Who's Chris Bartrum's Traveling Buddy?

What part of "it's not perfect" did you not understand ?

The women at least have a TOUR. With a single governing body to talk to sponsors and promoters. It's called a base, a foundation upon which you build something larger.

You are right though, better to just denegrate it and ***** about things.

And for the 1000'th time when the hell have you ever heard ANYONE tell somebody "Be a pro pool player kid. You'll be rich." There has never been any money for non-top 5 players. Money isn't everything, if it was they could go work at Burger King like you suggest. There is something to be said for doing what you love.

Sure, the women have had a tour for a long time and been on TV way more than the men. But has their tour really grown much? Not really. They are still paying ESPN to televise their tournaments which equals break even business at best and their purses are still just as weak as they ever were. You're right, at least they have an organized tour. But what good is an organized tour if only 5 or so players can make a decent living?

I am friends a lot of pro players and none of them do it because they think they are going to be rich. They do it because they love the game... Above you said "There is something to be said for doing what you love". Then why do you have so much angst for road players doing what it takes to make a living playing the game they love? Are you salty because you got hustled in the past?

Your right, it worked out terrible for Kid Delicious.
There were a whole lot of points you left unaddressed. Why?

I know Brian, George, and Big Arm. I like everyone of them, I even like their stories of the "RV days" and the stuff they laid down. The topic has never come up of what my opinion is. But if my friend asked if I knew who someone was and a I answered and one of the above gave the whole "You're a nit, knocker" routine that a few on here have, you bet your ass I will tell them same thing. Why wouldn't I ?

The funny thing is all 3 of them own businesses now. Ask them what would happen if they ran their business with the same set of ethics and outlook as when they were on the road ? They might get over for awhile but they wouldn't last.

As far as Basivich, what exactly has worked out well for him ?

As several posters have pointed out. The whole undercover roadman thing is on its last legs if not dead already. The pool world has gotten too small. Sure a guy can grind in the bars, I personally wouldn't risk my life for $50 a game but if you wanna be all romantic and sh!t and live out your Fast Eddie fantasy have at it.

By one account there was over 42 million recreational pool players. Why do you think it is that pro pool has virtually no non industry sponsors? Could it be because of this whole lack of integrity? Everytime a non industry sponsor gets involved with pro pool they either end up embarrassed or screwed.(I am not blaming this on the players, but a sponsor doesn't care who or how they just know they got screwed) Guess what? No sponsor = no money.

I have no problem with road men. But whatever a person chooses to do with their life it does not justify dishonest behavior no matter how poorly or well it pays, or how much they love to do it.

As for being hustled..LOL. I learned long ago, before I really had anything to bet with, that to bet anything substantial with a stranger is foolish. So no I am not salty about being taken off, I am salty about the fact that people in the game I love, still make excuses for behavior they wouldn't tolerate from there doctor or police or mechanic because of some antiquated romantic notion of the road man.

How much money do you really think is out there to be won by hustling anyway? I mean really. Your nut is at least a $100 a day. $700 a week. $3000 a month. Unless you are sleeping in your car. Are you saying life as a road hustler is more rewarding than playing pro, and is the only resort for a player to make money? HUH?

Look at Jeanette Lee, if more people in the game worked as hard as she did at marketing both themselves and the game I really believe we would see some progress. Another thing, when you say "But what good is an organized tour if only 5 or so players can make a decent living?" you are basically saying all the work and effort the people behind the WPBA put forth to bring it about doesn't really matter. I disagree.

Exactly!
here's what I'm hearing from this whole thread:
<whiny voice> "The internet is making it too difficult for me to deceive people and maintain my unscrupulous lifestyle!"
I suppose if a hustler owned a legitimate business he'd whine and complain that customers could check with the BBB in order to avoid being ripped off by him.
That being said, if you want to hustle, then hustle. No one is telling you how to live your life. Just don't be surprised when your victims use whatever means they can to create an even playing field.

So where is everyone (the local players) anyhow? I know one of them is in Sacramento at the moment and another one is not feeling well. I was at Dr. Cue's last nite when Chris and Jason walked in, and they were having a hard time finding anyone to play (the place was rather devoid of any players).

Jason did play Chuckie, but I don't know the details.

Wonder why Chris didn't go down to Sacto, where all the players are right now. Seems like a better spot for him.

Just want to add one more comment to this thread. When Danny (Kid D.) went on the road, he beat a bunch of good players. Same for Steve Knight in the 90's when he went to Florida and Hawaii. And who has Shane being winning money from in the last two years. PLAYERS!

Who has Dennis O. and Ramil G. and Warren and Ronnie had to play to win the money over here. PLAYERS, not suckers. You think Ronnie Wiseman is playing a bunch of slouches when he is out doing his thing.

When my man Tang made some good scores several years back, He was giving Flyboy big weight and playing Santos even. Were these soft games? Hell no. I watched Ronnie win serious money many times. Who was he playing? Good players and giving them weight! Keith would play anyone on any table and bet all he had! Richie the same.

