Wpc 2010

Yeah, good luck with that, since he has basically been barred from the game since he won the 8-ball worlds. He is going to be a wasted talent due to the idiocy of many people who somehow managed to get the power to screw up this sport.

Agreed!!!!

Its sad to see the lack of marketing leading up to this tournament. Look at the way Matchroom does it. They have understood that constant teasers, reminders, interviews, small news in the months before a big tournament is the way to go.

For the World Cup of Pool in September in Manila, they have naturally already started, the latest was the story here on AZ about the US team going to Manila.

Organizers of tournament underestimate again and again the power of using internet and media to promote their tournament and create interest for it. Kudos to Matchroom for the way they do it, most other promoters have a long way to go

I agree that it is scandalous that the WPA farm out the flagship event of our game without any criteria for publicity.
While it is true that the Middle East is the only place currently giving the WPA any money these days both the 8 Ball and the 9 Ball World Championships have become effectively 'in house' events.

I tried to buy the rights to the Qatar tournament but received no response from the promoters. It is only slated to appear on Al Jazeera the local TV station and they seem satisfied with that.

I also find it disappointing that the winner of the title will receive the equivalent of around 20 Thousand English Pounds ($36,0000). The Qatar Federation are a well intentioned bunch of people
but they got this tournament for about one third of it's true market value.

Matchroom Sports rejected bids far higher than this because they needed a heavier budget
to do things in their manner – that is properly! But they declined cut price offers and handed the rights back to the WPA.

[If you are looking for a winner then you should be aware that Daryl Peach is not yet ready to give up his title]

And the guy that would probably be the #1 player in the world atm despite utter bullshit on the international pool scene stage, Wu. The rocket scientists in charge of this sport thought that it was a smart thing to remove the closest thing to pools version of Tiger Woods from competition. Such complete morons, completely oblivious of opportunities for this sport to progress and gain fan and sponser support.
Can you pls tell more details of what exactly happened to Wu - why is he baned from international tournaments?
I tried to google it and found something related to the fact that he wanted to compete for Singapore instead of his native Taiwan, but couldn't find more details about this international ban thing...
Thx!

Last I heard Wu had returned to Taiwan and may be competing again soon.

That's exactly what I had heard also Jay.

Also, I wish that Fong Pang Chao had been in this year's field, even though his game may have slipped an inch or so. What a player! Love his demeanor!

As for my picks, Jung-Lin Chang, Pin-Yi Ko, Po-Cheng Kuo or Ronnie Alcano. It would be so cool for Ching Shun Yang to finally capture his first "major" championship, but he has had nothing but trouble in the late stages of every WC he's competed in.

And here's hoping Chia-Ching Wu gets to compete again real soon.

it's not much but at least it's something.

Edit: just had a look at tomorrow's 1st round matches & Thorsten Hohmann has drawn DUN DUN DUN... Charlie Williams

Thanks for the link.

Other first round matches that should be interesting are:

Ralf Souquet VS Dennis Orcollo
Kuo Po Chen VS Thomas Engert
Marcus Chamat VS Oscar Dominguez
Antonio Lining VS Corey Deuel

Seems those match ups that I posted earlier made for some pretty interesting results:

Thorsten Hohmann (7) - (9) Charlie Williams
Kuo Po Chen (5) - (9) Thomas Engert
Marcus Chamat (9) - (8) Oscar Dominguez
Ralf Souquet (6) - (9) Dennis Orcollo

And a few upsets:

Marlon Manalo (8) - (9) Joven Alba
Daryl Peach (8) - (9) Israel Rota

Not sure why Gomez isn't there. He has been prominent on the International scene lately. I'd love to see Dennis get in these fields. He would do some damage!

Hi Jay,
It's been a while...
Unfortunately for Gomez, he wasn't given a wildcard by WPA nor the organizers. I wrote them at the beginning of their announcements. Gomez was the runner up in the last World 9 Ball Championships, and I think it would have been proper that he was given a wildcard. I was told that there is no slot available for the runner up ( only for the defending champion) and that if he wants to join, he must qualify...so to cut a long story short, we decided against qualification..then, a couple of weeks ago, Gomez said he is willing to go to qualifying rounds, so we submitted his name. but by then, it was too late, the field was filled up already...

Is this single elimination? If it is, we have lost some great players already like Souquet, Imran Majid, Marlon Manalo, Thorsten Hohmann, Kuo Po Chen, Mark Gray, Darren Appleton, Daryl Peach and Jeff de Luna.

Wow, that's just wrong!

I'm so sorry to read this... When Matchroom did the WPC the top 8 (16?) got automatically invitation for next year...

More shame on the WPA.

Crossing my fingers for Roberto in the local event instead!!!

Hope all is well Verna. Please say hi to Perry :)

This stage is double ko system. Then, from the last 64 it is single elimination.
Efren Reyes lost his first match 5-9 vs Liu Haitao from China.

Peach and Appleton lost another match in Loser bracket. does it means they are out?
I am rooting for Ko Pin Yi and Chang Rong Lin

Oscar Dominguez = OUT
Imran Majid = OUT
Daryl Peach = OUT
Darren Appleton = OUT

And Efren is losing 3-1 right now, facing possible elimination.

I think that does it. Im pretty sure to get to the next stage you have to win 2 in a row in your group before you lose 2 in a row. I think this was a change made a few years ago to avoid guys dumping when they have already qualified.

The website says it's straight up double elimination in the group stages. Standard WPC format.

Oscar Dominguez = OUT
Imran Majid = OUT
Daryl Peach = OUT
Darren Appleton = OUT

And Efren is losing 3-1 right now, facing possible elimination.
