Who are the top five players in your state?

California is too big to breakdown a top five.

Come on Burt, they have world rankings (slightly larger than California). Go out on a limb and tell us whose best. You are being too nice, eliminate some of the dead wood.

I am not BankerBurt but I will give it a shot.

Rapheal Martinez
Amar Kang
Morro
Max Eberle (sp?)
Ernesto

Of course there are about 20-30 that can win any given race
playing nineball that are not in these 5.
Others not on Burts list that are in the south are
Dave Hemmah
Lori ( not sure on last name)
Marshall Jung
Arturo ( not sure on last name)
King Kong

Like Burt said though it is a big state that is divided. Its a true north and
south split. Someone should put together a north vs south
shootout event. Maybe 5-8 man teams and play different games. It could
be rotated every year from Hardtimes in Sac and the one in Bellflower.
Part of it for charity and have each team have to get their own sponsors.
Have it in conjuction with a JP tour event or a few days before or after.
just ramblin
Lots of good players in the state

I shall go out on the limb but only with no. Cal. players, and I must break the players into two games - 9-Ball & One-Pocket (the player's skill level varies dramatically on the list).

I also do like the north vs. the south idea. Although, I would have to do some serious odds making after determining who is on the the south team, before I would bet on the match (and the game format).

Here is my Northern California ranking -
9-Ball
1. Rafael Martinez
2. Billy Palmer
3. Amar Kang
4. Tony Chohan
5. George Michaels

One-Pocket
1. Billy Palmer
2. Rafael Martinez
3. Tony Chohan
4. Ronnie Allen
5. Chris MacDonald

This is just my opinion, which is slightly biased because I have played each of these players many times and in both disciplines, and the only one I have not won against is Rafael. So maybe a better match-up between the north and the south would be matching each player according to the teams vote of their own team's best player list.

Rafael Martinez is the best 9 ball player for sure.
I am surprised to see you have Billy Palmer ahead of Amar in 9ball and
ahead of Tony in 1 pocket. I was impressed with George Michaels game
in a few tournaments that I saw him play in.
I think it would be a good matchup between north and south. Better one
pocket players for sure up there.

alinco,

How about Kevin Bailey, haven't seen or heard about him in a couple of years now. Last time I saw him play he was hitting them pretty good.

Good call- last I saw, Kevin beat Parica getting 9-6 in Laurel, MD. They only had time for 2 or 3 sets...Don't think Jose won one.

That was about 1 year ago- I would also be interested in knowing what happened to him.

Kevin moved to Texas over the summer and was staying with Bo Roop down there (another Northern VA player). He was pretty heavy into the drugs at the time, and was starting to owe some people money I think. I didn't see the match with Parica, but Kevin told me the next day in Manassas that Jose gave him 10-6 and Kevin beat him 5 games at $200 a game before Parica quit.

That very night he told me about the previous day's session, he matched up with Shane Moore at Whetzel's and beat Shane out of nearly $2,000 (giving Shane the 7 & the breaks!). And Shane is no slouch. The funniest thing about it was that right after the first coin toss, Kevin comes up to me and asks to borrow $50 -- the amount of the first set they were playing for!!

BP9Ball,

God willing, hopefully he can straighten himself out!

Bloody hell, don't even mention him. He used to be phenomenal, he is now simply insane and can still have flashes of brilliance.

I dont know about the "better one pocket players for sure up there". I think Jose Parica, Tang Hoa, and Rich Grenier could take on there top three and me and about 10 other guys would take on numbers 4 and 5.

Ohio List

How about JR Gay and Ralph Carnes on the Ohio list?

Perhaps they don't play so much anymore?

JR clicked off Runs of over 200 and 300 in straight pool on consecutive days a few years back.

That's about the size of it. Jose wasn't hitting his best that night, but Kevin didn't seem to have too much trouble playing with the spot. He's a gentleman on and off the table and is one hell of a player.

By the way, I was in with Jose that night at Champions in Laurel, and when the set came to an end, they closed the pool room up for the night.

If he took things a little more seriously and yet managed to keep his cool he would still be great. I had to play the guy twice last year at the Canadian BCA 8-ball tourney. The guy was real loose and a shadow of his former self. He did go off in the second set I played him, never seen a person play 8-ball like that, he never got shape and never needed it cause he was just potting, kicking, and banking everything. I remember seeing him shoot in the early/mid 90's and his game back then was solid, real solid (back when he was considered top 5 in Canada for sure). That game is still in there I am sure, be cool to see it again.

Do you mean Brian Atchley?(sp)

It's Brian Atchley. He lives here where I live in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He has epileptic seizures and decided to quit playing around ten or twelve years ago. He is very religious and a commendable person.
