I have to say as a governing body of women's pool I am kind of surprised to see this in a press release.

"Of course, the WPBA organization is not so foolish to think that the top women play at a level comparable to the top men, but the WPBA takes pride in the fact that its top players have dared to mix it up with the top men, and while doing so, have enjoyed some scattered successes. In point of fact, like the majority of men players, the ladies of the WPBA are awed by the skill of the top men, feel honored when afforded the opportunity to compete against them, and understand that doing so allows them to grow as players. "

Ok so the WPBA doesnt think its players play as well as the men?

Interesting to me lets hear what you think.

Some of the men do not want the women in their tournaments. They feel the women undercut them in the ESPN deal. This statement is simply the women playing nice.

Ghost,

The statement is only verification of the truth. The absolute top women players are not equal to the absolute top men. Set after set. Once in a while Jasmin, Karen or Yu Ram Cha are going to win a set against Efren or Shane. Until they prove they can WIN a world class open event, they will be "second class citizens" of the pool world. JMHO.

Im just surprised they would outright say it. I mean I would expect to see something like "our players will strive to do their best against the men in the US Open this year !!"

Something like that but not something that so blatantly says hey we're not as good.

Just surprising.

somebody spreading "it" with a trowel!

Reads like somebody spreading "it" with a trowel. For whatever reason the women are a tiny step down from the men at the most elite level. They aren't as far down as some folks imagine and some of the women don't hesitate to mix it up in some pretty tough play. As far as I know she doesn't gamble but I'd like to see Jasmin mix it up with a man that isn't in the top dozen or so in a long grind. I don't know how it would come out but it would be fun to see.

They are just stating the obvious. Women as a group have lower average skill level than men as group.

Individually there are women whose skill level is on par with that of most world class players. This is why those women are at the top of their group.

Being allowed to participate on equal terms should allow the women as a group to grow their skills.

Why would you think that they would claim to be as good as the men?

If I were Allison or Karen or Kelly or Jasmin then I wouldn't walk around thinking I was inferior to anyone. I might think that Johnny is better than me but only by virtue of experience under fire not by virtue of superior talent. However I wouldn't state that as a group women were as good as men.

The WPBA has made a factual statement that is grateful for the opportunity to compete in an OPEN format on equal terms.

Nothing major about it IMO.

That is surprising for them to release, is that a real press release? Is it online?

I don't understand why this would surprise you. They are being realistic. I do think that on a good day some of the top women players could win matches from some of the top men, but it would be at least a slight upset. The gals are definately improving though and at some point in the future they could catch up. I've seen a marked improvement in the level of the Women pros over the years. Everyone used to say that Jeannie Balukas was the best woman player, and at the peak of her career she was. But the bar has risen and I'm afraid that Jeannies top game would not be good enough these days. I guess you can call that progress. It's a shame we don't have a league system in the US that prepares players to play professionally. The biggest of the leagues we have is more interested in filling their own pockets than helping the sport to progress. This is why we are falling behind the Europeans.

This is actually a pretty bold statement. Some people, I for one, would argue that women don't have a lower average skill level but that their player pool is much smaller and therefore it is more unlikely that one of them would rise to the absolute top (among men and women, that is). Can't think of any particular difference between sexes that would make a huge difference in the game as it is played today. (With soft breaks and all.)

And most inherent differences between sexes are statistical in nature. That is, men are more likely to have good spatial understanding, but not all men are better than women in this respect. Sure, there might be some inherent difference that makes it more likely for men to become the absolute best, but I'm not aware of such.

If the player pool (of serious, competitive players) were the same, maybe we could draw some conclusions.

You have to admit, it does seem a bit unusual for an organization such as the WPBA to allow an editorial comment like that to filter out. Wouldn't it serve their purpose better if they made the comment that our girls are right up there with the guys, or something to that effect?

I have to say I just think its very blunt and in all honesty it should have read something like "the women of the WPBA are geared up and ready for a tough fight with the men as they enter the uncharted waters of Barry Behrman's US Open nine ball championships. The women are both honored and excited to be included in such an auspicious event that has a history of success.

The above is a very condescending press release and I have to wonder who wrote it. I just don't see where making such remarks serves any purpose other than to perpetuate the theory that women can't or shouldn't be playing against the men. If I was one of the top women players, I wouldn't be too happy to read this tripe.

This makes a lot more sense IMO. "Let's go get those guys and show 'em we have game too!" Not, "Oh poor little me, I'm lucky I can play against those big bad boys. I hope they don't beat me too bad."

Women want equality, give it to them. Make all mens tournaments topless! :D

Dude thats not funny Karen Corr could kill someone. She did that at one tournament in upstate NY and kids were lost bro. Not funny !!

LOL LOL LOL

What's the betting line in Vegas for the women making it into the top 8? After this statement, it must be astronomical.

I don't see anything discriminatory. It's discrimination if there's hatred or unfair treatment, which in this case doesn't exist. Stereotyping maybe, but discrimination no. Stereotyping is meant to generalize, not single out case by case. It's nothing more than somebody calling a spade a spade. I personally find it refreshing to see people speak their minds without fear of criticism.
