who is the best players in philly?

Back around 1981, there was a guy named Tom Golly from Reading, I believe. He won the collegiate national championship. Is he still around?

I think he is more from the Allentown area. I played him at Jordan Lanes in Allentown around 1984. Buzzy from Allentown was probably the top player from that Area back then and probably still is. Shadow (Mike) lived in Allentown then and Mike Miller is from around there too. Going up a little north from there is a different story....

In Reading there was Jimmy Matz and Ace. Jerry Rauenzahn lived in Reading back in those days.

Wow...great list here by Topcat1953. I'm feeling at home now----------------->

Jerry R. was unsure if he just wanted to stick with the bar boxes or play big tables too. I really miss the old days!

LOL. Josh has been in Philly rooms like 3 times a week since he was 12 or 14, until today. There are no rooms in Delaware.

Edit to add, I know Josh is from Delaware. But his pool time has probably been way more in PA, especially since almost every DE room closed up over 10 years ago. I guess the question comes down to how you define a player's "home", and is that different than their "pool home"?

Hopkins is before my time, but I believe it was the same case in the 70's and 80's. He played out of the Philly area rooms.

By responding with "LOL" doesn't change the fact that you dont know what you are talkin about. Gotta love the Interwebs.

Hopkins lived in north jersey. Like all top players in the area, he can show up daily in any room within a 1.5 hour drive in any direction (which covers from nyc to philly and anywhere inbetween. Obviously, you are not familiar with the area. The bottom line is that no one, including the philly guys, considrred him a philly player. Sorry.

As far as Josh, while he did spend some time hanging around Maidhof's room as a teen, its debatable if he would be called a philly guy. Once josh had a drivers license, he would be found anywhere between philly to d.c. i suppose you could call him a baltimore guy too.

Most of those mentioned so far are not from Philly, but Willie Mosconi and Jimmy Fusco certainly are.

Steve "Stevie Wonder" Dobrowolski. whose name appears on the list of 200+ ball runners in the 14.1 forum, is from the Philly area.

Any of you guys hear of russian kenny? A lot of people tell me he's the best currently, I'm not so sure tho, we played a race to five on a bar box and I won 5-4 . I'm a 7 in apa so I'm no slouch but I def don't consider myself good. Maybe he was laying down that day? Any how all the reponses are greatly appreciated!

Yes, Kenny is the current best. Especially if you catch him on a day where his hair is standing on edge like he put his finger in an electrical outlet. He never misses on those days.

Is there a Billy from Philly? We had a guy in Tulsa a few years ago that played good one-hole and could really stall. Last name started with a k.

?? Not sure if he is from philly, but looks the part!

Not sure about his 1p game either, but his 9b one had a bit of dog in it...right there at the end.

Its interesting how the "Greater Philadelphia Area" had an immensely rich history in world or national class players. Unfortunately, the game really died down in the area in the last 20 years. The last national or world class PROFESSIONAL player produced by Philly was Corey Deuel.

Yes, I know there are still LOTS of very good A and Open level players in the area, but they are all getting older now. Just a couple of guys under 30 who are Open class today.

Some dude named Darren lives in the Philly suburb of Allentown. As does AZ's own SpiderWeb.com.

I saw a young Hopkins torture The Miz for some cheese in '74 in a S Philly poolhall. Don't know if Miz was Philly based or not.

Allentown is nowhere near Philadelphia, perhaps 70 miles away.

Mizerak came from Perth Amboy, NJ, about 75 miles from Philadelphia, but only a half hour drive from NYC.

Hopkins came from Cranford, NJ, over 80 miles from Philadelphia, but only about 20-25 miles from NYC.

I would say as far as Straight Pool it goes hands down to Bob Maidhof...300+ runner in 14.1!

I believe as far as One Pocket goes Jafar Basheer (AKA Henry or Patcheye) is still around and playing...probably in his 80's by now!