These guys did NOT go looking for soft action. They went looking for BIG action! Wherever the money was, you would find them. If they had to give up weight, so be it. Big money Pool has always been about matching up close and then playing good enough to take it off.

My point is that to win serious money at Pool, a player will have to match up with someone close to his speed, and find a way to get there. Or give up weight. The best money makers I've seen go looking for good players who will bet it up, with or without a backer. And that's the name of that game.

The only player I've seen in 40 years make big scores playing lesser players was Jack Cooney. And he was truly unique. The greatest Pool hustler of all time maybe.

God, I hate the internet.... Knock, knock! Who's there? Internet knockers in every freakin corner of the internet. What's wrong with pool? Good players have a much tougher time making money because they get knocked in forums like this! I never minded getting knocked by someone making a phone call but this internet snooping is brutal......................

How is the Internet snooping different than the telephone call or even the infamous black book record of how everyone plays?

Well I don't know if McWhorter is a nit or not and I don't really care if he is one or not.

But I do have to agree with you that his posts are getting old. It is entertaining when someone woofs at another in a genuine attempt to get a game but when nothing comes of it, the woofing was a waste of time for one and all.

funny story

a couple of years ago klatt and eric horleifson came and played in our weekly tourney in des moines, iowa. we knew who these guys were from the casino tour. champions but not baraks, boweman or vilmont speed on the bar table. anyway we have a weekly calcutta and of course they were some of the 1st picks in the blind and then somebody picks chris bartrum. now I know the name but not the face so I say he is not in the tourney and the guy said he is right there sitting!

Chris was smart enough to not get in the tourney and was playing a local player getting the 8 when he could have gave him the 6 out. funny stuff. he was outed by the caluctta when he snuck in and nobody knew him till one guy spoke up to buy him. he was a good sport about it and I offered to let him in the tourney even though we started the calcutta and he declined. should have played as 1st and the calcutta paid about 450 that week. not bad for a weekly tourney. races to 6 and 5. no handicap.

btw neither of those guys won the tourney. but I think that this was around the time boweman, baraks and other champions from the quad cities were making regular trips here to show us the differnce in quality of play.

Thanks everyone for your replies. FTR, I asked out of curiosity for myself, not for Mike. Mike hasn't been in the poolrooms they have been in much...he has been out playing tournaments, and is tired of pool and will be getting a 'real' job next week. I just got back from Canada tonight, from a women's team tournament (we won) and so have not seen this thread in the last few days.

I do know several of our friends have lost to these 2, but knowing their names hasn't really influenced anyone's decision to play. They knew they were good when they saw how they played!

I'm sorry that the ones who tried to help got lectures from those that wanted to protect the roadies' anonymity. :o

Here are some of my thoughts pertaining to this thread:
1) If an unknown comes into the pool room and wants to play someone I'll try and find out who he is and decide which way I want to bet.
2) If I know who the unknown is and he's trying to match up with someone I don't particularly like then I might talk to him and steer him the right way.
3) If he's trying to match up with people I know and like then I surely will knock his action.
4) So what if people are trying to find out how road players play? Why the hell would anyone jump up and play someone they don't know for a substantial amount of money anyway, unless they are idiots.
5) I know a lot of people do play road players without knowing who they are and that is fine also, the world needs suckers too.
6) Jamie Mcwhorter is an idiot. Corey is a friend and I would definitely bet or back him, but you have done nothing to further a game for him or better anyones image. Stop using all caps and refrain from making any more woofing posts.

In a nutshell I'll tell a story that happened a few years ago. Bruce B. and I went to Greenville and he got no pool action so I pitched a guy coins. The guy had recently inherited over $100,000 and every pool hustler and con man for hundreds of miles around were draining this guy as fast as he could lose it. I beat him out of $1000 and then we all went out drinking. He was extremely cool and ended up letting us stay at his place instead of us paying for a hotel room. A few months later at a tourney in Athens the same guy comes up to me and asks me how a certain player plays that wanted to gamble with him. Now, I don't know the better player that well and I had talked to the guy that inherited the money several times on the phone and at tournaments after the night I beat him pitching coins. I told him that he needed a lot more weight to play. The other guy got mad at me for knocking his action! I told him flat out, I hardly know you, and I consider the other guy a friend, so why the hell would I lie to him to make you money? He said because its what he does for a living. I told him to get another profession and to kiss my ass.

I think you need to reread what you originally posted. The person you quoted was named JOEY and that was the JOEY he was calling a moron not you.

To recap:
JOEY called McWoofer a nit.
McWoofer called JOEY a moron
I don't recall McWoofer calling JoeyA any names.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Are you suggesting that we have to actually READ the threads/posts and not simply make a drive by posting ? That's a novel idea.... imo :)

Tap, tap, tap. Your statements cut to the heart of the "debate." Why would we want to protect the identity of someone disguising it??? No reason I can think of offhand.
