Wow, getting a 192 players with double elm tournament finished in two days. Hats go off to Mark G., Sunny G., and all the staff for a well-done tournament.
One question. How much did using the Magic Rack help move the matches along? I heard there were no arguments over racking at all. Johnnyt

They did a great job getting this tournament done in 2 days. I was skeptical simply becuase of the sheer number of rounds/matches that needed to be played...but it ran super smoothly!

I can say this, with out the magic rack, this tournament would of never been so smoothly running and time consumming.

What type of tournament was this and how many magic racks were needed?

Just curious how well it would go if it was used in an 8-ball tournament.

I would like to hear more about the Magic Rack and how it may have helped the logistics of this event. How cool is that?! :)

It was a very well managed tournament. It was outstanding that the rules were written on a sheet and handed out. This should be done at every tournament.

Loser racked with the Magic Rack - great idea! And no soft break allowed - great idea. No jump cues allowed either - which made lock up safety play easier.

The days were long. Doors opened at 9 am, matches played until wee hours Saturday night, then doors opened at 10:30 Sunday and matches started right away.

The Magic Rack helped but was not the reason the tourney moved along. Mark was great at calling matches and keeping tables in play. I think they had 24 tables going the first day.

One word of note - test the ball sets for a tight rack before placing them out there. Some sets were too worn out and the Magic Rack became the Magic Incurable Slug Rack.

There were plenty of break and runs.

The Swanee has been done in two days with 192 players for a least the last 3 years but it did seem to go smoother this year at Hard Times than the last two at Hollywood Billiards. Part of that was the Magic Rack for sure but there were a couple of other factors that helped out too. The tournament was filled before the event so the CSI folks were able to do the draw beforehand and could call matches immediately. I believe 28 tables were in play, about the same as at Hollywood. The big difference is that at Hollywood all 20 tables downstairs were about 4" pockets but at Hard Time only the 10 tables in the Tournament Room were 4", the remaining 18 tables were closer to normal Gold Crown size. So there were 10 more tables with regular size pockets than the tiny 4" holes of the past 2 years. This was a big help since not even close to everyone is a contender and the dead money struggle on the tight tables. Lastly, the races were shortened a bit this year from 8 and 7 on the west side to 7/6. Hard to quantify how much this helped but it could only have sped things up at least a little. They played down to 48 on the first day and I believe all the final Saturday matches were in play by 11P or so.

The break format was pretty good. Magic Rack, loser racks, 2 ball in the back. With loser racking and the set 2 ball position it minimized favorable pattern racking; and with the use of the Magic Rack loser racks becomes viable since the breaker isn't going to get slugged.

Hats off to the staff for a great and well run event.

Magic Rack

The Magic Ball Rack works fine for 8-ball.

It is a little more often that the balls end up on the magic rack, but still not that often.

It takes a little longer - but once you get used to it, it is easy.

We will be offering them at the US Bar Table event in Reno next week for all three games (8, 9, 10-Ball).

I think it helps a lot - and it keeps the game moving. We use new balls and don't have the issues that are caused by old balls.

I think one year in Sandiego we played with 218 players. Mark, Jay and the crew always do a great job.
