escape with the cash without anyone getting hurt or any thumbs being broken? If so, that's good.

There may be "plenty" of 10K and 20K games in your head. But in the real world they are few and far between.

I dont make any claims that arent true. I typically play for $5 game 9 ball, or $10 a game 1 pocket. I have played sets for $200, but that really is an exception. Does that make me nit? Whatever.

You appear to be a keyboard cowboy, or maybe a 12 year old with new 'puter that watches "The Hustler" and "Goodfellas" and uses them as a reference.

Even at one pocket, 4 games doesn't tell very much. The road player probably didn't show too much. Anybody who walks into a strange place and hands out weight, has to be better than that. Then again, who knows how much of his game JoeyA showed. Maybe he was over his head spotting Joey. If I knew he was a big money player I wouldnt give him anything back, spot wise. I'd wait first, see if he moves on to others and what he does with them. If he doesn't, make him earn the money back with the same game you did. Then play well, with his money....and force him to show you what he's got.

Note to self....new gambling strategy with Ken
Play bad, bump the bet after every loss, don't drink too much beer

Well I had never have it happen to me before or since.

I really got nervous, not about the money or anything like that but this guy was big, very big. I thought he either wouldnt pay or go nuts.

This happened in my hometown and there was a friend of mine about my size but I knew I could count on if this guy went nuts, he nodded at me and I knew he was going to stick around to make sure.

Just really strange.
