Why has no one beat Mosconi's high run?

This is why I think we ought to rethink these records in terms of Table Difficulty Factoring

Engert's 498 on a 9ft with tighter pockets should be the one thought of as the tougher feat IMO.

... This is why I say if there were a $10,000 prize then the record would be broken within six months. Fame alone isn't enough as just breaking the record won't for the sake of doing so won't pay the rent.
The record requires the run to be in a scheduled exhibition, not on someones home 4x8 with a smartphone recording the run.

It wasn't 498. And how about Cranfield's 768?

I broke it when I played against Elvis .
Bruce Lee is my witness.

I thought someone was offering some sort of money for the run to be captured on film as proof. Do any of you recall this? Maybe it was Mark Griffin or someone.

I believe it was Jay Helfert. He wanted all rights to the footage or something along those lines. He could clarify the stipulations I'm sure.

I believe GS has had a standing bounty for anyone breaking the record during the DCC 14.1 Challenge, which they video.

Except, as we know, what they do at the DCC is in no way equivalent to what
Willie did.

So, what TDF would we agree the Brunswick that Mosconi used was? Engert? No point in speculating about it, when we can actually do the math.

Thank You Kindly.

Hey Dale, what do you mean by this ?

I could be wrong of course but I thought the high run challenge was being held on a larger tighter table?

Or were you referring to " buying" chances etc...

ILack of motivation. There is no major financial upside to doing this feat. Mosconi's run wouldn't even be a record if someone hadn't drawn up an affidavit. It was an incidental event as Mosconi would typically run 125 and stop in exhibition but this time was urged on by the room owner and the crowd. Since the room owner was a friend Mosconi continued and the rest is history.

So today setting up a situation where there would be sufficient witnesses and a record of the run is actually difficult to do without sufficient motivation to do so.

Yet, folks break records of various things for no reason at all but to have the record. Most eggs eaten, most balls balanced on head, whatever. The Guinness book of World Records is filled with them.

Yet, not one pool player on the planet wants to break the most historic record of billiards because it won't pay much ? Well, they will get instant fame, they can sell a few posters, might nab a sponsor, etc. Heck, when giving lessons, they will be known as "Mr. 527".

They will now own one of the unbreakable records in billiards... who would NOT want that. They don't want it cause they can't do it, plain and simple. Cause afterwards, they will make MORE than $10K if they play their cards right.

Agreed.

Agreed. There is not one straight pool player on Earth that wouldn't give his left nut to be the man who broke "the record." They would if they could... but they can't.

What would have happened if Brunswick continued sponsoring a world champion to do straight-pool exhibitions ?

Just one thing - Mosconi didn't have any "motivation" other than to see how many balls he could run. He didn't get paid extra for running 526 instead of his usual 125.

If you had offered Mosconi $10,000 dollars to run more than 526 he most likely would have got your $10,000 dollars he would most likely have got your money and Mosconi on video said his high run was 609, not 526.

Absolutely, if they could they would. Whether it's talent or desire lacking it hasn't been broken. A lot of racks LOL..Just to have the stamina.

Put up some money.

Someone will break it next week.

The money has been on offer for several years now.
Results: no new record.

And, the potential record breakers don't even have to break it in competition to win the money.
Still, no new record.

Good luck breaking it on Diamond tables.
