Who's Chris Bartrum's Traveling Buddy?

I think you need to reread what you originally posted. The person you quoted was named JOEY and that was the JOEY he was calling a moron not you.

To recap:
JOEY called McWoofer a nit.
McWoofer called JOEY a moron
I don't recall McWoofer calling JoeyA any names.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You're right on all accounts.
I am almost a moron. LOL.
Apology to McWoofer for insinuating that he was a moron for calling me a moron. :o :D
JoeyA (Too many damned Joey's)

Tap, tap, tap. Your statements cut to the heart of the "debate." Why would we want to protect the identity of someone disguising it??? No reason I can think of offhand.

I may be wrong, but I think the answer to your question is that guys like McWoofer are looking for some sort of "honor among thieves". What turdboy doesn't realize is that us honest players AREN'T thieves and couldn't care less about supporting the "livelihood" of the ethically challenged.

I wish I still played pool, I would drive to ohio just to shut McWhorter up or at least stop him from using caps. The cap lock button is to the left.

Yes sir.

If anyone I know comes up to me and asks how someone plays, I'm gonna tell them the truth. Unless I'm not sure how the game should be, and then thats what I'll tell them. If some guy I barely know is trying to take off someone I consider a friend, you can bett all you can get your hands on that I will knock it. If I lie to someone I consider a friend, so they can support someone who wants to play pool for a living, I might as well quit working and go back to sneaking in the dive bars and basically stealing from the non-players. I have a pretty good reputation for being an honest person and I sure as hell ain't gonna lose that for someone who's too lazy to work or at least match up fairly. Just my opinion. Sam:)

Getting knocked is part of pool

Neil said:
I don't know. I guess I feel differently than most about this. I have had my action knocked enough that I don't like it. So I try not to knock anybody elses.

If asked, I won't lie about it. If I think the game is way out of balance, and asked, I will say you need more weight. But I'm not about to set up the game for someone unless they both know each other and one is being ridiculous. I just tell them to get up and find out. That's how you learn. You have to learn to get some 'canoles'. If your'e scared, don't play.

You never know when the underdog might pull out an 'A' game and the better player be off. Sometimes beating a better player and outrunning the nuts is all it takes to get to the next level by thereby believing in yourself.

I figure it's his money. It's up to him how he spends it, not me.

But on the other hand, if I see a friend getting 'raped' and doesn't know it because the other guy is a good hustler, I will let him know that he can't win.

It has happened to everyone who ever played good enough to lay down. I won't say I never played below my speed to keep someone playing, I have. Back in the early 80's, I played music and pool. If I wasn't doing one, I was out doing the other, and making good money for a young single guy. I played on my own money almost every time I gambled. I went to other towns and just walked in asking to play cheap sets. If I thought I couldn't win, I quit and found someone else to play. If it was a mismatch, and the guys buddy came in and told him, I didn't get mad.
Most of the older guys I know who played really good pool and was making a decent living at it, now have real jobs. Most end up owning some kind of business. One of my friends now sells insurance. He said it's just like hustling pool, but no-one walks up and knocks your action. There comes a time when you have to face reality. Pool is a nice profession, as long as you have some other kind of income to pay all your expenses.

My experience.....

My experience has been, that if someone needs to "check out" another player, they shouldn't play. They are simply looking for some support or re-inforcement in their decision "not" to play.

The winners that I have been associated with would play anybody, because they really thought that they were the best!

Yeah, but there are many stories of famous "losers" who would play anyone as well. Just because they'll play anyone doesn't mean they are automatically a winner, or will ever be a winner.

And PAleeze... Many of the old time champions would get as much info as possible on their opponents as well. That's why jamborees had to move from one place to another, because everyone communicated about how everyone played, and this served to kill action a little.

Like it or not, nobody likes losing big amounts of money if they can find out how their opponents play. Just because they are checking up on how an oonent plays, doesn't mean they won't play if the other person is better.

If a road player comes in and is prepared to play player "A" even, but in reality can give player "A" the 5 out and the breaks, do you have a problem with player "A" finding out the road player is a champion, and they negotiate the 7 out and the breaks?

That's all the people on here want, is to cut down on the amount of money that local players get robbed for. Pool is a fun game, and trust me, people are not going to stop playing for money. If speeds are accurately clocked almost immediately, all it's going to do is bring the games closer to even.

What's wrong with that?

I don't know you Neil, but we line up along the same side of the fence on this one. If you can play, I say get up there and see what the other guy has got. And if a friend asks me about playing someone who is a much stronger player, I may ask him how much weight he is getting. If it's enough, I'll say okay. And if it's not, I may say something like "tough game". Then he can figure it out. Oh, and one other thing. If he doesn't ask me, I don't offer. He'll figure it out for himself.

The few times in my life I got hustled, I knew real quick I was up against it. I lost a couple of hundred to Larry Lisciotti and maybe $300 to Wade Crane before I pulled up. I asked Larry for 9-7 and told him we could bet another 200. He declined. As for Wade, I had a feeling he played way too strong. We were playing $50 9-Ball in 1972 on my front table, when he opened up on me. I didn't like what I saw, so I bailed. He offered me the eight and then the seven. I told him I was done! Cuban Joe snuck him in on me.

I can not beleive how many people here honestly condone this knocking shi*.I can understand if your good freind is getting into a bad game and you stop him,but why help total strangers out.If they want to play, let them.In my opinion there is nothing worse than knocker. In my pool local pool room there are actually idiots that come right up to me in front of the guy they are going to play and ask me if they can win.I usually just say,"it's a gambling game."If these guys were smart why don't you just ask around and see how many people will go in with you.If you ask 10 guys to go in and all of them say no,then it might be a bad game.Action knocking is bad period.Let the suckers and their money be parted as soon as possible. It figures you'd be a knocker russ.

I detest con men and don't care if they happen to be running a con game with a cue stick or a bogus gold mining scheme. I might sit and watch or I might bust them just for craps and giggles. I had con men by the dozen come by my business. If I was busy I ran them off before they made it in the door. Pity the poor hustler that caught me when I was just sitting down to lunch or take a break though. I would let them talk and seem to be taking the bait until I was ready to go back to work. Then it was time to drop the hammer, "Fun time is over, I have to go back to work now. Go peddle your BS somewhere else!"

Today's would be pool hustlers don't even put any effort into it. They come to a strange town and use a false name and think that should be all there is to the secret identity thing. Wake up! The con has never been that easy. Most of the people that are busted are busted because they are too stupid or too lazy to play the game properly. Nothing worse than a dumb con man thinking you are dumb enough to buy into their BS.

I could care less if folks get into a mismatched game. If they have any pool room smarts at all they will get out of it before they are burned badly. Depending on who is getting skinned, I may or may not care even if they are getting skinned because they are being conned. However, I don't owe the con man a thing and he is there just for cheap amusement if I am in the mood.

Mase,
I see your point, those damn Samaritans are ruining the world; there is nothing worse. Helping out total strangers is for chumps and losers. Do unto others before they do unto you (at least I think it goes something like that). Where would the world be if we just helped everyone that needed it? Well...hmmmm....errr....ummmm....that's an interesting idea......please ignore this post.
